I ordered the kit as soon as it was back in stock and it's really well made. I had a question so I called them and spoke to Chad. He answered my questions and set me on the path to making bespoke pens, reassured. Thanks Chad--and thanks for putting all this together in one place. Wish me luck!
I just ordered the last of everything I need today! Was a long list. Can't wait to get rolling! This is Fred from Canada that you talked to on the phone a couple of times in the last week.
Awesome! Once you get started, we hope that you share your progress with us! We do have a FB group where you can share pics if you want to check it out. Have fun!!
Love the video and series, I am really hoping to mainly use timber blanks for the body and cap and as they are not very good at taking threads would love to know if you could do or talk about how you would make the same pen in your videos but out of timber, utilising say ebonite linings in the cap and body.
Hi Chad, i live in the UK and been watching this video on kitless pens, i purchased a tenon cutter from Jim Hinze who very kindly sent me 2 blanks from his wife's company, i have all the tools now to start making one but i'm a bit confused in the video for the cap you state a 12mm tap but the one you have in the chuck is an M14_8 2LD D5 am i missing something ? also will a M13x1 mm work, kind regards Chris
I may have mis spoke as to what size I was using, you can use which ever size you want to make the cap and body threads, M12, M13 and M14 are all good sizes for the cap and body. thanks chad
Hi Chad, I'm just looking into the tools that I need to get started with these. I already have a ring making boring head that I bought from you. Is this an acceptable substitute for needing to buy a tenon cutter?
For squaring a blank before you turn, is there a tool that exists that is like a barrel trimmer, but that does not have a hole in the middle, so that you could just tap both sides of the blank and have both ends square quickly? I'd like to add some sections at the end of my blanks
Here is a link to the one that we use. There is a video there as well :-) www.turnerswarehouse.com/products/pen-blank-squaring-jig?_pos=1&_sid=7167afbd9&_ss=r
I had a look at it, looks so convenient for kit pens! But I'd like to make kitless pens as well, I'm wondering what you'd do to square the blank for kitless pens?
Thanks for being patient! For kitless, you are just turning it round, and because there is no tube to square to you are working it (flattening it up/squaring it up) with your tools as you go. (Hope that helps- if you are still curious about it, you can see how Chad does it on the kitless series here on RUclips)
Thats a great question! That we know not a ton about unfortunately. We know Record Power is big for the machines and tools, and for mandrels, taps and dies etc, we are happy to ship to the UK. (and do ship to the UK often). Wish I had a better referral for you for local, sorry about that!
usually the way we match them up is by marking the blank in some way to remind us to line them up well with the tooling. There is always a sharpie nearby for this :-) Hope that helps :-)

Awesome! you will have to let us know how they turn out! :-) If you are on FB we have a group over there where folks share pics :-)

We don't have that planned yet, but it is an excellent suggestion and something that we will for sure think about doing in the future!
Hi Chad, did you have to purchase a separate M13/M14 tap holder, or is it in the niche set regards Chris.
Great video...looking forward to watching the series! What model is your set of calipers? Thanks.
Thanks for watching! And for the feedback 😃 they are Mitutoyo but can’t remember the model off the top of my head.

You can absolutely use your boring head to cut your tenons! :-)

We use a squaring jig and a disk sander. It is super quick :-)

Epic...!!!!
Thanks!!
@@TurnersTv I have watched the whole series, just a matter of time now.... !!!
That's awesome! Once you get into it, it really builds on itself and is so fun!
Hi, Very nice work. Love the video...where can i find all these tools in UK? Thanks

Nice video! Thank you!
The cap and body pattern does not match. How to get them to match nicely?
usually the way we match them up is by marking the blank in some way to remind us to line them up well with the tooling. There is always a sharpie nearby for this :-)
Hope that helps :-)
Is the bit for the cap 12.2 or is it 12.5? The site only lists a 12mm and a 12.5mm.
It is 12.2 but you should be able to use 12.5 :-) Hope that helps!
