I watched it and I loved it. Lazzaro's face and character were like an angel from those Davinci paints.
the movie has lot of layers and it's deeper than u thought, probably one of the best movies out there, had lots of influence on China's underground culture surprisingly.When u really get into the details it will teach u a lot.
Seems filmmaker was someone sensual he or she wanted to give birth to a sense of pleasure.
The lazzaro he reminds me of my mother she's very same as the protagonist we some times exploit her and think we were happy to have someone who does our chores but in truth we are always looking for happiness
While she already found happiness in her family to care for them.
You can see the boy from city always wanted to exploit others, lazzaro, even her mom he wasn't really happy and he was alone.
Lazzaro would exploit no one he was happy with what he had and he never was alone or sad. But in the end you saw that common people couldn't understand they thought lazzaro was naive but they were blind and their misjudge was what killed lazzaro.
It was amazing for me that when lazzaro found the city boy was unhappy that was exploited by others he lost his happiness and he died for bringing back happiness for city boy.

This movie is brilliant. I like the way it shows the contrast between the city/ countryside life. The own production of their food against eating a pack of crisps.
The Marquise's power on them against the bank power on everyone.
The way they don't recognize the food that are under their feet in the city.

I realize this is an old comment, but I just watched the movie and was trying to understand it. Your explanation is the best I have seen. Do you think the wolf raised him up because Pippo had returned to the estate and Lazzaro would be able to find him there, for the purpose of Lazzaro ultimately bringing them home to something that might be better for them?
The movie is kind of open to interpretation but what is clear is that it has to do with a mixture of injustices that happen and have happened in all kinds of societies and with a bit of utopian ideas (the director said about the main character: "Lazzaro is what we all could be but we are not"). The movie is also sprinkled with some mysticism displayed in a magical-realism style (as Lazzaro is slightly portrayed as a non religion related saint). For example: There are some parts of the plot and some symbolism that is based on stories about Francis of Assisi. I'm thinking what this movie was about and i can't think of anything but at the same time i really enjoyed this movie from first minute. Exactly in first minute i said out loud this one is a good one and it didn't disappointed me till last minute. didn't get what Happened in the bank.

I thought this was a really beautiful story about a gentle, innocent soul (think Dostoevsky’s ‘The Idiot’). The element about different time periods I believe explains itself within the story as being of a fantastical almost mystical nature. Perhaps it is even an exploration of a ‘Christ-like’ character. And I think the juxtaposition of the first half of the film and the last half was less of a critique of capitalist nature and more about the tendencies of human nature to take things for granted and take advantage of others for selfish gain. I actually had the opposite experience of you where I really enjoyed the first half with it’s laid-back pacing and portrayal of an idealic setting that is almost stuck in a past time period, and yet in their ignorance they do not realize ‘what they’re missing out on’. In this way, I think it’s also a dialogue about ‘freedom’ and at what cost our current systems come at. To each their own 🤷♂️
Very interesting movie. At first I thought the time period is early 20th century. Then I pushed it back to mid century, then to the 80s, then 90s.

I haven't looked into it but it would be interesting to know. Then again the title does make sense as he is the main character we follow, but his character and story just aren't very interesting. I don't know.
