    Thanks. I love the post it note tip. Here may be a tip for you - a charcoal block retains heat so it is not good as a heat sink. Use a crosslock tweezer or even some heatshield paste. But thanks for addressing the problem of soldering rings onto the end of small chains. I’ve had problems too. It’s not easy.

    They also make sticky back sandpaper if you don't want to mess with double sided tape. I found it on Amazon. I don't think it's available at your local home improvement or hobby shops (at least not in the USA).

    • @stephencoster9532
      @stephencoster9532 2 года назад

      You don't need sandpaper as that's for working wood. You need emery cloth. Is that available sticky backed?

    • @stephencoster9532
      @stephencoster9532 2 года назад

      Sorry, or use wet and dry paper and that is not glue-backed as it would affect the glue when you wet it.

  • @TessellatedHeart
    @TessellatedHeart 3 года назад +3

    for sanding sticks what I like to do is lay the sanding stick on the paper, score, roll to the next side while holding the paper to the stick so it start to roll up, repeat until you've rolled the entire sheet up on the stick then secure ends tightly with rubber bands. when the outer layer is used, you can easily tear off to the next layer. This is handy if you sand a lot because it means you don't have to stop what you're doing to re-make the stick.

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  3 года назад +1

      great tip Samantha! I tried it before, but for some reason it didn't work for me, the paper kept unrolling. I need to try again 😃

    • @Smiidi22
      @Smiidi22 3 года назад +1

      After rolling the paper around the stick just put a little bit of super glue on the bottom of the paper. You won’t need the rubber bands. The tension of rolling up the paper will hold it in place at the top. Works like a charm.
      Extra bonus if you are working with gold you can rip off the part you polished the gold with to collect for refining

      @@TheArtOfMetalsmithing the way many people do it is to wrap masking tape around the abrasive paper at both ends to hold it on. That jeweller who talks too much has a video showing how, including scoring every time you change sides when wrapping. xx

    Soldering jump rings onto chains is my nemesis. xD either the solder flow to much or i end up melting the chain. I have bought a something to paint on to stop the flow, and also a cooling paste to protect the rest of the chain, but have not tested it yet. :P
    Love your tips and hacks videos :D

      I totally understand! It can be very tricky and takes some time to practice. But you'll get there! I'm very curious how these solutions will work for you! I've never used the cooling paste before, it sounds very interesting. Thank you so much for watching! I'm glad you've enjoyed it! :)

    How long does a 8/0 saw blade last you before you have to change it/it breaks? Can you give some tips specifically on keeping saw blades from breaking? I really like 8/0 so I use it on thicker metal even though guides say you're not supposed to because I like how clean it leaves the edges/lines, but I go through about 1-2 blades a day, is this normal, or do you have tips on how to make them last longer?

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  3 года назад +4

      Technique is important, applying just enough pressure to not break the blade, but to guide it and let it cut and using wax too. When I use 8/0 (which I agree with you, it's the cleanes one! But it's the finest one too, so it can break) I do break it. It really depends though, becasue sometimes I won't break it for days and I just change it when the blades are run down, and sometime I'll breat 3 in a row. I don't have any specific tips other than what I mentioned at the beginning of my reply. Definitely the technique is most important in my case. Being gentle, allowing the saw to do it's work and not pressing or pushing to much. Stop to relax your hand from time to time, to make sure that you lower the tension :)
