Sounds like a failure in leadership on Stephanie's part and, to an extent, Vince's too. things make sense Shane and Bruce laughed and worked together Steph tries to control everything got to be her way. hints why smackdown is a better show
Bruce would have made a fantastic heel manager in WCW especially as after Halloween Havoc 1992 Paul Heyman was on his way out of there. Bruce played the same character a heel manager/commentator in Global Wrestling Federation in Dallas in 1991/1992 and WCW I feel did miss out not bringing in Bruce at that time. He would have brought so much behind the scenes also and probably would have been Eric Bischoff's right hand man once Eric got power considering how friendly they are. But even if WCW did make a real play for Bruce he probably would have went with his heart and went back to Vince and the WWF.
After listening to this, I have a great appreciation for Bruce. Despite being screwed, he is still very gracious and professional in talking about WWE. Well done to Conrad for getting the best out of Bruce.
I don't think it's fair to say he got screwed. I think he has made it clear he had attitude issues and clashes, which is what led to it. I think it could've been handled better on both sides, but I think he contributed fairly to his dismissal.
Can't blame him. That's what adults do. And in hindsight it resulted in the Network deal and Bruce going back. Think about the hundreds of thousands of dollars more he has made because he was smart about this.
Also I totally believe Steph created or took that narrative and ran with it to get rid of Bruce. I’m sure he understands why this all happened but he’s way past this! We love you Bruce! If you havent figured out prichard is a compulsive liar yet, there is no helping you. He totally dodged his drug issue and the gun thing that everyone around him said happened
It sounds like Stephanie made things difficult for Bruce. If everything he is saying is true, It sounds like Bruce was in a no win situation by not being able to approve things, but @ the same time he would be in trouble if things wern't approved by a certain time. Bruce was around for 20+-years so Stephanie should have gave him more freedom to approve things when Stephanie wasn't Around or reachable. It sounds like they both could have put more of an effort in their working relationship. It's too bad that it got as bad as it did & it had to end like it did.
Stephanie was young at the time, and insecure. I'm sure present day, that she is secure in her job. If Bruce was working today for WWE (which he is, ironically), probably Stephanie would make Bruce her second in command. That is the mark of a good leader, to realize that good people, who may not always agree with you, need to be officially rewarded....
I think they both have fault. But I can kinda see her perspective. If you let his actions slide then the team is going to continue going to him and never embrace you in your position of authority. I think it was just a shitty situation to put them all in really.
@@Matt-cr4vvIt's not about letting his actions "slide" as if he was some trouble maker. If people call Bruce an ass kisser, I'm not sure according to that idea, he would do things that would be detrimental to his relationship with the office. Secondly the issue with Steph was that when she came back from her pregnancies, the boys were going to Prichard more than her if they needed approval of something because they knew him before Steph, and also they were just more comfortable talking with Bruce and it seemed to play on her mind. Giving Bruce leeway because of his long tenure means allowing him to approve things on the show itself without having to go to Steph all the time, which again HE WAS DOING BEFORE SHE EVER GOT THE ROLE. And never forget, Vince still has to have overall approval, even when steph would approve so there was no reason for her to be almost kinda jealous of the commradery the boys showed with Bruce.
Conrad thanks for being thorough...sometimes Bruce skips details(I'm sure there are alot so he can be excused for forgetting) and you always do a thorough job in getting the details for the listener.
@33:15, I've been in that position many of times and I learned (fortunately, easily and quickly) to let the other person just take that hit. Stepping away when others are going to you about decisions that need to be made, is extremely frustrating, especially when everyone sees you as the decision maker. But, you know what? The people in charge put those others in charge for a reason and...call it throwing the other person under the bus all you want, but when things start to go bad, it will be you that will take the hit and you'll be removed by the person you're trying to protect.
I get that from a perspective as I'm 28 and the PG era just isn't my taste. But I see why they do it this way when considering the financial results. I think back to people like Bischoff pointing out that back in the day wrestling had huge ratings but because of the product content they couldn't monetize it. So I get it from a public company sense to do it the way they do, and it's hard to argue with their logic when considering they just reported their most profitable year ever.
Hard to say. She started working for WWF full time right after graduating college. And people like Bruce have said that she is a lot like Vince. I don't think not working there would disappoint Vince. When Shane left the company for awhile he said that Vince was really proud of him venturing out for that endeavor so who knows. In the end I can't imagine she regrets the decision. I'm not trying to say she isn't talented, but I feel it is fairly safe to say she wouldn't be in an executive role with a high six figure income and multi million net worth at the fairly young age of 45 now if she had simply gone to the free market. I know Bruce always points out how hard Vince is on his kids, and as the child of a type A father I can certainly see how that is. That said I think she obviously has talent but she definitely flew up the corporate ladder much faster than a person would who wasn't family.
it sounds like she used the time tested method of finding any reason to fire bruce b/c he disagreed with her. Vince dosent care abt anyone except his family so he agreed w/ her and said ur fired
After listening to these podcasts, Bruce has actually won me over....I think he was a positive creative force in the WWF/WWE....In my opinion, the true creative genius, however, behind wrestling's greatness in the 80's was Dick Ebersol. He was to Vince McMahon and wrestling what Joseph Campbell was to George Lucas and the original Star Wars.
What happened to him tends to happen to lots of people who stay in the same job too long. He wasn't a good fit to go higher in the company and he wasn't able to adapt to the changes in the area where he was able to work (creative). The guns and the party lifestyle didn't help. Its also wrong to put all the heat on Stephanie McMahon. If Vince McMahon wanted Prichard around, he would have kept him around by putting him in another role. But he didn't.
I've heard from several people that all of the McMahon's are very hard to work for. That they're bullies and demeaning, all but Shane that is. People say Shane is down to earth and easy to talk to and work for. I've always thought HHH just went after Steph cuz of her last name. There are also creditable rumors that they have really fights quite a lot. I think everyone can agree Steph's work at creative has been awful and the ratings have gone down ALOT.
She was head of creative from 2002-13. In 2002 the average raw rating for the year was 4.01 and in 2013 it was 3.0. So not necessarily the decline many attribute. But I also think people should recognize the de facto head of creative doesn't really matter. The final say has always and will always be Vince.
Respect for Bruce. Like he said "to the haters F you. Don't care." He and Conrad have a great show that is now being marketed by WWE. How can you not respect this guy? He's done so much in and for the wrestling business.
Conrad: I have not heard anyone have as much fun as you and Brian. It's wonderful when something tickles the hell out of you. Makes the marks feel like we lived through the Blitz and the sun has just come out.

