You know, that test is far less difficult than the old RPGA one from when they required you to take one to qualify to run games for them...when they shifted from the RPGA to the Adventurer's League, they dropped the test portion of it. And they'd had a few variant tests that they'd been forced into adding due to the RPGA also covering other games than just D&D that used the same system (Originally D20 Modern and Star Wars, but several 3rd party ones...though those still required the basic test due to the books requiring the Players Handbook). The higher level ones were a pain in the rear to pass

Trauma…”YES”. I’m the forever DM even though I can name NPC…. if you give me a few hours I can. One of my players got fed up from dying over and over. She said I want to DM so I can make you suffer. I got so excited I was gonna get to play. No one in my group ever plays a bard, so I played one in her campaign. After 3 sessions the game was over and she gave up. My Bard of Elegance seduced and slept with everything and openly in public. My ten page backstory I gave her read like a black diary X rated romance novel and she was disgusted by the detail. All her violent planned out encounters were peacefully and lustfully rendered harmless. Yes I intentionally did it, and I know I ruined my shot at playing again, but to crush her soul from trauma as a player made it worth it.

NPC names are easy. I have a name generator that I use for the campaign setting (usually superhero, but there are other ones for sci-fi, fantasy, etc...) and have a sticky note with several names ready-to-go. When the players want to ask the name of the pizza delivery guy, consult a tax attorney, or find a fence for exotic jewelry: I just grab my list and pick the first name that sounds like a decent fit (I have 5-6 on the list, some sound appropriate for drug dealers and some sound like stockbrokers).
Cross the name out when you use it. Also, edit it into the GM notes on your computer (the ones you printed for the session wouldn't have it, but you can check your computer if you need the name for a future session).
I'm utterly terrible at coming up with names on the spot, so I plan ahead for it.

I cheat and have a list of random names. Sometimes I use a name generator or takes popular historical names, sometimes I just make them up or whatever but I try to have 50 names.
I also have some random pictures (taken from wherever) so I can dish out a name and a picture for a random NPC, both making my players think I am well prepared and suspect there might be more to the random NPC they ran into.
You don't want a situation where players realize you only have a couple important NPCs worked out, they will quickly realize who of them are the big bad, the disguised princess or whatever else you are trying to hide from them that way and it will impress them for how well prepared you are even if you just spent a few minutes of doing that before the campaign started.
I am also making a few somewhat important NPCs that can show up in most places in the campaign, so I can insert them whenever I need to spice things up. They might also help the PCs if they are stuck or sabotage them if things go too easy. Anything that makes the game run smoother and be more memorable.
I don't recommend letting your players make the names for unimportant NPCs because it tells them just that. Unless you are sneaky of course and have them name the hidden big bad or the assassin that have a contract on them once they think whoever they named are unimportant.
Generally, I try to have a theme for the naming in any area. Like maybe this city have mainly Saxon names, Icelandic names, Egyptian names or whatever. Adventurer stands out with more colorful names since it is a marketing strategy so they would call themselves names easy to remember and competent sounding even if they are actually baptized to "Jim" and "Nelly".
I think the players should suspect where someone is from by just hearing their name and there plenty of sites to just pick names from making that easy. That doesn't mean everyone born in a certain region must follow this convention but enough to give the players a feeling of a real place.
I also only gives last names to nobles, it is of course for historical reasons and not since I am lazy, right? Anyone else have their last name from what they work with or after where they live if they are from a small place. The smith named John would be John Smith if someone actually demanded their family name. Unless they are based on vikings, then I take their fathers name and add "son" at the end of it for males and their mothers name and end it with dottir for females, simple.
Gudrun who have the Parents Thor and Freya would be named Gudrun Freyadottir while her brother Wulf would be Wulf Thorson.
But that is just when a last name is needed, so the players know which of the 2 John is the barber and who is the smith. Usually I just have the nobles go on about their family name and everyone just give then their first name. It is super important to nobles though since their authority comes from their family.

    • @moonsoft6601
      @moonsoft6601 Месяц назад

Actually, I've found that players empathize more with npcs that they've named rather than thinking of them as unimportant. That helps when I inevitably leverage them in plot hooks and scenarios since I am currently running a sandbox.

    • @loke6664
      @loke6664 Месяц назад

@@moonsoft6601 That's odd... I wonder if that is something specific to your group or some kind of general rule?
I have noticed that having a picture make a huge difference that makes them remember and care about the NPC better and that seems to go for all players I had at least. Depending on the picture it will also influence how they see the NPC, someone that looks shifty will be seen as suspicious and for some reason do they tend to treat attractive people of both sex better then unattractive.
In any case, having some random pictures to show them helps them but if you do, they will demand you continue with it. If I don't have one for a specific NPC, they force me to find one now no matter which group it is.
One group I used to run tended to make nicknames for the NPCs but I don't think that one is something for everyone.

