Sofya Melikyan plays Déodat de Séverac's 'Sur l'étang, le soir' from her brand new album, 'Présence lointaine'.
The second movement of Séverac's 'En Languedoc' suite, 'Sur l'étang, le soir' depicts the tranquility of a pond at evening in the composer's native region. It embodies a driving belief of Séverac's short-lived career and the subject of his thesis at the Schola Cantorum ('La centralisation et les petites chapelles en musiques') - local inspiration being key to preserving the French style. Premiered by Viñes in 1905, the suite forms part of the musical backdrop to his rising position within the Parisian compositional milieu.
