    This was the only main Halo game I did not play on launch. I bought it a year after release and it became one of my most played games on the Xbox One. It gave me some of my favorite multiplayer and custom games experiences for any game, Halo games included. And sadly it does not get the credit it deserves because of the broken story that came with it.

      The campaign is utterly awful, it's amazing how it's treated as throwaway trash thanks to its horrible direction and writing. It's so unlike the Bungie campaigns which people find endlessly replayable. But that multiplayer does look like a lot of fun, a part of me would love to see the full game added to MCC on PC at some point but I'm doubtful it will happen.

      The campaign was a huge reason I didn't get the game. I also think you're forgetting that the game straight up didn't launch with forge or theatre, so for someone who h5 was the sole reason for getting an Xbox One, it was an actual deal breaker. MCC being a broken mess at the time absolutely didn't help matters either.

    the campaign was awful but the mp was one of the best mp's out there and still is, 4v4 competitive vise that is, high skill gap and skill ceiling, in depth movement, every gun is useful and balanced, the magnum was one of the best magnums, you could outgun smgs and ars in close quarters with it if you could aim and strafe well, sprint was perfectly balanced, individual and team skill matter a lot, you couldn't just rely on your team, you had to be able to pull your own weight, over all h5's mp was the best mp, at least for me. the only argument you could make against it is that it was too competitive, which is true, that game was ruthless if you weren't on your A game, slight missteps would usually screw you and your entire team over, so it's understandable that the casual scene didn't like it as much, but the comp scene loved it to death

    343 Forgot what Spartans are in relation to everything going on in the world, they weren't a bunch of Doom Guy's like this game tries to push, they were the best humanity had, they were barely enough to scrape by, they were what humanity needed to have a slight chance against the initial invasion of the Covenant and even then they needed to steal Covenant technology to adapt the overshield against plasma burn because Covenant weapons burned through Mjolnir.
    Now compare the kind of vibe 5's intro and cutscenes try to push and Deliver Hope from Reach in which they scrape by a losing battle, losing a squad member and having one left disabled.
    It's a similar deal to Warhammer. Ultra Marines aren't badasses because they annihilate everything, they're captivating badasses because they are treated as a last hope, best chance that only just manage to stand against an unstoppable force. Spartans have always had that same vibe to me and both were killed in droves to barely pull back temporary victories that gave humanity time to find a way to win or survive.

    • @Vladiator

      FUCK YEAH, this guy gets it. 343 went WAY too hard with the “we want to make MP and Co-Op canon, your Spartan is canon.” It was a good idea but horribly implemented and it boiled the Spartan concept down to “ODSTs but better”.

      I am a firm fan of Halo's narrative first (I still love the book Fall Of Reach & hate what a lazy job that movie did adapting it) and your point is very accurate and something Halo 5 missed completely; sending the SPARTANS II's into the field did not mean the UNSC started winning the war against the Covenant, their efforts just meant the UNSC was losing slower. Meanwhile the goal of the SPARTAN III program was to 'trade lives for time', they existed to perform suicide missions to slow the Covenant down while the UNSC looked for a way to save itself.
      Spartans are exceptionally well trained, determined, had the best equipment available and were pushed first to the peak of human fitness and then beyond it, but they still had limits. Noble 6 was essentially the Spartan III version of Master Chief (right down to being the only other holder of Hyper-Lethal classification); highly skilled, dutiful, unyielding & a great soldier, but when Noble 6 was left facing a literal army of Covenant forces; Noble 6 DIED. They took a lot of Covenant with them, but they still died because they were a great soldier, not a superhero or a warrior god like Halo 5's opening treats Spartans as.

    • @heraldofoblivion499
      @heraldofoblivion499 2 года назад +5

      Have you seen Halo Legends or Forward Unto Dawn? Spartans have always been more like Ironman Captain America babies than actual professional soldiers.

