      The ''people'' were a few oddballs living in a parallel universe. Konstantinos is a very controversial figure in Greece for very good reasons. As a person he was not unpleasant, many could say that he was very likeable. As a head of state he was completely incompetent, a trait that run in a family that caused not too few disasters in Greece. On a private personal level I think everybody sympathise with his family, but on the political level nobody will miss him. Well... expect from a few crazy people or descendants of his cronies.

      He had his Greek citizenship removed and wasn’t allowed to set foot in Greece. He had to travel on a Danish passport. This was not his choice. He was only allowed to go to Greece to bury his mother for one day. Disgraceful behavior on the part of the Greek government. What were they so afraid of ? Kings/Queens are symbols of unity today. They don’t do “politics”! It’s the politicians who are the crooks!

    • @joek600
      @joek600 Год назад +8

      @@jamielyallleathan Because he attempted a coup with his generals back in the 60's only to be outmanuevered by a coup of CIA backed colonels. The result was 7 years of dictatorship that led to (although not his fault) the Cyprus invasion and alot of political division. Usually the people think of the British Royals and their symbolic role, but in Greece the royal family meddled ALOT in politics always making it worse in the end. His mother Frederica was infamous for political shenanigans that completely destabilized the political scene.
      Konstantinos as a person was very likeable, especially as an older man. But as a political figure he was a walking disaster and a monument of incompetence. Generally something that people do not know is that the ''royal family'' was not Greek at all. They were a mix of petty nobles from Germany and Denmark mostly, imposed on the newly created Greek state, because all the great powers of the time were monarchies and had the so called ''Holly Alliance''. A pact to defend each other's monarchies in case of civil unrest. The Greek revolution against the Ottomans was almost destroyed because of this and the Greeks only managed to get support when they convinced the ''Great Powers'' that they did not rebel against the institution of monarchy but against a foreign occupier. In order to convince the rest Europeans they accepted the appointment of Otto of Bavaria. When Otto was ousted (for many internal and external reasons) the european powers ushered in the grand grand father of Konstantinos and started a new ''royal line'' which was Greek only in name offcourse.

    I was living in Greece outside of Athens in 1967 when the Colonels’ “Coup” occurred. My landlord spoke French and explained to me what was happening. I tried to drive to downtown Athens where my office was located but was stopped by soldiers with sub-machine guns pointing through the window of my car. What followed was a very strange period whereby friends who would otherwise have spoken to me openly in public no longer did. There were rumours of people being tortured on some of the islands, and of the great stadium in Athens being used to house prisoners. I heard reports of King Constantine failing to assemble enough of a fighting force to challenge the colonels and ultimately giving up rather than plunge the country into civil war. I greatly admired the King and was very disappointed when his challenge failed. Nevertheless, I love Greece, its people, culture, food, language, remarkable scenery, the beauty of the islands, and so much more. I really hope to go back one day.

      They’re chanting his name or the family’s names, chanting Pavlos, singing the Greek national anthem, giving condolences, saying he is immortal and will be remembered forever, “long live the king. long live” and the slogan “bread, olives and Kotso the King” that was popular during his reign. (Kotso is a Greek nickname for Constantine.) Also dispersed “we love you’s”. The part with the loud boos was directed at this government’s Cabinet Ministers in attendance since they denied a state funeral.

People were lined up since the night to attend the lying in state and many didn’t even get to the coffin because they only scheduled four hours. • @jayciejaybee7872
      @jayciejaybee7872 Год назад +1

      Charles and Constantine were very close. They're 8 year age difference. It's written in sever royal biographies that Constantine was the utmost support to Charles during his relationship problems. It's said that Constantine had a big birthday party which he invited Charles and Camilla to. The Queen was also invited and this was at the time the Queen wanted NOTHING to do w/ Camilla and most would not have dared to invite Camilla with the Queen in presence at that time. They said that party was a turning point of Charles/Cam relationship. Charles selected Constantine as Williams godfather, and William is the godfather to Constantine's eldest grandson. I am supportive of Charles, however he needs to remember that he is the at the bottom of the pecking order of precedence amongst the world's monarchs, as his reign has just begun. He is NOT his mother, it is not beneath him to attend events like weddings and funerals on the continent. If he and William continue to abstain from events like these, that perhaps other royals will not show up for their events, and who could blame them? I'm sorry, but part of what makes things like royal weddings such a spectacular is that the fans who come out to support them want to see all the other royals from foreign countries in their jewels etc as well. Just like domestically, Charles always says slimmed down monarchy. Well from a tourist/fan girl perspective, my interest would drop to 1% if all we ever saw were Charles, Cam, Will, Kate and kids. I love a full balcony with princesses and dukes and earls, and lady's. I am a fan of the Princess Alexandra's, Lady Sarah Chatto, the York princesses, etc,
      . Charles, you're not you're mother, you and your wife will not be overshadowing anyone if you go to things like this. Do better.
