  • This video was originally made to help my Ceramics II students on their Textured Slab Set with Focal Accent Project. In the video, I demonstrate how to roll and texture a slab, and use an acetate pattern I made to create a bottom with a folded side walls, and a butter dish lid with folded side walls. I used a piece of craft from from which I cut my feather focal accent, and I used an MKM wooden roller to create my repeated texture in the background. Link to rollers below
    When folding slabs, always score and slip the joints, and often add coils for security. I cleaned up the edges with a vegetable peeler, and wet fingers to smooth.
    Pattern measurements are at the end of the video - but are here too:
    Base length: 9.5" long, 5.5" wide, the notches were about 3/4" deep- (base that on how tall you want your walls)
    The top/cover was 11.5" long, 7.5" wide, with each of the corner squares cut out at 2.5"

    I am a high school ceramics teacher and potter. I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
    I started my RUclips channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!
    Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!
    Please stop by my Etsy shop www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA... to see my personal work!
    I purchased the mylar (not acetate like I said in the video) in rolls from Amazon, and made many different types of patterns for my students. See link in Googledoc
    The MudTools ribs are my favorite ribs- in this video, I use the yellow and red ones. (links also in Googledoc)

    This is the second tutorial that I'm seeing from you and they are so informative. I want to start giving art lessons for school students and I am learning a lot of important informatuon on technique and working methods to share with future students and use to make my own clay pieces. Thank you for your generousity. 😀

      You can play around with the dimensions of the bottom... I could have reduced that by 1/2" - 3/4" and I bet it would have been fine too! I'm just making some of my first ones now... so I may come back to the video with some recommendations when I finish! :-)

    Karen so glad I came across your channel! I want to try new things and this is one of them! What kind of clay would be best to use for useful pottery?

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  5 лет назад

      Awesome! So glad you found me! ;). Recommending a clay would really depend upon how high you’re able to fire it. I assume you might be working at a class or studio setting, where you could fire pieces? Often, studios will fire to a particular temperature, and that would determine your type of clay. (Some studios have you use their clay only to be sure it is correct.) Stoneware clays can fire to a higher temperature than earthenware- as do their glazes Also, if you have the opportunity to do either high or low, You may want to take a look at the glazes to determine what what be the look you’d like to achieve. If you are just beginning, earthenware is easier all around. Doesn’t fire as hot, and because it goes through less thermal shock, it has less potential problems during firing. I hope that helps!

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass

      The base of the dish would probably fit two... but the lid fits one! :)

    Thanks so much for sharing your videos. I’ll bet you’re fun to have as a teacher! You don’t seem to mind that the corner seams show on the outside of the butter dish lid. Is that just to hurry through the video or is that a part of your style? I know some potters really like to have marks that show the items are made by hand, but where’s the line between made by hand and unfinished? I often ruin items by attempting to get an “industrial “ finish.
    I appreciate your help.

      Hi Gail! Sorry, I just saw I missed this message! I usually leave visible seams on slab pieces. I like the glaze to show the construction techniques. I will smooth areas with a small brush to make sure it is clean, but I do show it off! :)

    Could you use oven baked clay or does it need to be a specific kind of clay for projects like this

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  3 года назад

      It would need to be a fired clay with food safe glaze. I would assume oven baked items would be for decorative purposes rather than foodsafe.

    I really llve your videos and if I was 40 years younger I'd try to enroll in your class! I tried aming several butter dishes ands find the bottom piece warps and the top piece tends to crack - BUMMER - Any pointers? Would paper clay patch the cracks? thanks so much for all you do!

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  2 года назад

      Hi Susan- I would say, perhaps make the slabs a little thicker if necessary, and allow to dry SLOWLY and evenly, I recommend under a heavy towel. Uneven drying of pieces can often result in warping and cracking.

    Why do you add a coil on the inside of the lid?

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  3 года назад

      @ 14:00 I add the coils to the vertical corners only, as my students are beginners and it makes their connection of the slabs more secure. I probably wouldn’t do it in my personal work.

      This clay must be fired in a kiln- to over 2000 degrees Fahrenheit.

      @KaransPotsAndGlass  Год назад

      Hi Jean- I have the pattern described in the video description. I don't have any patterns for sale! This is what is says:
      Pattern measurements are at the end of the video - but are here too:
      Base length: 9.5" long, 5.5" wide, the notches were about 3/4" deep- (base that on how tall you want your walls)
      The top/cover was 11.5" long, 7.5" wide, with each of the corner squares cut out at 2.5"
      FYI:Here is how to get to the description. If you are on a DESKTOP- you will find the video description underneath the video and title. If you are on a MOBILE DEVICE, you will see the title below the video, then look to the right for a little ‘arrow’ which becomes a drop-down menu. Open that drop down menu, and the video description will be visible. In both cases, your video cannot be playing full screen while viewing the video description.