    • @Bradley22449
      @Bradley22449 2 года назад +9

      They were also creations of 343 and follow their vision of spartans not the orignal vision Bungie created.
      And you're not entirely wrong spartans are capable of incredible feats of strength and agility but they were exclusively raised and trained to be professional soldiers, that's literally all they know.
      The main issue that lies in 343's vision of spartans for Halo 5 is that something like the intro makes no sense and undermines things like Deliver Hope, the spartan defence at castle base and Noble's losses; especially 6's final stand.
      To add perspective keep this in mind, the overwhelming majority of spartans were lost defending harvest, some outer colonies and Reach just to give humanity time and delay the covenants discovery of Earth, they died just so humanity could even survive to height of the war not even to win it.
      I like the intro, it's cool and has one of my favourite pieces of music but at the end of the day it takes away from what Spartans are in relation to the universe , takes me out of the story and makes me fully aware of the plot armour present.

    Halo 5’s multiplayer was fucking based, it had the most in depth forge in the series as well as introducing the custom games browser which added so much variety to multiplayer when before you’d need to get a bunch of people you know together to play customs which wasn’t always feasible. You could play dozens of different things that were all unique in one sitting.
    It’s honestly why I’m not too upset about the delay of forge in infinite, because improving Halo 5’s forge is totally gonna be worth the wait

    Even as someone who loved the early Halo books, I hate how Guardians just expected everyone to know who the hell Blue Team were. If I'm playing a game, I expect important plot details and characters to actually be explained, either in prior games or in the current one. It's just lazy, and feels like a blatant cash grab. And as someone who hadn't followed the books past Ghosts of Onyx, you better believe I had no idea who the hell Osiris Team or what the Elite civil war were.

      Not to mention the fact that they killed The Didact in a damn comic book. One problem that 343 has storytelling wise that has persisted into infinite is that it feels like you could fit a whole other game between their games. I always thought that Halo 5 felt great. The gunplay, movement, TTK, were all great.
    I think one thing people forget though: it’s extremely inaccessible. I remember being at a friends house and downloading this. She didn’t play FPS games, and H5 was a bit too much for her, with all of the “advanced movement”. We played ODST instead, because she was able to grasp that instantly.
    I think that’s one reason that Halo 5 is not as big as previous titles. It’s not a game someone can just pick up and play.
    Also the focus on competitive really hindered it. Esports ruins some games, or at least can take away from what we love about those games.
    Also also, I love the TimeSplitters music in the background!

      Similar thing to Halo 2, the use of button combos and other tricks makes it incredibly hard for people to jump into. So it's usually full of people who played it back in its prime and are REALLY good at it or people who played tons of later games and had an easier time adjusting to it. That's okay for MCC though because there's a flavour of Halo multiplayer for everyone, still impressed they kept 4's multiplayer considering how hard that dropped in population for very good reasons but some people like it I guess.

    A post Covenant Civil war Spinoff could technically still feature a spartan. The Banished did occasionally recruit humans (usually criminals). So if they wanted, they could make a Banished vs Storm spinoff, which I would love to see honestly. That would even be a good excuse to feature a lot of the UNSC arsenal since the Banished use UNSC weapons a lot.
    Maybe they could have the player be someone trapped in an ONI flood research facility for knowing too much and the Banished come in and break the inmates out offering them spartan augmentations if they join the banished or something like that.

      Personally I think i good plot in simple terms would be for example: ok yeah civil war blah blah, Lord Hood knowing the Arbiter sends a Spartan 3 to go help the elites go do pew pew bang bang yay win, Now i think it could be intersting IF possibly this Spartan 3 was a survivor of Reach, this would give a Hate but still Ally relationship between the Elites and Spartan, and for such spartan to Learn and adjust to these new elite allies and maybe not hate them as much for destroying his friends and all of that. So, Lord Hood sends Spartan 3 (survived reach and hates any covie species) to go be allies with the same species that destroyed his "home" and fellow spartan buddies. This spartan over time of the campaign learns to start to be friends with the elites and possibly could grow a connection with the arbiter and learn the "truth" (see what i did there) behind the covenant and such and forgive them.

    Half way through Halo 5's Campaign development, after they finished making Locks campaign missions that involved no master chief, they forgot master chief and had to SCRAP together chief's levels and re-write the story. In short, the development had forgotten chief and had a entirely new story to halo 5, but had to read books, comics, listen to podcasts, a movie or two and a tv short that didn't come around. Which also leads into the advertisements never making sense.