Oh heavens, the geniuses of the RUclips comment section are sure there’s still much more to the story. They may as well all change their names to Mark.
I think it's a sign of maturity and adulthood to not burn your bridges. You have a lot more opportunities in life when you don't act like a child. And in the end it resulted in a WWE Network deal and Bruce returning. That's just smart business.
Thanks for the insight Brother Love. This is someone who has a true respect for the business. No reason to dwell on hating someone and constantly trashing them. Love the show and am saving up for a Tshirt. Much respect.
it's the wrestling business (You can call it Sports entertainment if that makes you feel better) so that's what you should expect. Music and movie business is the same kind of shit. Everybody tryna position themselves and climb the ladder. If that means, someone else is out, so be it. Dog eat dog wold.
I mean, they're all snakes. Bruce politicked just as much as Russo, Cornette and others. (Not on Bischoff's level though. Eric was the ultimate backstabber.) Just look at how Bruce landed the EVP role at TNA. He was sitting at home after WWE fired him, Russo gave him a call to come in as a part-time producer. I'm sure Russo thought he could take advantage of Bruce's knowledge whilst making Bruce think he "owed one" to Russo. Instead, Bruce immediately worked his magic on Dixie and got hired to a newly created role where Russo reported to him. They've all backstabbed each other at one point or another.
One thing I've noticed about Prichard, is even though he's been doing this for 30 or 40 years nobody ever says Bruce came up with this great storyline or he really helped out my career or anything. You look at his peers like Cornette, Heyman, Russo, etc. and all have their supporters, but I've never heard of a Prichard supporter. Even Cornette never sings his praises for anything he's done and he's friends with him. He's just known as a brown noser who has a good memory and does a lot of good voices.
Gene Anthony pretty simple: all you mentioned were closer to the talent and more on air characters...Bruce said many many times that as a writer you re always in trouble with the talent and never really liked... Bruce had to go a long and hard way to his own „next“ mindset...still has to speak it out loud very often...
I think this episode was originally from 2017. So it was still like two years before he was back in the fold and I genuinely don't think he ever thought it'd be possible again considering he'd been gone for almost a decade at that point.
39:25 says alot about the situation. Bruce and Vince were friends in the leanest of times. They spoke to each other how friends talk to each other. Stephanie taking this as an insult is a fucking joke and says alot about how the company changed over the years.
I feel like a lot of people get upset when Bruce doesn’t confirm rumor and Innuendo. I’d imagine if Bruce pulled a gun on writers at a publicly traded company hed have probably been arrested and the company sued. I will say I believe he’s going out of his way to not bury Stephanie but for the most part I felt this was honest. The truth is rarely as entertaining as the sensationalism.
No one here can truly comment or say what Bruce should or shouldn't have done....None of us have never came close to working for a rich world wide company and dealing with a boss like Vince!!!!...From 1987 until now 2021..34 fucking years Bruce has with the WWF/WWE...Lots of peaks and valleys ..but yet he is still there...goood for Bruce man...I got a ton of respect for him and like him lots for just who he has after getting to know his personality and who he is thru these podcasts......I picture smoking weed getting high as hell with Bruce and outtta know wherr does a Vince or Cornette impersonation...LOL...my guts would be hurting from laughing to hard hehehe....lovr thid podcast....Thanks guy and Conrad work ethic
My question is ... why does Conrad take the show with Bruce more serious... and always dumping on what WCW was doing instead of just discussing the topic
Everything is a work, Bruce. Vince had eyes and agents everywhere. He is the spider at the center of the web of rumor and innuendo you guys joke about. He knew about your job offer. He first tried to make it a cult of personality thing by not making a concrete offer. Testing your cupidity . . . er, loyalty. He then made sure they would not call you back, by stirring a rumor pot. "Oh, Bruce? He'll spin you that he's got an other offer so he can sweeten the pot. We can't trust anything he says until he's bought." The truth about manipulators and con men. You're a con man, Bruce, and you fell for a con. Yes--he's that good and very adept at judging a man's breaking point . . . but even he is fallible. Con men are always subject to buying into a con. It is their nature.
I don't know. If Vince knew about his wcw offer let alone sabotaged it. Its been said by numerous people over the years that Vince is completely oblivious about any wrestling outside the wwe. As far as wcw not returning his calls does not surprise me at all. Wcw management was a trainwreck.
