    Good video but you missed one important maintenance item. The black intake has a screen filter that gets clogged with dog hair. It is reachable under the right rear passenger seat. You might even be able to clean it with a shop vac crevice tool. (No 10mm needed.)

    Thank you for the video. I followed it and I saved myself $500 dollars in dealer servicing. In the beginning I pulled the orange plug to disconnect the battery before working on the fan. I cleaned the fan using q-tips (dry first and then soaked with isopropanol) and some wet wipes. I found it easier to take the whole fan apart to get into all the nooks and cranies during cleaning.

    Hola Merv. I have a '13 Prius v and a '19 LE awd-e, which I think is the best bang-for the buck, cold-weather commuter car available.
    A nerdly point about which battery starts a Prius:
    "In all versions of the Prius, the motor called M/G1 spins the engine to start it. It is an AC motor powered by the inverter which is powered by the high voltage battery.
    However...
    If the 12 volt battery cannot start the computers and power the fuel injection and engine electrics (the spark plugs need to fire, etc) your Prius won't start."

    I learned a lot just by watching since was just charged $293 for a hv [high voltage?] hybrid fan/filter service by Toyota and was wondering why it was so expensive. At least this makes me feel somewhat better than it does take some work to access the fan. Can you tell me what the vents are for that are located under the driver and passenger seats? I can't find anything in my manuals. I also was told to replace an AIR CONDITIONING CABIN FILTER (no price given) and an AIR FILTER, R&R--whatever R&R means ($135). If you have any videos on these filters, that would be great. I discovered what I think is the air conditioning filter accessed through a panel in the lower glove box--it looked clean to me so I'm not going to do it--I don't have pets and keep my car in a garage, so not much dust either. Thank you again for any input.

    • @MervsServiceSecrets
      @MervsServiceSecrets  Год назад +2

      I think one of the things you are calling a "vent" under the seat is the passageway for the cooling fan. As for the engine air intake filter, you will see me remove the housing for it in the following video: ruclips.net/video/4ALjAsMKhCA/видео.html The housing is outlined in yellow, near the beginning of the video and you'll notice silver clips that can simply be released to open it up. (You won't have to take the whole thing out like I did in order to get to the filter)

    HI Merv, Gen2 Prius Battery Fan working. Found corrosion in Large Plastic plug connection, closer to the hatch. I tried electrical cleaner and used a needle to pick clean the corrosion. I wanted to wait and get a plug from a salvage yard then splice and connect. But I when't ahead and cut off the connector on both sides then cut and splice together with electrical tape. The wires were black, yellow, purple and brown. It looked like the brown wire was missing the metal pin inside the connector. I assume thats the hot lead. Did not work. I will try and find a good plug from a salvage yard and go it again. It may be that the wires have a short elsewhere. Any suggestions?

    Great video, Merv. I must say, you did make this look easy. My dealership wants $500 to do this! As others have commented, I’m a bit hesitant to do anything on my car myself - Toyota puts the Fear of God into you when you ask them about doing anything around the hybrid batteries yourself. I do have a question - is it necessary to take off the Orange ‘circuit breaker’ bar if you’re just doing this fan cleaning?* (*Asking for a friend who does NOT want to end up with a home permanent hairdo.) ✨😂✨

    • @MervsServiceSecrets

    Is there a filter for the V? I’ve seen a lot of videos of the regular Prius saying the filter needs to be cleaned. Where is the inlet for the fan?

    • @MervsServiceSecrets
      @MervsServiceSecrets  2 года назад

      There is a grate over the end of the inlet duct for the HV battery fan, but it's just there to keep out the big stuff. There is no filter which is why it gets dirty inside that blower. Look under the rear seat on the passenger side and you will see where the duct starts. From there, it goes back toward the HV battery and bends upward where it connects to the cooling blower. Hope this helps. Be careful.

    Dear Merv and other viewers, I have a question about cleaning the HV battery fan on a Prius Plus Wagon (2012). The Prius Plus Wagon is sold in the US under the name Prius V. But..., there is one big difference when it comes to the spot where the HV battery is located in the car. In the European Prius Plus this HV battery is placed between the front seats. On the US model Prius V Wagon the battery is placed under the back seat row. From the outside the Prius V and the Prius Plus (Europe) look the same. Both are wagons.
    However, the European model has THREE seat rows. The European model is a SEVEN seater. The location of the HV battery is therefore very different. Like I said, it's between the two front seats.
    Would anyone know where to find information on the cleaning procedure for the European model Prius Plus Wagon? I could not find anything on RUclips. The air intake for the battery fan seems to be under the richt front seat for the Prius Plus. Are there Toyota service manuals for car technicians who cover this cleaning procedure?
    Thank you all in advance for your help, M

    Okay, so you were able to touch everything that you did...using a metal socket, etc. because you pulled the orange prius battery tab which decreased the voltage (and danger) and also I assume because you are wearing rubber fingered gloves?
    I have ...a friend...trying to clean her car after a family of pernicious varmints tried to make a home (with a full comfy varmint nest) in her glove box, her cabin air filter, some nice scarves she kept in her car in case she needs to look fancy quickly (ask Helen about how a cute scarf can make you look instantly more professional...er...I guess it depends on your profession), and finally made their home for their children also.. in her trunk.
    It's been a hellish road to clean up their mess but she's been able to clean & change everything out like the air cabin filter, the filter inside the cabin that filters the intake air located next to the back seat inside the cabin closest to the trunk.....but she needs to get to that battery filter you're cleaning here in this video
    Help? I've..I mean, SHE has got girl parts and she doesn't plan on getting bamboozled by a mechanic shop (who wanted to charge her close to $100 to change her air cabin filter behind the glove box which took her about 5 minutes to remove and change youtube DIY style by herself.)
    What gloves are you wearing? Will she die?... She (and I) are mere mortals.
    They also want to charge her $119 to make sure her car is okay to drive 14 hours. Her belts are fine (that's what she said). Filters changed, oil changed recently....what in the world are they checking for for "road worthiness"? This car is fine to drive as she drives it just fine without trouble. 2015 Prius with less than 56,000 miles.
    Most importantly....How does she clean that battery filter you're cleaning there without getting electrocuted??

    • @MervsServiceSecrets
      @MervsServiceSecrets  Год назад

      Well, the purpose behind that orange disconnect is as stated. But of course as a general rule, don't do anything you aren't comfortable with. The best I can tell you comes from personal experience -- I have never died doing it, nor have I heard of anyone dying in such a way. Yet I always encourage viewers to do additional research beyond whatever information they glean from my videos. And regarding gloves to wear, that brings us to a very special video Demille recently put together which demonstrates various kinds of gloves if a person really wants to take things to extremes. In this video , you will even see special electrical gloves that are recommended when someone is taking apart all the most dangerous parts of a battery bit by bit, although I suppose some might argue they are overkill for minor procedures. But again, you need to decide what's best for you. You'll find the video here along with important references to Mr. Weber. I think you'll like it. Hope this at least helps to point you in the right direction: ruclips.net/video/g12Z_PFihYc/видео.html