    • @EpicGameChanger
      @EpicGameChanger 2 года назад +13

      @@Sunsetofcanterlot that's not what happened at all. What really happened was a year before 5 was released the story was forced by MS to be rewriting entirely because at the time MS was pushing Cortana as a personal AI and wanted her back in the games to help advertise there windows 10 AI. There is loads of leaked screenshots and images you can find online about it, originally yhe didact was going to return disfigured and crippled and the scanning system Locke uses was going to be used more in the story as a sort of detective devices to help find clues as to where chief was also originally Thorne from H4 spartan ops would have been a member of fireteam Orsiris instead of Buck but that was scrapped too. Halo 5's story is basically just a quickly together rewirte and rework of what that originally wanted to do which is a shame because the story had alot of potential before the rewrites. So yeah they didn't forget about Chief, he was always a big part of 5's story it was just cut down because of the rewrites to the story.

    Controversial thought here, I actually didn't hate Halo 5. I thought the visuals were spectacular for the time, I didn't love the art style in all cases, but it did not bother me as much. I personally enjoyed the way the AI worked. The Cortana bits were indeed quite good and interesting, and the multiplayer had some salvageable modes and options. All in all I think Halo 5 guardians is a very average game, not something terrible that deserves to be shunned or shamed. I will be honest about my experience with Halo 5 though, I only play the multiplayer for about 30 to 40 hours (about 2 weeks of free time), and I did play the campaign twice once by myself and once co-op. I didn't stick around much, and I didn't jump into it until mid 2017. I have no idea how things were before I played it or at release, and I have no idea what happened after mid 2017 with the game. After completing Infinite and played through most of the MCC including Reach/ODST), I decided to buy H5 for cheap on the Xbox store and give it a spin for the first time. Half way through the campaign now. Visuals are absolutely stunning for a game released in 2015. Gorgeous locations and interesting set pieces, particularly the mining colony of Meridian, the forerunner world of Genesis, and Sanghelios itself. Balanced and interesting set of enemies which force you to adopt different tactics dependant on whether or not you are in battle against the Covenant Remnant or the Prometheans. Character and weapon design is good, although the Elites are a bit chunky. The plot is what lets the game down imo. Warden Eternal is a shit antagonist with no depth of character (compare to Atriox/Esharum for example in Infinite) and Master Chief's paltry two missions so far feel like cameos.

    The reason why Warzone was so astronomically bad was because the Req packs DIDN'T just have cosmetics, they had actual weapons/vehicles. If you didn't pay a cent and just unlocked them naturally, you could get a powerful weapon or vehicle once or twice a game. But you could tell when an opponent or teammate had spent hundreds of dollars on Req packs because they always had a Scorpion or Mantis or a Rocket Launcher as soon as they could spawn them in. It was very pay2win and made me put down the game for a while until some of my friends got into all the custom map stuff, which was very fun and sucked me back in. But you still have to play Warzone to get most of the cosmetics, which is why you shouldn't blame people for thinking it ruined the game. Or least the progression that is.

    • @Jarekthegamingdragon
      @Jarekthegamingdragon  2 года назад +1

      That's literally not true. You get req packs for playing any multiplayer mode. I had an absolute ton of req packs for doing nothing but playing slayer, swat, infection, action sack, etc. I had a ton of cosmetics and weapon variants yet I never played warzone and never spent a cent. Warzone is bad not because of req variants, it's bad because it's a massive chaotic mess. It also literally doesn't affect the actual halo MP game modes so not playing Halo 5 because of warzone alone is really silly.

    Lost track of the times I've beaten Halo CE, 2, 3, Reach and ODST. I've beaten Halo 4 maybe 3 or 4 times. Guardians I've beaten once when it first came out..... terrible campaign. Online was okay but my friend was obsessed with it. 0/2 for 343 Halo games imo. I've heard good things about infinite but I'm hesitant about getting it due to how bad 4 and Guardians were.

