Met her when I was a rehearsal accompanist for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra back in the late '70s-early'80s and Ms. Peters came to town to sing in Don Giovanni. I INSTANTLY fell in love with her voice, her beauty and her charm!
Verdi wrote Violetta for a full lyric voice, but somewhat absent-mindedly wrote this piece for a lyric-coluratura, creating many headaches over the years. Peters did not do the full role in her younger years, but was ideal vocally for this piece.
Violetta: Oh! Oh! Amore! Follie! Gioir! English Translation Violetta: Free and aimless I frolic From joy to joy, Flowing along the surface of life's path as I please. As the day is born, Or as the day dies, Happily I turn to the new delights That make my spirit soar. Alfredo: Love is a heartbeat throughout the universe, mysterious, altering, the torment and delight of my heart. Violetta: Oh! Oh! Love! Madness! Euphoria!
I don't think you can compare them.she sings it very well, and for my taste it is the type of voice that is requested-but Madame Butterfly wouldn't fit her...Callas could do both-that was her greatness
I wondering how old are All of the commentators here if they say i have seen her in concert... or i saw corelli... maybe they saw tagliavini schipa and Caruso too:D
Saw her many times and am now 83, also did see Tagliavini in concert in the early 1960's and also Schipa in 1962 he was in his early 70's then, saw most all of them in my time.
She could have if she wanted to. The first and third acts are perfectly suited to even very lyrical voices. The second act is more dramatic, but nothing Roberta couldn't have handled. Many light sopranos have sung Violetta successfully, including the likes of Beverly Sills. Also, Roberta's voice, although a lyric coloratura, had a way of glimmering and bouncing around the theater. She definitely could have been heard through the orchestration of Traviata.
Her voice is two sizes too small for this role in a big house. She was a soubrette or a light lyric soprano at the best of times. This role requires at least a lyric who can push to spinto for at least part of the role. Plus her Italian is terrible.
She was a very smart singer, and said multiple times that the reason she lasted so long was that she staunchly avoided wandering from the coloratura and light lyric repertory for a good thirty years, and in fact only sang Traviata and Bobeme in her mid fifties. She might have gotten away with Violetta earlier, but she wouldn't have lasted as long. She understood her "brand" and guarded it well.
I Saw her many many times in house and she was excellent in her roles like Gilda, Oscar in Ballo, Hoffmann as the Doll etc. Magic flute-. this aria was just for TV which is just fine, of course she did not sing Traviata. Some People try to put her down foolishly , but she was wonderful in her Fach and lasted very well singing into her 60's beautifully as a Coloratura with great technique and good looks. RIP. @@sugarbist
Correct as far as the role, that is not just the aria she was suited for light roles and was wonderful at that. Singers like callas, Caballe and Moffo, etc. where excellent in the role, I saw Peters so many times and her voice though not large of course carried very well in the house, she once sang Lucia with Corelli at the Met. and recorded the opera with Peerce but that was in 1956, with Corelli in the early 1980's.
sorry the Peerce Peters Lucia was a 1958 RCA Studio recording, she sang it in the Met. house with Corelli in the early 1980's. It of course was a great role for Callas and Sills, also Gruberova later, in 1954 an older Pons sang it with Tucker on a Columbia recording complete, i saw Tucker sing it with Sutherland, also Bergonzi and later with Pavarotti and also saw both Kraus and PAV. sing it with Sutherland but though not a really great role for Peters, she managed it well and the recording with Peerce in 58' is fine, i also saw Deutekom sing it with Tucker in Chicago in 1970, Peters lasted cause she sang what was right for her and in her60's was still excellent in her lyric roles, a great Doll in Hoffmann and page Oscar in Ballo, I really liked her a lot and in 1968 saw her give a recital with her mentor Jan Peerce and they sang a lot of arias and duets and the Traviata drinking song duet from act one, very good, he was then 64 and she was 38 and excellent, yes and her voice carried there in the LA music center very well, a big house.
Слушаю и невольно улыбаюсь, вертуозно , словно соловей, наслаждение....
What an astounding voice excellent coloratura ❤❤

A bravura performance by Ms. Peters!
Stunning voice and technique!

I just noticed the little nod to the song “here my song, Violetta” in the opening interlude, I love that touch, haha
Bueno fue una soprano lirica ligero exelente., como la Mesple. Canto con Bjoerling Rigoletto y Warren. Extraordinaria.
Era soprano ligera. La densidad de su voz era más pequeña
I'm so in love with her. Stunning. Absolutely perfect.
she was!
Old TV sound was pretty terrible, but Roberta still shines through.

I do not think Violetta would have cared for such aa Alfredo!
He’s not singing operatically, he’s crooning!
Divina' su voz superior a la Cllas ¡Sublime!

I saw her at the Met many times. I saw Milanov in her prime (early fifties). I am 89 and worked in the checkroom at the Old Met. Okay?
Saw her many times and am now 83, also did see Tagliavini in concert in the early 1960's and also Schipa in 1962 he was in his early 70's then, saw most all of them in my time.
Somewhere between forty and...death.

Who is the tenor?
The camera man!
Immaculate
Oddio....
Which orchestra/conductor was this?
I believe that was the Firestone Orchestra conducted by Howard Barlow.
Correct.@@allenjones3130
great why didn't she sing this role at the metropolitan opera.
she voice not big enough~~~Violetta suited to Virginia Zeani

Herod Antepasto well I’d say her Italian was pretty good; his, on the other hand, was terrible

Who is that terrible Tenor?

R.I.P

@@shicoff1398 I remember some of her FINE appearances on TV. She once mentioned that Tucker was the greatest tenor in the world
Wow! I didn't know that, thanks in his own time I think he was, surely the number one American tenor, especially in the 1950's and 1960's.@@sugarbist
Good singing, but hopelessly Reader's Digest American.
Totally wrong voice for this role.
