  • Optical emission spectroscopy, or OES, is a well trusted and widely used analytical technique used to determine the elemental composition of a broad range of metals.
    OES can analyze a wide range of elements from hydrogen to uranium in solid metal examples covering a wide concentration range, giving very high accuracy, high precision and low detection limits. The elements and concentrations that OES analyzers can determine depend on the material being tested and the type of analyzer used.
    Compared to other analytical techniques, OES has many advantages: it’s fast and relatively easy to use, it measures a wide range of elements and concentrations in many different types of materials, including important elements such as carbon, sulfur, phosphorous, boron and nitrogen. It’s extremely accurate when measuring low levels of trace and tramp elements, and it’s low-cost.

    I have done the chemical analysis of the sample by OES but did not understand how the composition came in 5min. But in the next 5 min understand the concept very clearly after watching this video. Thank you for this.

      ICP-OES & ICP-AES are two terms for the same thing. O = optical (because you're using light); A = atomic (because you're looking at what types of atoms are there).

    I am still baffled..
    Is this method uses Fourier transform method to capture/split (using monochromator) the light emitted from the arc lightning or spark to the sample?
    If it is, would the monochromator move back and forth towards the light source from the sample?

    • @Muonium1
      @Muonium1 2 года назад

      no. the light from the sample is hitting the diffraction grating, getting dispersed into a spectrum, and falling on a long linear ccd detector that measures all wavelength intensities at the same time. there is no fft and no interferogram.

      Nitrogen is bond in the metal lattice in different ways. For example also in nitrides. That means Nitrogen will stay in the "solid metal" and will also be excited during the OES analysis.