    Just finished the campaign. Problem with H5 is that it doesnt feel like part of the mainline Halo series. It very much feels set in the Halo universe, but since the main series is essentially the story of the Master Chief, I actually feel the campaign would have been better received if it were released as a spin-off (I.e Halo: Guardians instead of Halo 5:Guardians) with Jameson Locke as the playable protagonist and John 117 making a few cameos. Just that subtle tweak of expectations I feel would make alot of difference.

    gameplay had great concepts but they needed fleshing out, 343 could definitely make a great halo game but it always falls apart. Story had tons of potential in 4 and 5 but yet again things fall apart when it comes to making things make sense or feel like were progressing properly (even infinite suffers the same problem). Halo 5s only redeeming factor was the concepts they had and forge and most of the gameplay. 343 halo games hurt me a lot, not because its bad but because the ideas were really good but we never got something polished enough to make me come back.

    The thing I hate the most about Halo 5 is (aside from the poor execution of cool story ideas and overall feel of the gameplay) is the damn Spartan helmet lines on the screen with no option to turn it off, made me feel motion sick (which is something that I never really deal with in games) and just claustrophobic. I hate that so much, with all my heart.
    Like sure some people might feel more immersed I guess? But I know I speak for the majority when I say it’s awful and I should be able to turn it off if I want too (or just not have it there in the first place). Why would I want less visibility, it just feels like I’m trapped in a helmet? Even just watching the gameplay with it on makes me feel motion sick.
    Edit: Also it’s never a good sign when you finish a game you’ve been looking forward too and when the credits roll you audibly say “that’s it?” and start laughing. Man Halo 5 could’ve been so cool, but it just wasn’t, but hey at least they’ve completely redeemed themselves with Infinite in my eyes.

    I was expecting Halo 5 to be in the covenant civil war, with the UNSC going on the offensive, fighting to liberate covenant controlled planets and to control forerunner facilities, both against the covenant remnants and banish alike, sometimes with the banish as tactical allies, since they didn't really have any affiliation.
    Also, everything look like it was leading up to the return of the human civil war against UNSC, which what the promo video looks like, either John or Locke went AOL, fighting the UNSC, which would be interesting.
    Maybe the human flood war, now with the banish and ex- allies, which was also interesting, maybe all of those, but what we got? Cortana ressurection as the baddy... Dude...

    I'm a diehard Halo fan but I barely played Halo 5 because I don't own an Xbox One myself and all of what I saw from it came from playing it at a friend's house and watching people play it. I agree that the MP was really good from what I saw and I played. The campaign, on the other hand, was hot garbage. It was hard to follow, it took Halo 4's emotional goodbye with Cortana and spat on it, and it just wasn't enjoyable overall. I'm someone that plays the campaign first and that's what hooks me into the game. After beating it at my friend's house, I told my friend that I just wanted to play something else for the first time ever. He did manage to convince me to try out the multiplayer with him and that was a much better experience.

    I get that the campaign is a very integral part of the Halo games but its such a shame that H5 was a little overlooked for that reason. Despite that shortcoming, the arena multiplayer for H5 is fantastic. The forge was hands down the best in the entire series and because of the forge, the custom games players made for others to play were amazing. Most people will play the campaigns for these games once…maybe twice, but the one thing that always keeps all the Halos going way beyond their releases is the multiplayer, and H5 kept it going for almost 7 years. The game definitely deserved more love.

    Halo 5 is a game I have strong feelings about, when it comes to story its a disaster in gameplay and narrative. But in multiplayer with the right mindset it's great.
    I've been giving it more of a shot casually after Infinite due to the lack of content for the game and been having a great time. It's not my favorite Halo game for multiplayer but it's still very good. If the artstyle and customization was much better it'd be probably my favorite or right next to my favorite halo entry.
    Warzone was defiantly the weakest aspect of multiplayer in my opinion and I think if less people focused on it and focused on the core modes and eventual casual modes people would be more kind to it. Warzone to me doesn't feel like Halo, it feels really tedious to play and games can really drag. I think most of my bad impressions and same for most others came from the mode as when I first played Halo 5, I played mostly warzone as it was the new big mode and it really soured the game for me. With how much hate warzone and especially req packs got, if both didn't exist I think more would've appreciated the multiplayer gameplay more.
    I'm still currently a console gamer but in the future I really hope for a PC port. The game I feel is a tad bit held back on console when it comes to FOV and aiming due to how the aiming works. If I could play Halo 5 with 90-110 fov with a mouse and keyboard I'd adore it as it fits the pace of Halo 5 so much more.
    Also I'm a bit upset despite never being a real player of Halo 5 343 stopped updating the game. I'm glad they fixed and update the MCC now but they don't even support their flagship title. I understand no more major updates but not even just small content drops is a really major bummer.

