Efra got it right, ballads and rnb songs are more commercial genre here. Although POP is now rising cause of idol groups like SB19. But SB19 also have 2 love ballad songs in their album. Tilaluha and Hanggang sa huli. If you wanna check their song 2 ballad songs in wish107.5 then these are the links ruclips.net/video/5VulQNq1ZmA/видео.html ruclips.net/video/aN_kkamIgmM/видео.html

this is just based upon my observation but i think the reason why filipino music hasn't broken through the international scene yet is because our taste in music is very different from the music that is currently consumed around the world... it may just sound too old school for some, but for us, leaning more towards ballads speak to our hearts and souls more than anything... we believe that the primary purpose of music isn't for entertainment but to spread a message... if you listen to our old songs, they are pretty much similar to the new ones... and i find it so amazing because this is the result of our unchanging values and the preservation of our culture... so no matter what the world thinks, we still continue to produce this type of music because for us it's the essence of being a filipino... you can try to research about "kundiman" so you can understand what i'm talking about better... more power to you and your channel! ❤️

This song won Best Ballad recording at this years AWIT awards (2020). The AWITS in the Philippines are like the equivalent of the Grammys in the US. It's a rare true duet in my Opinion. Most recent mainstream collabs you get two artists simply trading lines. Here the harmonies are so seemless and take the center of the song from beginning to end. It's an underrated Gem!

Filipinos love for love songs rooted deep in our culture. We have a traditional genre of art song we call "Kundiman" which are Filipino love songs. The melody is characterized by a smooth, flowing and gentle rhythm with dramatic intervals. Kundiman was the traditional means of serenade in the Philippines. It was also used by our revolutionaries against Spaniards to show love for our country. Kundiman writers sought poetry for their lyrics, blending verse and music in equal parts.

Imagine this: a group of guys looking up to a window with a lady looking out, somebody in the group playing a guitar and one or two of the guys sings with it, wooing the lady with a song. The main singer is usually the one who likes the lady. That is a harana. Courting a lady with the song is the norm I think 100 years back. The venue changed as time went by, but the guys with the guitar didn't. That is the reason why there is a lot of love declarations in the music of our country.

    • @cafetbeh8408
      @cafetbeh8408 3 года назад

Yeah it is, especially during the Spanish era until 70s, this was how the typical Filipino courtship was done, and it gradually declined since when the karaoke/videoke was invented and introduced by a Filipino inventor in 1978.

Dude, 90s kids grew up watching THALIA TELENOVELAS and listening to her MUSIC! IT WAS SO CRAZY SHE EVEN WENT HERE A COUPLE OF TIMES AND HAD A MASSIVE CONCERT AND HAD A MEETING WITH THE PRESIDENT! SHE WAS HUGE! If I remember it correctly, it was her trip to the Philippines where she realized she has to learn to speak in English! She basically started the trend. After that, there were manyyyyy telenovelas popping on every TV network and some even had a Filipino Remake.

Efra is right, ballads and r&b are the go-to genre in the country. One reason being that the Filipinos are emotional and like music that touches the soul. Well, in every type of music anyway, even dance/pop, the beats or lyric should be heartfelt for it to become popular with the people. Sarah Geronimo’s influence can be seen and felt between these two artists that she coached in The Voice Philippines which also, by the way, includes, Darren Espanto during The Voice Kids. Another wonderful reaction from you guys. Thanks.

And yes, Ballad is the most commercial genre in the Philippines. It's definitely the benchmark for any singer who wants to make it mainstream. They need to be able to deliver ballads. Regarding the lyrics, it's only been recently that is somewhat ok to listen to suggestive (not even explicitly sexual) songs. It basically, narrowed the subject for the songwriters. The other popular subject are social commentary.

