High Notes Of Tobias Sammet (Edguy, Avantasia)

  • 1. First clip is a wonderful B4 from the song Inside from the first Avantasia album (2001). It is done in a very soft manner compared to Sammet's usual high notes.
    2. Now we have a C5 from the Edguy song Painting On The Wall from the album Mandrake (2001). This is where he still used his operatic technique and didn't blend much chest into his higher notes, hence the light and clean sound.
    3. Time for a change! C5 from the song Journey To Arcadia from the newest Avantasia album Angel Of Babylon (2010), this one is totally different, it is possibly done in 100% chest voice, sounds very rough and raspy. This is the style Tobias is focusing on now.
    4. Now his best C5, fantastic ending of the Avantasia song The Story Ain't Over from the Lost In Space Part I EP (2007). Very resonant and powerful mixed voice note.
    5. This one is very well blended C#5 from the song King Of Fools (Album - Hellfire Club (2004)). This is the time he started changing his vocal style and the whole Hellfire Club album represents the peak of his vocal abilities as it mixed both his clean and rough approach. He never nailed this note live to my knowledge.
    6. Similar sounding note, just a semitone higher, D5. The song is The Spirit Will remain (Again Hellfire Club) and it is Tobi's absolute best vocal performance. It's worth checking out.
    7. Time to get a little rougher. Totally raw and more screamy. The pitch is D5 (with harmony F5) and the song is The Wicked Symphony, the tittle track of another new Avantasia album (2010).
    8. Almost the same note, just without harmony notes, the song is Sex Fire Religion from the Edguy album Tinnitus Sanctus (2008). This song is Tobi at his rawest.
    9. Time shift back to 2001 and Avantasia song Farewell. One of my favourite notes of his, a briliant Eb5! I prefer Tobi's present style, but I miss notes like this one. The whole song is a vocal win, with Michael Kiske singing at the end.
    10. Super sustained Eb5 from the Edguy epic The Piper Never Dies (Hellfire Club), simillar in tone to the note before it. Clean head voice note, great vibrato.
    11. Another clip from Hellfire Club, this time the song is Mysteria and we hear a scale up to Eb5 (with a harmony G5).
    12. Time to move to Sammet favourite high note, E5, first there this stellar E5 from the Edguy song Spooks In The Attic which unfortunately didn't appear on any album, just on Superheroes Ep (2005).
    13. Next we have one of his most acclaimed songs, Reach Out For The Light from the first Avantasia album. We get to hear this amazing serie of 3 E5's in one breath.
    14. Ladies and gentleman, Tobias Sammet's best note ever, you can bet it wlll amaze you. Incredibly powerful head voice E5 from the ending of Edguy song Golden Dawn from the album Mandrake (2001). No comment is needed.
    15. Time to get higher than E5, where males usually have to thin their voices. This is just one short Eb5 with a trill to F5 from the song Forever which is on the album Hellfire Club (2004).
    16. Now watch out for the harmony vocals, where Tobi sustains a D5 and then hits a short but solid F#5 on the magnificent The Spirit Will Remain!
    17. This is how power metal singing should be done, high phrase from the song We Don't Need A Hero (album is Hellfire Club) which tops at F#5. This doesn't seem to be much to hard for Tobi.
    18. Next clip is a bit scary G5 from the song Flight Of Torek which is a part of the metal opera Aina(2003). Unfortunately, this is the only song on which Tobi appears.
    19. This one sounds much better, it's a note from the live performance of the Edguy song Babylon from Los Angeles (year is 2007). It's a sustained G5 with G#5 trills and it's most definitely head voice, bacause he lands on a head voice F5 and there is no switch.
    20. Another live clip, now from a 2009 performance of the anthem Tears Of Mandrake. He first hits one strong Eb5 and then goes up to G#5!
    21. This one goes even higher, a scale from a live performance of Shaaman song Pride on which Tobi is a guest singer. The scale goes up to sustained A5!
    22. Now this is something unusual for Tobi! Very Halfordish high phrase which tops at A5. The song is The Final Sacrifice from the second Avantasia album (2002).
    23. And finaly, the highest Tobias Sammet note, a strong Bb5 which drops down to a sustained F#5! I'm not sure if it falsetto or head voice. It is also from the phenomenal 2004 album Hellfire Club! The songs is called Rise Of The Morning Glory.
    24. Now time for some singing passages. This is the bridge of the Edguy song Speedhoven from the album Tinnitus Sanctus (2008). He hits some super chesty C#5's and this is the most powerful his chest voice has ever been.
    25. And for the end, this is what I believe to be his finest moment. Ending of the song What Kind Of Love from the Avantasia album The Scarecrow. Highest notes are sustained D5's.

    I don't understand why people are discussing so much about his high notes. I have listened to Tobias for years and im a super huge fan. He sing high notes because he sounds amazingly great up there, not because it's a competition like some stupid metal fans think. Just look at The Spirit Will Remain, the song is almost high notes all the way... something too many artists are not capeable of singing.. and it's a beautiful song because he have full controll while he sings

    Great video!! Well done dude! I also love the final note in "Babylon", when he does a E5 and a harmony G#5. Anyway, Edguy forever! \m/

    damn i wish i could sing like this guy, the highest note ive ever sang without falsetto is a C#5 and ive only done it once and never been able to do it again! although in my falsetto i can go up to an A6, which makes people think im a bit demented ;) Oh, and my lowest is a D2.