    The soundtrack is a victim of Halo 5's story lack of focus.
    The composer is great, Locke's theme tells me more about him than the game itself. Point is, developers simply couldn't give proper informations, everything was still vague and he had to work around this confusing emptiness, I suppose.

    I think a game about the covenant Civil War would be incredible. They really should've taken the mission to help the arbiter and made that the entire game. The whole game is Chief helping the arbiter win the Civil War. They could've taken it a step further by having Atriox as like a fellow rebellion leader with the arbiter, but they don't see eye to eye and the game ends with Atriox splitting from the arbiter to start the banished, leading until HW2 and then infinite.
    If they really wanted to keep the cortana thing going, they could've made the legendary ending of 5 a scene of her recollection herself at the domain (however that would look), and then finding information about zeta halo. Infinite's campaign would've needed changes, but I personally think it could've led to some improvements in the story.

  • @timur5241
    @timur5241 2 года назад

    To be honest
    -NPC squadmates & Warzone were pretty much cool and interesting as concepts (but I can agree that the NPCs could've been smarter)
    -I see no problem with spartan abilities (besides, it makes sense in-universe for spartan IVs to have thrusters in their armor)
    -prometheans could be reworked to be more fun and balanced to fight (soldiers and weakpoints for knights were a good start + missed opportunity for Halo Infinite)
    -Forge was amazing
    -the only issue with customization IMO is not being able to equip armor pieces separately from each other (was sad that my halo 4 armor set is pretty much impossible to recreate in halo 5 because of it) but everything else is fine (ugly helmets can be arranged), idk what's with the colors so feel free to discuss it
    -REQ variants and attachments were also a pretty interesting concept (my only complaint is that you can't equip for example a threat marker with a muzzle silencer and an extended mag)
    -Warden could've had a weakpoint (I think there is already one on his back, but I'm not sure if it's actually a weakpoint tho)
    -Why can't we ping weapons and enemies in multiplayer? (like how we can in campaign)
    -This game had enough stuff needed for machinimas (this tbh is where I'd like Halo Infinite's removal of red vs blue to be, but only as an option and not forced)
    That's all I can say for now, but might add more later (but I do agree that Chief could've had more missions)

      @@Serocco I think 4 has a stronger narrative, but it's kind of like the first RE film. You forgive it because it's earnest (343's first game). But Infinite is a far better game in terms of depth and mechanics/gameplay differentiation. It's a better game overall because of it.

      @@edgelordleon5859 4 has a very strong emotional core with Chief and Cortana's last true game together. The writer based it off his relationship with his mother when she was dying of dementia. To this day I see Halo 5 as almost non canon cuz of that.

    This was the first multiplayer halo game I really played alot, even though I've played every single game halo multiplayer and campaign, I still enjoy halo 5 mp even though it doesnt play like a halo game. Fuck the campaign tho.

      they'll probably have a MA5-series model again at some point.

      A throwback to halo reach. There's no other reason to reuse such an old variant of the AR after the multiple new variants released during and after covenant war since the events of reach. Between the events of reach and infinite there were atleast 5 new versions of the AR released.

      @@Gameprojordan The lore reason is they had to equip the Infinity's marine detachment with old stuff during Cortana's subjugation, hence the older MA40 and the VK78 Commando is also supposed to be obsolete.

      I always thought it was because the Reach model is skinnier/slimmer, which fits the overall viewmodel positioning of non-power weapons in Infinite, which is tucked down and to the side (as opposed to being up in your face like 5)