Marimar, maria mercedes, rosalinda, gata salvaje, chabelita, and a lot of them were. In fact, latin telenovelas has been a huge influence with local soap opera tv novelas even down to this very day. Yes Efra you're right. Common market here in the Philippines are ballad songs (specifically sad love songs). That's why "Tilaluha" of SB19 was pushed to the side (before) even the lyrics and musical arrangement was great. There are too many great ballad songs being released but only few will make it to the public ears because of too many competition. That's why we also have a vast number of great artists here because they find a way to be unique and outstanding in a nation of FULL of talented singers. If you want to be known by the masses here you can't be "good enough", you should be "I'll blow your brains out" artist. WishBus is a great platform for all artists, coz they invite them regardless if they have a record label or just outstanding singer/s. It is one way of introducing under rated artist to the nation...and now to the whole world.

Singing competitions and programs in schools or your barrio or town, or even an ordinary family entertainment is one good reason of why ballad and rnb is a big in the Philippines. The first songs that i remember singing is Whitney Houston songs at the age of 5. And when your family knows you can sing they will ask you to sing for other people. But at 5 you're not asked to sing twinkle twinkle little star but a the greatest love of all. I cant sing it anymore but it hits home (like you say it) everytime i hear ballads. And as singing competitions is a culture in the Philippines of course you go for the most complex songs to compete. And if your an audience you would always go for the most impressive complex singer. And those songs are most of the time ballads and rnb also theater piece, old jazz and old rock power songs. Basically we love that climax and complex songs 😂 that will give you chills. ... And then you get together with your friends and one will be playing guitars and your singing jason mraz.

Yeah, we also have telenovelas here in the Philippines. Most of them are original and some are adaptations and imported like the Spanish telenovelas, Thailand, Japan, Korea, etc. So our television here wants to give its viewers the feel of watching foreign dramas maybe to let every Filipino know that these are other countries' customs and traditions so that when we go to those countries, we already have an idea of how they look and what they eat or drink and many other things to know to help us adapt to a new environment quite easily. :)

If you wonder why philippine ballads rarely have spanish words is because, most ballads are written as formal poems. Which basically composed of formal tagalog, very few barrowed words. Spanish, english mix are usually informal tagalog

"Love songs and/or ballads go to genre in the phils" --> is 100% correct, at least in my opinion.
I think the reason is bc "Harana", which is in our culture (that probably was adapted from spanish culture or something like it) is a form of courting the person ur interested in by way of singing; usually just below the window of ur room's inteded, is what made us used to those songs (which also explains why filipinos are so into melodrama) and yes "telenovela" is a staple here in the phils ^^''' I still remember the popularity the show Marimar invoked when I was a kid. I still know the lyrics to the op song heh. We even made a filipino version of it years after the orig ended.
There's a song called "Harana" by the band Parokya Ni Edgar (my fave fil band translated in english means "is "Harana" (courting by singing) still popular?" which I always answer as YES... it still happens. Lots of songs made by artists usually have a specific person they're conveying it to. Just so happens that it becomes a top nationwide song while at it. XD

when i was young, south american tele novela's are often played in Philippines network with Filipino dubbing. Also our teleserye (like telenovelas) here are quite dramatic too. probably that's where we got it from haha

We do have telenovelas here in PH too. As a kid, I remember watching the likes of Marimar, Maria Mercedes, and Rubì (which were dubbed in Tagalog, and were later on remade by Filipino actors). Philippine TV has been a rich part of family culture here. It has become the pinnacle of primetime TV. Common plot points such as rags-to-riches stories, uncanny love between the rich and the poor, family conflicts, some fantasy/comics adaptation, and sibling rivalry abound our telenovelas especially during the 00s. We're also keen into remaking/adapting/dubbing international novelas including those coming from Latin America in the 90s, and Korean and other Asian novelas in 00s-present. A new surge of short series tackling LGBTQIA+ stories (mostly focused on Boys' Love or BL) has come during the pandemic, and is available on digital platforms such as RUclips.
From these series came beautiful music that has been staple karaoke favorites here in the Philippines (of course, that, besides movie OST -- which is for a totally different day).

Ballads and sentimental music are big. Anything that tugs the heart strings, emotional and cathartic, even the thuggish dudes sitting around drinking will belt out the sappiest 70s ballads and not care a bit to expose their vulnerability.
Let me be demanding and bold to say it's time to introduce us to Papa (I think I only saw the back of his head during the cooking show).
