    Why did I become a lawyer? Do I want to make partner? How many hours a week do I work? Is life as a lawyer not insanely stressful?
    I've been a qualified corporate lawyer for about 6 months now, and I felt like it was time to answer some of the biggest questions people have about working in big law. There are for sure ups and downs in this job, and so I want to be open about what that really means - how do I feel when I have to give up plans? Is the salary worth it? Do I actually enjoy my job?
    If there is one thing I've learned since going into full-time work, it's that the grass is always greener. People in high-flying jobs earning big money sometimes wish they could live life at a slightly slower pace, and people who are don't earn so much or work such long hours wish they had a bit more spending power or a slightly more challenging role. So, when I answer these questions, I am honest, but I am also mindful of how easy it is to criticise what we have without appreciating it for the positives.
    Corporate law definitely is not an easy job. It requires hard work, patience, and an ability (from time to time) to suck up a long night spent doing something you'd rather not do. But it also brings with it the opportunity to work with insanely smart people on huge deals, to think, perform under pressure, to work as a team, and to get sh*t done.

    About Me
    I'm a lawyer, part-time RUclipsr, son, brother, startup founder, fiancé, black coffee drinker and plant dad. I graduated from Cambridge University (where I studied French and Spanish), topped my law school class and now work for a corporate law firm in London as a trainee solicitor (which takes up a lot of my time)!
    Around that, I'm a big fan of discovering new ways of thinking, of balancing work with life, and of performing to the very best of my ability. Ohh, and being happy. And I try to share all that on this RUclips channel 😀
    Fun fact: I believe we massively overplay the role of “natural talent” 😮 AND… I also believe that TOGETHER, WE ARE ALL CAPABLE OF POSITIVITY, PRODUCTIVITY AND SUCCESS.

    60+ hr weeks and sometimes weekends??? I'm glad I'm in my 40s and can do half of that! I realise it's not every week, but life is too short and I prefer to enjoy time with my kids and hobbies and friends.
    Kudos to you Liam definitely not for me. But I've been through all the corporate work and now can choose my own time and work. But I also don't live in London, and never would want to go back to that insane corporate environment.

    Very good advice (I am an older lawyer). I agree that as you get more senior although you have more control of your life (I can work whenever I like) you still are giving the clients what they want when they want it. One reason I am still doing all this at my age is because I have always tried to get enough sleep, have children, balance my life and it is still huge fun to practise law every day.

They are really helping me in my preparation for LLB entrance exam here in India so that I can become a corporate lawyer like you one day. Do make a video if you have any other techniques or suggestions that you have not shared before which we can incorporate in our study schedule which can help us improve our exam preparation . Thanks again

      That’s called public interest. Football is one of the most popular sports in the world, meaning the higher the public interest, the more money invested into it = higher pay, bigger contracts and sponsorships.
      The same goes with law firms, the higher the interest in clients to work with a law firm, the more work = higher fees and higher bonuses, more pay for the law firm.
      It’s really not that difficult to understand.
      Your example between a lawyer and a sports renowned professional is a bad example. Even a top cricket, tennis or even rugby player will get paid more than a typical corporate lawyer. Im not sure what your argument is.
      Blame the public interest on why footballers get paid so much. It’s called business, otherwise the money ends up going to the owners (who are renowned as snakey and dodgy businessman anyway in the football world).

    • @mindcache5650
      @mindcache5650 Год назад +1

      @@jameswatley8561 Painters and decorators from East Ham got jobs at money brokers in the City in the 1980s and earned £ 300,000 a year then. So your argument collapses. Market makers at LME firms from Essex were on £500,000 per year out of secondary school . I was there. It’s not difficult to comprehend if you do your research properly and have the experience. The simpleton version. Lawyers get paid about £40 per hour when you get your calculator out . After 5 years of Tertiary Study . Still unsure ? Pay isn’t all its cracked up to be .

    • @jameswatley8561
      @jameswatley8561 Год назад +1

      @@mindcache5650 again public interest! How can you compare the 1980s traders/brokers when the financial market wasn’t as regulated as it is now to todays footballers who are getting paid hundreds of thousands a week. Painters and decorators would fall in that catergory because they probably had good chat and communication when it comes to sales. Also the 1980s was probably the peak when it came to money broking, Fx etc, it was new to the market and everyone wanted a piece of it, again market interest. You go where the market is. Secondly your original argument was comparing lawyers to footballers with half a GCSE.
      Public interest!!! It doesn’t even need to be footballers, tennis players any sport which has a massive platform and viewing interest will attract sponsorship and money towards that individual or club because it benefits the investors. Naturally inflation and spending will go up because of competition and bigger investors. I’m providing some pretty basic knowledge here with all due respect.
      I really don’t understand your argument. If your argument was ‘why should footballers get paid so much with half a gcse’ then that’s fair enough, but I think I have already answered that question.
      For example, if a ftse 100 clients needs a law firm to assist with a massive transaction, they are likely to go with the top tier law firm instead of a domestic law firm, again because of their platform, because of the market interest and clients they have worked with which means more money.
      I don’t know where your argument is going.