    1- Michael
2- Yes the rest of my life is nothing but misery and only THIS brings me joy anymore
3- I don’t need to give up any, I have way too much free time that I can devote all day to setting and preparing a campaign
4- Only so much, I’m only human
5- My friends- pretty patient since I know them and am used to their shenanigans. Strangers- Depends on how exactly they behave
6- Buddy believe me I’ve tried before
    7- Very slow
    8- Trick question, I don’t watch Anime
9- Actually my mom did make me take a theatre class in high school and I loved it
10- Biggest pain in my ass
11- Michael but for you smartass Bob works too
12- This game actually made me an Extrovert
    13- Depends on the people
14- yes but I still make awkward mistakes every now and then
15- Prepare the bartender and 2 NPcs for chatting, have at least 1 encounter ready to go if necessary to move the plot along and psych myself up for whatever happens next and make it work
16- Ask myself how the Fudge were they even able to do that, maturely let them know I did not have something prepared for this, but respect the groups creativity for somehow getting here and start making Shishkebab up
17- If you’re playing a module yes cause that’s the point but if it’s pure sandbox, only the tiniest amount.
    18- YES
19- Either accept that my players are just that strong or make a second, third, fourth, and so on phase until I feel I’ve dealt enough damage to their characters without killing them.
20- No my job as a DM is to make this game fun and exciting for my players and in doing so it will be fun and exciting for me as well.
21- 142 (took me 15 seconds to get that though)
22- same as above but I was worried for a second I might’ve gotten it wrong
23- Gilgamex, cause screw it I can put letters together and call it a name so HAH!

    1. Name of NPC?
Dog Hollow (from a book I am writing)
    2. Do you want to run a role-playing campaign?
    Yes. Next.
    3. How much sleep do you want to give up?
    A lot. I am a night owl.
    4. How much suffering can you take?
Depends on the type of suffering.
    5. How patient are you with friends?
I have no friends but I can explode if the story is getting too far out of my outlined plan.
    6. Should I write a book instead of DMing?
I Am! But the Chaos is un-resistible!
    7. How is the book coming along?
Making good progress but still more to do for me to feel happy with it.
    8. How much Anime did you watch instead of planning?
A bit. Depends on my mood. The plan is mostly staying in my brain though.
    9. Are you a theatre kid?
    I want to be.
    10. Do you have ADHD?
    Recently diagnosed with it!
    11. Name for that NPC?
Clay Golem! Friend of Dog Hollow!
    12. Are you introverted?
    Yes. Next.
    13. Do you enjoy being with people?
    Depends on my mood.
    14. Are you good at Improv?
    Not sure.
    15. Party enters the tavern. What do you do?
A party is in full swing. With bards in the corner singing a number of regional hits and the half-elf bar tender serving drinks at half price if you can give him a good story.
There is a lot to do here!
    16. You spent a lot of time building the world and the Party teleports across the world. What do you do?
Jokes on you! I built that part of the world ages ago. Now people can see it in all its glory!
    17. Is it okay to railroad your players?
Depends but I try to keep those rails in sight.
    18. How much homebrew do you need to play D&D?
Depends on the campaign and its needs.
    19. The Party defeats the BBEG. It was considered too easy. What do you do?
Congrats them on the achievement but tell them the BBEG had a devoted assistant who will follow in his master’s footsteps no matter what.
    20. Is it your job to win D&D?
No. That is for the players to do.
    21. Math. What is 125 + 48 - 43 + 12?
Had to whip out a Mummy calculator for this but it is apparently 142.
    22. More Math. Uses the same equation as before.
Mummy Calculator said it was 142
    Last question!
    23. What is the name of this NPC?
Seaweed Brain! Friend of Dog Hollow and Clay Golem.
Also Doubles As My Walking, Talking Pop Culture Reference!
    🥱
Time for a nap right after my story rant of the day.

