Handsewing is a great skill to have in your toolbox! I'm going to show you a couple stitches that every sewer should know!
Hi, I'm Angela Wolf! Let me show you two versatile hand stitches: slip stitch and blind hem stitch.
For both these you only need a single thread, so I will pull out about this much - too long of a piece of thread will get twisted and knot up. Cut the thread and tie a knot.
Slip stitch is not only great for hemming, but attaching lining, trims and much more.
Begin by hiding the knot within the hem allowance fold. Starting a quarter of an inch away - grab one or two fibers from the fabric and then take the needle straight across into the hem allowance fold - then slide the needle along the inside of the fold - exiting it about a quarter of an inch away.
I will do a couple more stitches - again grab a thread of the fabric and insert your needle into the hem allowance fold.
Notice how all of these threads are in an even diagonal and on the right side of the fabric they are almost invisible!
To finish, take your needle back through where that last stitch just came out on the hem allowance. Pull the thread until you have a loop about this size, and run your needle through twice, and pull it tight to make a secure knot. Leave a thread tail and insert the needle into the hem allowance to bury it an inch inside.
Now you have a perfectly slip-stitched hem! Even with contrasting thread you can't see the stitches on the right side!
Let’s move on to the blind hem stitch! Although you can do this with the sewing machine, sometimes sewing the hem by hand looks better and you really can’t see the stitches from the right side of the garment - so it's a true blind hem!
Start by folding back the edge of the hem allowance about a quarter of an inch to half an inch.
Grab a stitch from inside the hem allowance. Then moving forward about 1/4" grab two threads from the fabric. Then go back to the inside of the hem allowance, grab a few threads of the fabric and go back across to the right side of the fabric.
Continue to go back and forth, being careful not to pull these threads too tight. Take a close look -- you can just barely see the stitches from the right side.
To finish I put my needle straight across - slip it through the loop twice, pull it twice and hide the thread tail - that's it!

Thank you so much! I have a pair of pants I really love and the hem of one of the legs fell down and I had no idea how to fix it... If I had a similar color thread I think it would've been better but I sewed it up like this and you can barely tell from far away which is the goal! It was so easy to follow along with the video ❤️

      Ok. Update.
      A few things to know.
1 - Have thread on hand. Fishing line is "apparently" not a suitable replacement.
2 - It will probably, more than likely NOT look professional the first (or second) time you do it.
3 - Maybe ask another physical human, who is aware how this is supposed to go to possibly supervise you and/or help, for a quicker completion time.
All in all. I did it, it's holding, it looks like I used a stapler and a fork to do it but it's HOLDING.
      Thank you

Not enough info? She shows you, step by step, what to do - and what to look for. When you say "someone like me", are you referring to people who don't like using the pause button? Nothing's stopping you from replaying it over and over. (That's how I learned how to cut up a whole chicken.)

I like your clips, but they sometimes fly by too fast. For example, when you're talking about folding back the hem allowance to hide knots or perform some part of a stitch, it can be so confusing. That double fold thing is tricky. You tend to roll back the folds too fast! With things upside down, inside out (as hems are) people get dizzy; especially if they're new to sewing. Would be helpful to do things like that more slowly. I get that the idea is to convey how quick and easy it is, but it's really only quick and easy if you've been doing it for ages. Many people might need reminding what a hem allowance actually is etc. But thank you for the clip!

I know this is 2 yrs old & in the event you haven't found the answers you are looking for here goes: The Hem is the bottom most edge of your garment i.e the bottom of your pant legs or skirt. The Hem Allowance provides the excess fabric required to create a clean finished look. The Hem line is where you want the garment to fall like exactly at your ankles, your Hem Allowance is longer than that point so that you can fold up the raw edges to hide them on the inside of the garment. In trousers this may be a double fold up to the Hem line & the two hand stitches shown is this video is how to finish the Hem for a clean look. I hope this is helpful.

I have a question. I am not that great at hand sewing for a professional look. I press large patches on denim and wool varsity jackets, but I’d like to sew them on where they look professional. Can I do this by hand with such thick materials? If I cannot, what type of machine would I need taking into consideration how bulky sewing the back of a jacket would be? I’m just visualizing. I have no clue. Thank you!

    • @CraftsyYouTube
      @CraftsyYouTube  2 года назад +2

      Hi Stephanie,
I'd be worried that hand sewing through the thick materials would be quite difficult. You'd need a larger needle and a thimble, at the very least, and even then it would probably be quite a struggle.
Machine stitching would work much better. You wouldn't need any special machine, any home-sewing machine should do the trick, as long as it's well-made. You can straight stitch the perimeter of the patches, or use a zigzag stitch. If you decrease the stitch length of a zigzag so the threads lay right next to each other and completely cover the fabric beneath them, it's called a satin stitch, and is a popular method for attaching patches.
If you plan to use the sewing machine for more sewing projects in the future, you might invest in something with more features. But Brother makes some good lower-priced models that are good starter machines. I used the Brother CS6000i for quite a while, before I upgraded to my Pfaff Passport 2.0. If you can go into a machine dealer and test drive some of the machines, it always helps with making the decision.
      Hope this helps!
      Best,
      Nicki
