I had one of these, sounded great. Was thinking of getting the mxr distortion plus soley because I'm superficial and I think it looks cooler lol, loved the germanium mode on bass
As a huge fan of the dod 250, i need to try this! I have an original grey 250 from 1978 I bought for 60 bucks back 2015 and its been my favorite drive since. Seeing as they are so expensive now, ive searched for a good clone to keep on my board so i can keep the original in good condition and use for recording. Ive tried some other clones of it, but none of them did the trick except for the byoc clone. I double checked the parts of that kit to mine and they are almost identical. Sound wise, its pretty much dead on. Im very vurious to give this one a try as itll give me a bit more versatility if it can nail the grey 250 sound mine has. Thanks for the demo!
Hopefully this one will do the trick 👍 I have only ever tried dod250 clones, so I can't speak about the authenticity of that but I made an mxr dist+ myself and this sounds just as good, so I have faith. It's worth a punt for the price at least anyway. Let me know how you get on 👍
Budget King here, the very FIRST 250's were pretty much part-for-part clones of the MXR D+, so they used the germanium transistors, then by the time the "gray box" 250s were released, they were using silicon. I personally prefer silicon because they're louder, have more headroom, and they're much more stable and predictable (not effected by temperature, etc) than germanium. GREAT video demo, btw!
Yeah, the consistency of silicon is the real bonus. Silicon tends to allow more of the upper mid through as well, I have found. Germanium tends to feel softer and spongier
Mine arrived today, along with a mint condition DOD YJM 308, both sound so amazing, but the Demon FX was literally a third the cost of the DOD @ just USD $50. I'm still just trying to get acquainted with the modes, but it sounds very damn close to my DOD YJM 308, and DOD Preamp Overdrive pedals. Love it, may look into their other stuff too.
sorry to butt in but - the dod 250 does have clipping diodes . it uses 1n4148 si clipping diodes . i like to remove these , put them on a toggle and on the other side of the toggle i will put a pair of red 3mm leds . this is the way .
Germanium tends to lead to a softer feeling clipping than silicon and generally a bit lower gain. Definitely an interesting texture to have in the toolbox
@@BudgetPedalChap all caught up now. Im appalled it took me this long to notice I was missing BPC in my life. Hope this binge fixed the algorithm but if not im on it. Keep up the great work.
@@jfiery funnily enough, the podcast predates the RUclips channel (just about). I don't promote it as much as I perhaps could on the channel tbf, but I love doing it. It's like a weekly therapy session where we get to chat about guitar things 😂😂
@@he11bent6 humbuckers would give it a bit more level going into the front end so it'll drive harder, you'll get a thicker EQ too. I think it would probably sound quite nice with buckers tbf 👍
@@BudgetPedalChap thank you! I’m fairly new to using drive pedals. In the past I’ve just used a pushed custom built tube amp that is sort of an Orange/Plexi mix for natural drive.

🤣🤣 We've all been there, no judgement here. Go used and you'll get it for the price of a decent budget pedal 👍
This is better than the distortion plus. I owned the distortion plus but the Demon FX is more versatile of course.
Sounds great. I'm tempted more than ever with one of these bad boys.
Especially at the price, they are hard to resist huh?
Its a no brainer. One of the best value pedals on the market.
Excellent demo
Cheers 👍
GE with MXR is one of my favorite OD sounds and find myself using it over all my other drive pedals.
Ge diodes give a wonderful, softer vintage response. It's a great pedal for sure 👍

Clipping diodes. The gain stages are OpAmp based
Great demo 👏🏻

Thanks for letting me know. I've not tried the yjm, so it's nice to know that it's close 👍 I would encourage it, they make some fab stuff

Sorry, my mistake. I can understand why you'd go for LED clipping, it's great isn't it?
Demon is an excellent clone maker. I've never gried a germanium drive but really need to get my hands on one.

@@BudgetPedalChap you're a hard working man. Much to all our benefit.
Where to put this pedal in to the fx chain?
@@Artekey1 before any reverb and delay for sure. I'd go closer to the start with this one 👍
Is this pedal should be in amps return?
@@D.R.S.666 you could, but I think before the amp will probably yield better results as it'll push the amp harder too
I kept waiting to hear the Marshall at 10 with the pedal also on 10 and hear some Yngwie licks.