I work in a Corporate environment... so common... when there is a change of leadership the new bosses always kick out the old and bring in their own people.. it’s politics.. it’s not fair but such is life. Stephanie is a spoilt princess and she is being played by Hunter for a fool. HHH is either gay or bi... if he is willing to hook up with Chyna, god rest her soul, you know HHH is more into Nicole Bass, god bless her soul, rather than Stephanie. If somehow Shane O’Mac can wrestle control of the WWE from Hunter you know that guys like Dreamer, Taker and Bruce will have prominent positions in WWE in a heartbeat.
I worked for WWE creative from 2004-2008 and let me tell you, I left once I saw that Shane was not gonna win out. Plus I was burned out but mostly due to Shane losing the battle,
Bruce is the fucking man! A smart dude. Him and Vince are really smart! Women in high power positions are not good. I like Steph but women in management do not match!
Conrad is a damn good interviewer! First saw him on Dark side of the ring and been a fan ever since. Extra cool street cred to have being the nature boys son in law…
One thing in this podcast stood out to me. They just casually mentioned "some NFL background" when talking about the fact they had a Hall of Fame quarterback (I'd probably put him in the top 10 all time) running security. How ridiculous does your life have to be if that's just some casual aside?
I like stephanie as an on air talent but a creative advisor....if any indication of the current product and any indication of the product since she had that role is of any merit id say the proof is in the pudding that maybe that job shouldve went to someone like bruce or patterson or just vince. I mean you got to have someone young for the future thats been around the wrestling business but damn i dont know maybe hhh . I dont know her personally but wrestlings lost alot of the art it used to have the past ten years
cptnmrgnkid im talking about things like blind tags in tag matches, keeping them in the opponents corner , isolating a body part in single matches, selling has lost alot of its importance but thats due to the evolution of the style the wrestlers are wrestling but im talking about the small stuff that make up technique and rules and just little stuff like the psychology in the matches themself . My gripe with creative which is stephanies part is just how no one is really allowed to get over unless chosen ...im 31 ,back when angle vs benoit or jericho and guerrero and all of those great wrestlers were making their mark they had the freedom that if thet by chance got over with their wrestlingvor their character they were rewarded atleast with a chance. I still like wrestling there are, some standouts i highly enjoy watching but the way the ball bounces is my biggest problem with it not the entire game but it seems like the ball is being passed for them instead of just anyone able to really take it
No one likes how the McMahon "dynasty" has been playing out with Stephanie involved. But I cannot knock the process because Vince McMahon was in the same position when he took over from his father. The difference though is that Vince was highly ambitious and had unheard of plans to take wrestling mainstream. With a golden goose like Hulk Hogan, he was successful in doing that. These ambitions though have led to multiple things. One of which is what used to be much guarded secrets amongst the pro-wrestling brotherhood, is now practically common knowledge. Then you got Stephanie trying to take over for Vince, but she lacks the vision and ambition of her father, but in fairness to her, where else can wrestling go? Bruce and Conrad can say what they want about Triple H being great, but let's be real here...do you honestly think Paul Levesque would have a VP position if he was having his nights in Chyna? The fact he was in a group of wrestlers who manipulated Vince and later his competition to make themselves into stars and keep better wrestlers down...and NOW he has a VP role! It concerns me for wrestling.
@1:07:06 Pretty sure that'd be a felony Conman c'mon now. You don't just "pull a gun" at work especially if Stephanie wants to get rid of you. A quick call to the cops, Bruce gets arrested, and prosecuted. Done deal for her AND he'd never be allowed back.
First off according to several ppl HHH was the one in HBK ear not to loose to Bret during that sensitive period toward end of Bret's run in WWE..to say that HHH would be in same position if he weren't married to Stephanie he would still be COO of WWE is ridiculous...truth is were all on a journey and i think Bruce P. has landed in great place...this was great show.. chemistry with you guys is great!..By way Stephanie is wonderful caring person that went behind Chyna's back and ran around with HHH until she got him...Nice
The next show will be
Why did the WWE Rehire Bruce.
Bruce will improve the current product
Well, you know..;)
I'd want to listen to that premiere
Because Vince is desperate
Because Steph is clearly a failure and doesn’t understand that building a huge brand doesn’t make up for not getting talent over

