    My dad was a commando in WW2 (8th Army, 9 Commando) he saw active service in North Africa, Italy and Greece. When he retired my mum and dad moved to Exmouth in Devon. Close to CTCRM (Commando Training Centre Royal Marines) Limpstone. My dad was a very quiet, unassuming man who did not garner public adoration. But when he passed away I was very surprised to see probably around 30 serving Marines attend his funeral. They came to honour an old soldier who'd served over 50 years previously. Marines are in a league of their own.

    Marines are magnificent. My uncle stormed the beaches of Peleliu Island (Macarthur was taking back the Phillipines) losing an arm & awarded the purple heart. He was always grateful to have one arm left he said! 1st Division Marine Corp suffered 6,500 casualties but won the day. What utter guts! Think about that number & not giving in.
    When he died 60+ yrs later a full contingent arrived draping the coffin in the flag & carried him out. Marines never forget their fellow warriors. Fierce in battle but superb gentle men in peacetime. If your lucky enough to have one as a neighbour know that you are safe. Marines are the finest men God put on this earth. Balls of steel.
    Let`s hear it for the Marines.

    denn man stirbt nur einmal und leben das tut man jeden Tag.
    Macht bitte alle das Beste daraus und denkt nicht nur an euch. Gerade jetzt in dieser Zeit mit Krieg nicht weit von uns entfernt ist das besondere wichtig.

      It is sad that it did not get the recognition back then that it enjoys now. Ennio Morricone was a genius and ahead of his time. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly was not well received in the US when it first came out. Now it is a world wide cult film. Sergio Leone chose Morricone to score the films and let the music tell the story since there was little dialogue.

    • @garfieldsmith332
      @garfieldsmith332 2 года назад +18

      @@maryleone2023 Yes, it is very sad. The US could not accept a western done by others that was better than what they made. It was the movie going public that saw the genius of Morricone and Leone. In a different time films like GBU would have won Academy Awards. Morricone should have won at several Academy Awards prior to The Hateful Eight. The Mission, The Untouchables, Battle of Algiers, Once Upon A Time in the West, Bugsy. And there are several more that should have been nominated. A friend of mine has visited Europe many times and he said many cafes and restaurants have trios or piano players, or violinists who play Morricone music for people to listen to as they dine. He was a genius and we are fortunate they they still release his music today.

      Yes, it was unaccetable that "Spaghetti Western" were actualy better than most films made by the "Yanks" and hence they were regarded as B-movies and held back until the audience realized what the truth was and finaly they started shinning as deserved; Ennio Morricone just spread that magic over those films and made them all eternal for us to enjoy.

Patriotism is generally seen as a positive idea, but ignorance and blinkered vision are not. Sadly there are people who don't see this, even some within the armed forces themselves. The British armed forces are as professional as any, but they're not superhumans, nor are British people intrinsically better... they're trained people just like those in many other armed forces.

      @@bloodyspartan300 Except where they're not exceptional and don't succeed. History clearly shows that much of what any military learns, is taught as much by failure as it is by success. You can see this in every conflict. Those that make up our armed forces are generally just normal, average people, not the best and the brightest that the nation has to offer. A good many are poorly educated and choose to join up because they don't fit in elsewhere or they think it will be "exciting". Many need to be led by others, or need the regimentation and discipline offered, because they lack certain social skills. There are good and bad people in every military.