A friend sent me this video. I did this back to him.
Question 1: Jake the Tavern Owner.
      Question 2: Yes.
Question 3: I already struggle to get a full 8 hours...so nothing changes.
Question 4: Oldest child, born with a social disability, who puts himself out of his way for others. So, suffering, Yes.
Question 5: Very patient. Not saint levels, but I don't give in to provocation too easily.
Question 6: No. Because books require a ton more work, being a DM is easier because we steal elements from writing and don't adhere to the rules that literature writers have to.
Question 7: Not writing one, so it isn't "coming along".
Question 8: Don't watch anime, but I do watch RUclips videos when I don't feel like working on planning as much.
Question 9: I was never a theater kid.
Question 10: No, but I was diagnosed with other things. (Asperger's Syndrome, minor OCD, and minor depression.)
Question 11: Still Jake the Tavern owner, he now has a daughter named Jill. I felt a son named "Jack" was too obvious.
Question 12: Normally yes. With my friend group I am bit more extroverted.
Question 13: Sometimes, depends on the people.
Question 14: I am okay at improv.
Question 15: I describe the tavern scene, setting the stage for the NPCs there, and the general mood. Then draw a map if/when combat ensues.
Question 16: This is never a problem as before a session, or in-between sessions I try to get an idea of what players want to do. I only make thought out plans if I know they are dedicated to a specific task.
Question 17: Railroading is only okay if you need to get side-tracked players back to the plot. The trick is make them think that doing said plot was their choice, on their terms.
Question 18: Don't play D&D, I play Pathfinder 1e. I only homebrew rules when I want to bend rules in service for the story being told.
Question 19: I threw a lot of tougher minions to soften them up, only for them to early rest with provisions for raids, night ambushes, and other means of handling them. So the meticulously put together boss fight was easier, and I congratulate them for not being careless and overconfident. And for the reader, no, this is not the first time.
Question 20: No. My job is to have the players win, but I cannot make their victory easy. They have to earn a happy ending.
Question 21: 142 I think, math is my weakest subject.
Question 22: 142, if the minus in the Formula was already accounting for DR, Energy Resist, or both.
Question 23: Jake, Jill, and I am thinking of a dead wife and mother. Name I am going with is "Terra" maybe? Still in the process of thinking it out.

In the Knights of the Dinner Table comic series, there is certification tests needed to become a Dungeon Master of their RPG Hackmaster. They even had an issue where one of the players was getting trained in encounter balancing in the back of a bar, showing examples like making the fights too easy or too hard. The character getting trained, Crutch, was a biker who got into the game and wanted to GM his own stuff after he ran a great Crime City game by playing on real life experiences. They were even overheard by a criminal friend of Crutch's who heard the trainer, Eddie, an overweight stereotypical gamer talking about "What I'd do is gas the guards, slit their throats, steal everything and get away" and took it to mean they were planning a crime so now thought the guy was a stone cold killer.

I had to take a test to become a DM once. Specifically, a Herald-level RPGA-certified DM. It was easy, mostly just about your ability to look up and interpret rules.

I have wanted to get into this game for a long time, and I've finally been able to arrange a one shot with my friend who's also played dnd.
It won't be a while until we get to play it, but I'm super stoked, and I've been watching your videos to heighten my hype for it. And to understand the rules better because I struggle to take in info just by reading words.
Funny videos and memes explaining the thing helps me out a lot

I was once a part of a discord west march server that required you to take a test to become a DM. it was horrible bias. People who were friends with the DMs had an easier time passing the test, even with insanely simple adventures. But if you weren't that close to the people judging the adventure, they suddenly became insanely nitpicky over every aspect of the adventure.

I'll take a stab at it.
    1) Rufus Bonaparte
    2) Roleplaying with possible tactical combat, but yes
    3) I'll check the budget
    4) I have alcohol
    5) Depends on how quickly and violently they deviate from their own plan that they came up with 5 minutes ago.
    6) Yes
    7) It's not
    8) I was working.
    9) No
    10) No
    11) Donovan Persimmons
    12) Yes
    13) Depends on the people
    14) Unironically no
    15) My taverns stock hallucinogens, so I prepare for things to get real weird
    16) I would make the teleport spell fail due to plot reasons, or something
    17) Don't railroad them. Just make all railways lead to the same station at varying points
    18) I either do no homebrew, or play a different system
    19) Let them celebrate? If they survive the early parts of the campaign, they deserve a little bit of an award.
    20) It's not my job, but I am sure failing to do it
    21) 142
    22) 142
    23) Larry

When the players teleport across the world, the secret is if they don't see any of that crap first, you can still use it all.
And the NPC is Waldo Butters. Never be afraid to use the hard work of others.

panic about the chaos that is about to ensue is justified, i've had more than one game where the party ends up burning down the tavern they meet in it's uncanny
the npc's name doesn't matter because none of the players will remember them