    @Playinmeguitar His voice has moved down a bit, it's natural, but it doesn't mean it's gotten any worse. His tone is much richer now than it used to be 10 years ago. The technique he uses now requires darker voice and a little strain. Didn't you hear that live Babylon clip? He can still sing those high operatic notes, he just chooses darker, rougher notes instead. Of course, 2004 was his absolute peak, but is better now in 2010 than he was in 2000.

    Been waiting for a "high notes of tobias sammet video". Too bad Toby cant sing like he used to. Have you heard the song "No more foolin' " by Edguy? He hits a sick note in the beginning. And the note before the solo from the song "Fallen angels" is also quite cool. I advise you to check em out if you havent already. Thanks for uploading, great vid

    One of his highest notes is probably the upper harmony note in the chorus of Rise Of The Morning Glory. Really high and hard to hear, since it's only a very short harmony note.

  • @WDoAM
    @WDoAM  14 лет назад

    @Playinmeguitar What makes you think he can't sing like he used to? I think he only improved with age. I know the Fallen Angels note, it's very very high. Gonna have to re-check No More Fooling but his voice still wasn't fully develop during Vain Glory Opera era.

    @jowox Yeah, he is similar to Dickinson in 4th octave singing, but I think Tobi's high register is superior to Dickinson's. Yeah, esp that G#5 is powerful, I forgot about it.
    Thanks for the nice comments, though... :)

    @dannebb There is a difference between 1998 and 1999 but not even in 1999 he was that fantastic. From 2001(Metal Opera, Mandrake) he finally perfected his voice and his head voice was at it's best during 2001-2004 period.
    He has changed his voice now and the higher notes aren't as easy for him as before, but they don't sound like crap. Check The Piper Never DIes from London 2010 to see this. :)

    And where is the scream on The Fallen Angels? You missed the important one... The A5 was hit there and he had it harmonized with C6.

    I'm new to Tobias. I love the music. You can not compare a much younger man to Bruce Dickerson vocal range. Tobias is Tobias and Bruce is a man in his fifities and still kickin 4o years later!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Let’s not forget that while Bruce was only playing with Iron Maiden, Sammet had Edguy and Avantasia, had to tour with his two bands in a short period of time having no rest for his voice, and always singing in really high notes. It’s a rough routine for anyone’s voice, and yet he was amazing. Don’t think everybody would do it as well as he did ☺️

    @jowox It's from LA 2007 show, pm me if you'd like a link to donwload the whole bootleg. His voice is pretty good there, and it will be hard to find a better Babylon scream because this one is pretty perfect...

    @SpectralUltra If you mean his super high range, than I agree. However for me the mid to high range singing (up to D5/E5) he is absolutely sublime. Around 2004 he was very powerful even up to G5...

  • @WDoAM
    @WDoAM  14 лет назад

    And did you hear Blizzard On A Broken Mirror from the new Avantasia album? Listen to the verse after the guitar solo, you'll hear some great rough singing by Tobi, and there's no way he could've done that in 1998.

    Minchia, mi immagino Sammet rosso come un peperone mentre alza ulteriormente l'acuto di Tears of a Mandrake O.o che ugola, ragazzi!

    @Playinmeguitar I definitely agree he sounded the best in 2004, there's no denying that! Hellfire Club was amazing vocally and The Spirit Will Remain will remain his finest moment. I'm just saying that he is better now than he was before Mandrake and Hellfire Club. I mean, he has some qualities now he didn't have before. When you are singing rough like he is now, it requires different technique the one used so sings clean high notes.

    u must listen it

  • @WDoAM
    @WDoAM  14 лет назад

    @rockchicklora15 His vibrato was never bad, it was a bit shaky in the early years, but he mastered it around 2000-2001 and it was fantastic on Mandrake and Metal Operas, but started reducing the use od vibrato from 2004 and Hellfire Club... At least this is my opinion! :D
    Sascha helped him to learn to not overuse his vibrato.

  • @Playinmeguitar
    @Playinmeguitar 14 лет назад

    @WDoAM Well, to me it sounds worse than it did a few years ago. His high notes sounds strained and un-clear. And yeah, he can belt out that scream in the end of Babylon, but what I mean is, I don't think he can sing like he did before. Staying on the key he used to. "Under the moon live 04" here on RUclips for example. I'd like to see him do that again. But if you like his voice better now that before, i respect that completely. I still like his voice as well, just liked it more before :)

    @WDoAM Well, Edguy have tuned down their music. I dont think he can sing in the same key as he did 6 years ago. His voice now sounds strained and pretty annoying. And his high notes that he does live are not what they used to be. If you listen to "Mysteria" live from 2006 (Tuned a half step down) and then listen to mysteria from 2004 (Original Key) you will hear a big difference.

  • @InhumatusAraneum

    What does it means?? Anyone can sing like that, you can stretch the vocal range if you have the right help, the throat is very very very picky but if you real advice and professional guidance and care determination besides u can reach the notes as song 05:07; hear that high note, you can just have it, just try and see!! ;)

    To be totally honest, I think he has lost lot of his voice on the past 5-6 years, don't know the reason though. Maybe he needs a little rest of touring and recover some of it.