He doesn’t get involved in any of the petty squabbles . He is honest about himself and doesn’t BS about anyone . So when he talks I listen and appreciate that it’s gonna be as accurate to the truth as it possibly can .
"I'm not going back anytime soon." ..... Famous last words.
I feel like there’s more that Prichard isn’t saying about the gun and drugs/alcohol
Because there is. Most of this is lies
@@andrewisjesus Based on what exactly? The reports from the same two or three "journalists" that spent 15 years telling us Bruce only kept his job for so long because he kissed Vince's ass, only for those same "journalists" to turn round and tell us he was fired because Stephanie didn't like him arguing with Daddy in production meetings. These "journalists" really are the greatest workers in wrestling history based on how much of their contradictory bullshit wrestling fans will swallow.
Vic Crown you replied to a 2 year old comment just for that. Wow
@@ultraviolentlight2867 Well I'm replying to your 7 month comment, isn't that why RUclips archives comments in the first place? Lol. I also think there's a lot more to the story and you can hear it in Bruce's voice. Not that it even matters now, the guys been back since 2018, still interesting stuff.
The interviewer asked REALLY great questions.
JR7827 Conrad is awesome!
The Lob Mob Conrad sucks ass
Hes both. He actually is a good interviewer asks good questions. Warm and friendly can joke around. Yet hes not afraid to call people out on their bullshit. It took me a while to realize this because of how much of a disgusting diarea shart of a human being he is.
He does seem to always try to protect himself though, he will start a topic about a certain individual, ask his interviewee for all the juicy details on them to bury them but then he'll clarify how much he personally likes that person in question so he doesn't burn his bridges with them.
things make sense Shane and Bruce laughed and worked together Steph tries to control everything got to be her way. hints why smackdown is a better show
Female ego in a managerial role at the workplace......man I rather work for Michael Jordan General Patton and Vince Lombardi than to be under that.
Steph was the writer mainly on smackdown when she first took over
Thank goodness Bruce fought that hurricane with a gun.
I think it could've been handled better on both sides, but I think he contributed fairly to his dismissal.
if you think this guy is going to spill his guts or be truthful, your out of your mind.
He wanna go back can't knock him .that's y corny way more fun to listen to..he doesn't give a fuck lmao
Can't blame him. That's what adults do. And in hindsight it resulted in the Network deal and Bruce going back. Think about the hundreds of thousands of dollars more he has made because he was smart about this.
Imagine Bruce heenan jr lol.

