I found that if you put the part in a cleaning solution in a ziplock bag and put it in an old crockpot filled with water it works merciless in 24 hours. The bag sitting in water pushes the gag and cleaner close to the part, the heat loosens to grease along with the cleaner. Put it on low and wash it off tomorrow. Works like a champ. Great video! Good job.
Hey I got 08 accord 4cyl I just got this alternator used I had it from July 23 and it’s acting up now but the guy I purchased it from told me to just clean it with gas he said that oil got into it from my power steering is that what happens most time ? And once I do that will my battery light come off and alternator start charging again cause it stopped charging like two days ago
My alternator got soaked in oil from my valve gasket, it was bad my car died, but I sparred brake clean and it works (for now) my car still showing battery and abs warnings. Any suggestions boss?
get a solvent bath at harbor freight you won't screw up your sink and no fortune in cleaners, but for a really shiney alt, take it to a buffing wheel and make it like chrome.thank you great job man.
Thank you for this video. My teenaged son was getting frustrated with scrubbing. Nice to know how to get it clean with degreaser. We even have LA's Totally Awesome, I usually use it for laundry. He just told me he was worried about getting the alternator wet. We will have to come up with an alternative way to get it dry. Wet, fall weather is here where we are.
thanks a bunch, i just got a used alternator and it looked the same exact way with all the grease and crap. i wasn't sure if i could get the alternator wet.
@Misirac altudamecekas protected enough. Something that is used often wont have the issue with moisture like a car that is barely driven. They drive humvees completely under water.. jeeps get completely submerged and the alternators are fine.
For everyone freaking out about getting water on the alternator, it will be fine as long as you let it dry COMPLETELY the only time it would short something out and ruin it if you put it back on the car soaking wet
--- that's NOT a dirty alternator - that pretty much gleams - can still see what color the metal is - I'm cleaning the alternator off a 50 year old tractor - the first tool of use is a shovel ------- maybe a small pick next
LOL!! I bought a BMW with an alternator that looks like the one in the video. I took a wire wheel to it and got nervous when chunks of goupy carbon and oil started getting all over the stuff inside the alternator. this made me feel better
Sir,great video. I cant believe i saw an alternator soaked in water and it still works! Would you think the alt could be some what cleaned while still on the car, then hosed down softly? Thank you.
Stephen Kacin I personally wouldn't do it on the car, theres a chance you could wet something that is sensitive to water. Off the car is safer. Just to keep you updated , I still own the car with the same alternator in the video. Still going strong.
Off the car is safer. Losen the belt 2 or 3 bolts It’s off the car Sometimes you have to take the tire off. But if you wanted to do it while on the car: Remove the positive battery cable Remove the b+ terminal cable Wash it Use compressed air to blow it out Let it sit and dry. How long? Idk. Could be days in cold or humid climate do not use direct sunlight which may harm other components in your engine bay. No direct heat (maybe a hair dryer on low) Only plug things back in once it’s been fully dried.
My alternator was drenched in oil got a code of power loss.. I sprayed purple degreaser drove it for 30 min then drenched it in degreaser runs smooth and no more code
This is a terrible idea- you are washing debris into into the windings and places it should not be. Why not just take it apart clean it correctly then replace the bearings and have some piece of mind that you did not make the situation worse.
DubstepIsPower yes I am pretty sure it would be ok . I just use the sun's heat to evaporate the water.if the whole alternator is warm it gets the inside very well.
I wouldn't recommend doing this. It could possibly get into the bearing and remove needed grease in them. It could also get into the brushes and cause damage.
Most electronics can be cleaned with clean soapy water, as long as you rinse them thoroughly with distilled water afterwards, and they must be TOTALLY dry before re-assembly and power-on. I'd be careful of washing grease out of bearings though...
I bought an alternator and when it arrived at the repair shop it had grease residue. That seemed unusual. The mechanic kept telling me it was new. I’m not a mechanic, but I didn’t think that the grease residue was a good sign. After replacing the alternator my lights were flickering. Not a good sign. Auto Zone tested the battery and it measured I needed a nee battery. The battery isn’t even two years old. What is your opinion? I bought a refurbished alternator from Auto Zone today and it’s clean with a tag! So, I went back to the mechanics shop and the owner told me to bring the car in the morning. I told him the car was still hesitating, and jerking. I’m so disgusted with what is happening. Any advise. I want to take the owner to court to try to get my money back. I think the owner was hoping everything would work out right.
I tried this and my alternator was screaming like porn star getting banged with a porcupine. Then it started smoking worse than snoop dogs limo. It smelled worse than a bag full of sweaty racoon assholes. So basically this did not work. But the good news is my new alternator is clean and shiny.
tedfromreceiving I guess it would depend on how many miles is on your alternator. bearings. awesome may have washed out remaining lubrication. Sorry it didn't work out for you.

I cover the inside and outside of my alternator with traffic film remover and squirt the jet wash on it and in it while its on the car and the engine is running, the spinning flings the water out and you have no problems, ths battery light might flicker a bit, and the fan belt squeals if it slips, but it doesnt do any harm 👍

Can you clean with Awesome and hot water while the alternator is still on the car?

I diluted it in 50/50 with water.
Doesn't this also de-grease the Bearings???
Did you take anything out the alternator to avoid shorting anything out? Or you just cleaned it right after removing it from the engine?
Yes I just started cleaning it when I pulled it from the engine I didn't take anything off the alternator itself
