Last summer I was fishing with a buddy and his teenage son . I announced I had a fish biteing my crayfish and I was about to set the hook, he casted anyway right where I had, I yelled at him of course, we both hooked a fish only to find it had eaten both our baits
Like you have never walked away from a pole to pee or something we all have at some point. Plus what's the point of having a watch dog if the dog doesn't watch the poles 🙄🙄
Haven't lost one ice fishing but when i was a young pup, 13 or so, i had bought myself a new Zebco 33 and rod combo. I rode my bike down to the lake for some cat fishing. I found myself a Y limb, shoved it into the ground as best i could, rigged up my line, cast it out, placed it down onto the holder and tightened up the slack. I stepped away to get a big rock to place on the rod handle so a fish couldn't flip my rod up. I heard something and turned around to see my brand new rod and reel leaving a trail of air bubbles going through the water. I stood there feeling deflated, i worked hard to buy that. Plus knowing what was going to happen when I got home and dad found out. That hour bike ride took a lot longer going back. Dad did not disappoint either. That one took awhile to recover from.

I've lost a few rods combos like this ice fishing... Last time I lost a rod combo I marked the location with gps, came back a few weeks later made a bunch of holes in a grid and used my under water camera to search and actually found the rod. I still fish with it. A small piece of bungee cord (or heavier braid 80#) tied from the stand to the rod would have prevented this. Fish pulls in the rod, the stand can't go through the hole (unless the fish is a monster), rod can be pulled back in via braid/bungee and the fish retrieved. Bells are nice, but the rod can still go in before you get there.