@@marknorth8904 She needs to go
I think they both have fault.
The biggest problem with WWE creative today is being to PC. Years ago talent was allowed to be themselves.
Whenever I try to make a point about something, I'll say what Conrad Thompson says around 19:52-19:54.
I don’t think he “pulled a gun on them”, but he likely showed it to them. Big difference
I wonder if Stephanie truly ever wanted to work for the company or just didn’t want to disappoint Vince.
He only cares about Steph, because Shane is the weak one.

This was awesome I like how you pushed Bruce just enough to get something out of him. Good work!
He was in GWF during that first let go, he had a good run there
After listening to these podcasts, Bruce has actually won me over....I think he was a positive creative force in the WWF/WWE....In my opinion, the true creative genius, however, behind wrestling's greatness in the 80's was Dick Ebersol.
Jim Tuner my assessment as well

I've heard from several people that all of the McMahon's are very hard to work for. That they're bullies and demeaning, all but Shane that is. People say Shane is down to earth and easy to talk to and work for.
I've always thought HHH just went after Steph cuz of her last name. There are also creditable rumors that they have really fights quite a lot. I think everyone can agree Steph's work at creative has been awful and the ratings have gone down ALOT.
Rumor innuendo here 😆
She was head of creative from 2002-13. In 2002 the average raw rating for the year was 4.01 and in 2013 it was 3.0. So not necessarily the decline many attribute. But I also think people should recognize the de facto head of creative doesn't really matter. The final say has always and will always be Vince.
She's gone now in 2023
Respect for Bruce. Like he said "to the haters F you. Don't care." He and Conrad have a great show that is now being marketed by WWE. How can you not respect this guy? He's done so much in and for the wrestling business.

Bruce was surrounded by snakes man
it's the wrestling business (You can call it Sports entertainment if that makes you feel better) so that's what you should expect.
They've all backstabbed each other at one point or another.
if wwe were to bring back the brother love show it would be the highest rated segment on raw
Shit that should be happening every week.

Listening to this 3 years later & this sounds so much more like a job interview than a podcast. Lmao
Conrads voice is so perfect and soothing to my Yankee ears. 😂 . I could listen to him read the yellow pages.
Not going back there anytime soon and yet, he's back in the fold. This was a great podcast.
It shows you why the company is so PC and trash today. Obviously shes the one pushing that movement behind the scenes.
I admire Bruce. Great memories and a Great career. Lol man he sounded Just like Dusty Rhodes.
Vince McMahon sounds like a straight arrow boss and would be the coolest but scariest boss to have.
As a British listener, I find it hilarious that they're even debating "if" he got fired for bringing a fucking gun to work, God Bless America!
Anyone else notice how many times Pritchard contradicts himself the more he tells the story?

I feel like a lot of people get upset when Bruce doesn’t confirm rumor and Innuendo. I’d imagine if Bruce pulled a gun on writers at a publicly traded company hed have probably been arrested and the company sued. I will say I believe he’s going out of his way to not bury Stephanie but for the most part I felt this was honest. The truth is rarely as entertaining as the sensationalism.

Plus I was burned out but mostly due to Shane losing the battle,

cptnmrgnkid im talking about things like blind tags in tag matches, keeping them in the opponents corner , isolating a body part in single matches, selling has lost alot of its importance but thats due to the evolution of the style the wrestlers are wrestling but im talking about the small stuff that make up technique and rules and just little stuff like the psychology in the matches themself .
