      Hey again, Tink! Was just over there taking in your Temus...Yes, though I confess this was recorded the other day...It's NOT like this here now, ha! The birdies really like this area it seems. Thanks! I believe you may enjoy all of these. Thanks as ever. -Carm & furz currently elsewhere

    Hi Carm, and happy Spring for real! I'm just skipping around on Group87 and that is a hidden gem. So many familiar elements yet novel -- scratches the itch for that 80s synth rock vibe.

      Happy real Spring your way too Dulles, really. 🙂That's a good Group 87 description, "familiar yet novel". Still sounds fresh and vibrant after 40 years, and can't believe it's been that long....Thanks for joining me in the yard, and hope all is well out your way. -Carm & furz

    That's all I had to hear was tecurally and harmonically and I was instantly turned onto the Group 87 album. Good to see you again cousin Carm. You must have posted this right after I left for work this morning. I am in working in the heart of Boston this week. Taking a few people to Boston Medical, Tufts and Mass General. The traffic in Boston is outstandingly bad. I have a few new albums to check out. The three on a Thursday series is always welcome Carm. Thanks for sharing them~

      Hey cuz Rob, I believe you'll enjoy the Group 87...also their first record if you haven't heard that one too. I feel for you having to deal with "outstandingly bad traffic." We do have our share too of course in Chicagoland. Thanks, it had actually been a few years since doing this series. Been meaning to for a while. Thanks as always, and safe journeys on the road. Peace n love. -Carm

    A miracle that I actually saw the notification for this video of yours!!!
    None other than Miles Davis said that Ahmad is one of his favorite (if not his very favorite) pianists. High praise indeed. I hadn't heard of this 1973 album, so I just had to hear it based on your description. This is Ahmad certainly in his much more commercial direction (he's recorded tons of all-acoustic albums which are fantastic from what i've heard), but ya know, I still love this 1973 album. I found-and listened to-the album in full here on RUclips. The very first track is the famous 'The World Is A Ghetto' a nice 9:36 version. About 4 years after this George Benson recorded his own version of 'Ghetto' which ran for 9:44. I gotta think George heard Ahmad's version for sure...
    The Group 87 sounds very dated to me for sure-mid 1980's Synth-Pop, but I still very much like the two albums they made for sure. Though 'Vapor Drawings' has aged much better and that still sounds fresh to me and not dated at all. Peter Maunu gets my vote for one of the most under recorded talents out there. Love that guy.
    The video quality is excellent-is this your phone or the old camera? The green bloom on the old tree (in one of the coolest outdoor corner 'hangouts' ever) really looks great....

    • @gorvo31
      @gorvo31  6 месяцев назад

      Heya G, Glad you found this. I may have forgotten to mention it the next time I were to write you. 🙂
      Oh yes, I'd heard that about Miles....not a bad person to leave a good impression on. Glad you liked this album too. It does make me curious to hear more versions of the tunes he's covering here.
      I'd agree Vapor Drawings is generally more timeless than Group 87, they seem to transcend their dated-ness though indeed (those digital drums though, ha). I've been playing that one still a lot lately. Great one for the car. Yes, Peter's 'Warm Sound in a Gray Field' is a favorite one-off here...unless he's made other albums we've missed...
      Actually, I've been doing videos on the Chromebook for the last few. Maybe the natural light helps? I dunno...May just stick with it for the forseeable future.
      We've had lots of rain lately and it's all really blooming nicely. Spring's definitely here. Thanks as always, pal. Catch up further soon. -Carm & Rocky who just celebrated his 10th birthday

    Good morning/afternoon there Carm! Good to hear from you, just catching up a bit. Big fan of that first album as you know ;) My favorites from that one are “Postcard From The Volcano”, “Mask Maker” and “Pleasure In Progress”; the first two I first heard on 94Q Jazz Flavours back then of all places. The latter one sounds like an instrumental by China Crisis or Depeche Mode. Definitely a great spin, have on vinyl + CD. Big fan of Ahmad Jamal as well, have several of his records including the one shown here. I was just playing Rossiter Road from him the other day, so nice “serendipity” there ;) Good to see ya as always- KJ

      Hey there KJC! Still owe you an email...plus catching up with your posts, glad to see you're back on more. Oh yes of course on that first one. Yes, those are great pieces, and indeed evocative of other artists yet so distinctive to the group...especially Mark's stuff in general of course. Will be on the 'listen-out' for Rossiter Road. Cool serendipity indeed!
      Thanks much for hanging as always and catch up further soon. -Carm & furz

    Carm, I loved your discussion of ''Liminal'', you strike me as a ''Twilight personality'' ( not the television series). My first time hearing Mark Isham was on the Van Morrison album, ''Common One'' from 1979. My schoolteacher invited me and a few others to her house for a ''dinner party''. When the conversation got dull, her boyfriend led me into the living room, we discussed Art ( he was an artist) and Music. He played ''Common One'' for me, it had just been released. Two tracks stood out, '' Haunts Of Ancient Peace'' and '' When Heart Is Open'', they both have a Windham Hill vibe carried by Isham's playing. Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock and Jack Dejohnette ''bonded'' due to their mutual love of Ahmad Jamal's album '' A Portfolio of Ahmad Jamal'' from 1958 on Argo. Oh yeah, Jack Dejohnette wrote a tune, ''Ahmad The Terrible'' dedicated to Jamal. I saw Ahmad Jamal play live as trio, augmented by a steel- drummer ! Wow, I listened to the Wayne Phoenix , I enjoyed the whole album, thanks for turning Us on to it.

      Hey Michael, Thanks so much. "Twilight personality" sounds pretty cool, so I take that as a very high compliment. ☺Great story of hearing Mark Isham early on! Must hear those now. Nice serendipity too, as just a couple days ago I was listening to 'Bye Bye Blackbird', the tribute album to Miles by Keith, Gary, and Jack...definitely a touchstone album here. Neat seeing Ahmad live. Am really happy you enjoyed the Wayne album! He's still new to me, so will be keeping a listen-out for the next one. Thanks as always. -Carm

    Hey Carm Like Kyle, I am an avid listener of the Group 87 album. Back in 83 a guy that was a colleague when I was in the electronics industry introduced me to a lot of great music, prog jazz, Manhiem Steamroller, Iso Tomita, etc. including this one. He loaned it to me for a while, then I had to go out and get a copy for myself. Nice group of musicians. Postcard from the Volcano has to be my favorite from the album. The last one by Wayne Phoenix sounds interesting, will have to check it out. Enjoyed the insightful commentary as always. Thanks for sharing, I hope all is well! Take care. 😺

      Hey Wiley, Very cool colleague you had then! Great stuff to get turned onto at around the same time. No surprise you and Kyle would appreciate Group 87 so much. ☺Another fellow commenting here referred to them as "familiar yet novel", which captures them well. Come to think of it, the Wayne Phoenix is like that too, though in quite a different manner. Thanks as always, hope all's well down yonder too. -Carm

    I was about to say, it seems like it has been a long time for your Three on a series! I'm not a huge fan of piano jazz, and like most jazz elitists, tend to shy away from orchestras in jazz - having said that, one exception is I love Ahmad, and I bet I would love having strings accompany him as well.

    • @gorvo31
      @gorvo31  5 месяцев назад

      Hey Kris, Oh yes..I checked and it had been three years! I dunno....
      Ah, well for a long time I didn't care for orchestras, strings in jazz either, mainly since I tended to like sparser settings. In recent years I've come to appreciate them more. Yes, if you like Ahmad, this kind of setting could win you over as well. 🙂 Thanks much for tuning in. -Carm
