This is ridiculous.
They should of just changed the name to Okininam. LOL
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂.....👌
So stupid.....and I'm Hawaiian?
You’re an uneducated Hawaiian
.........wow .....that's fucked up ...they shut down a business and now people are in debt and starving because of it, employees fired .....and we seen what families go through when that happens
All they had to do was change thier name
They got no problem with
JAPANESE HULA GROUPS
.
Heh I got issue with local using Tahitian names but no one complaining if they should that why can’t Tahitian do same even if Hawaiian has word to lol just saying that’s how stupid this is
@@TheHawaiianc- It is explained well in this broadcast, perhaps you can take the time to re watch if you didnt understand the message
@@lesliepropheter5040 perhaps if you get some logic and under stand how mess up this is…. Beside her going on web saying word Hawaii was copyright if she look carfully is not the word Hawaii but the style of the font their using that copyright not word Hawaii..
LOL !!!!!!! Gotta make this a T-shirt
Brah, too much already. They goin' revoke Hawaiian Airlines' name? Bank of Hawaii's name? Aloha Shoyu's name?
god forbid you provoke the locals by invoking a hawaiian deity
Does the working group not know how trademarks work?
No because they don't work in the first place.
Oh please🙄
What makes Hawaiian MORE special or protected than English?! Should England BAN the use of English words and terms for all non-native British?! This is the logic! NO ONE can OWN a language.
things get a bit more technical when it comes to the Hawaiian Language. however, I don't think the store needed to close
"No one can own a language" exactly! Tell that to the ones trying to trademark a word.
So are we going to discuss Aloha Poke again?
Why talk about the past? What about Aloha Salads!
@@testtube9423 to my knowledge Aloha Salads has not sent Cease and Desist letters to small mom and pop poke shops that had the name Aloha in their name before they did. I could be wrong, but that's why I'm still irritated by that particular chain.
@@testtube9423 Aloha Salads was created in Hawaii and only has local locations. Aloha Poke Co is Chicago based with no ties to Hawaii. Also, to my knowledge, Aloha Salads hasn't tried to send cease and desist letters like Aloha Poke has to small mom and pop poke shops having the same name long before them in and out of Hawaii. That's what pisses me off. Target the small shops that don't have the finances to fight back. It embodies this video's point - why take the name aloha if you have no aloha?
@@lalaismyalterego7444 If that's the case why not just ask them to give up the trademark? For that matter why isn't this working group focused on changing the law around that? The business was just following the law that had been laid out federally. Aloha Salads comes from a family with a haole father and a Filipino mother. No Hawaiian Roots there. It was the business decision and as long as they can use Aloha in their name which I'm sure was trademark too so should okina.
Thank you for this valuable series that is raising awareness of these questions and issues.
In business you trademark your business name. They are not claiming ownership over the word. They are building a business and trademarked their business name. So if someone else wants to start a baking business w that name they have first dibs. Someone could still start any other business with that name, but not a baking business.
Guy I’m from Hawaii born and raised Hawaiian. It’s not using the names that’s a problem, it’s when anyone including a Hawaiian tries to trademark it. She clearly stated that to you guys. We as Hawaiians are tried of getting everything taken away from us.
Words ?
Calm TF down... you say your tired of having things taken from you but probably don't do a dam thing to contribute to your own people and or to show your culture to the world through a business move such as creating your own business to show the world your culture.
Wait it just means someone can’t use that name for business purposes meaning they can’t have same one word for copyright reason.. that’s all I wonder this in result of a competing business? I mean that ok knowing dose not mean no one can’t use it in sentence etc.. its like a store clam noir meaning black its same thing its no one can’t have name of a product name noir… i think this over the top really
They shouldn’t allow trademarks on Olelo. Just make it fair use, that way no one can be greedy.
Sad they closed down . They have a trademark , stay open . I hope they open again . If anything, she was promoting the Hawaiian language.
What about Ola Brew? I think it’s disrespectful to name a place that sells/promotes alcohol Ola. Ola is life! Alcohol has been the downfall of our people ever since it was introduced by haole.
Native Hawaiian Intellectual Property Working Group? Serious.....😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 the plastic ones👌
What a fantastic shirt this newscaster is wearing. Hawiian culture is Aloha, don’t abuse it.
“Kumu were consulted”. What type of “Kumu” and who?
AINOKEA
Wait till I name my kids Kamehameha, Liliuokalani, and Jesus.
Is it protecting the native language or preventing outsiders with the business acumen to profit from it? Maybe both?
Shoulda called it "Glottal Stop"
STOPPPP U NOT EVEN FULL HAWAIIAN
Yay I never liked using one period comma exclamation or question things in my sentences anyways
What concerns me is the state of Hawaii ignores land patents while the kanaka sit houseless. On another note, the trademark is defective cause our WE kanaka own the language. This is where trademarks are defective. The news should do a full article on land patents in Hawaii. It has “everything”
to do with intellectual property right of our ancestors.
Did you pay royalties on using the English language? Sorry bro OUR ancestors own it... we take venmo or paypal...
@SeanD808 you'd have a point of the o.p tried trademarking a word.
How about wet okole seat covers ?
😓😢😥
The First Amendment is first for a very important reason.
Agreed, too bad our esteemed Chief Justice doesn’t
KALAI is spicy hotel
Timestamp: 3:05 🎯 It's the restrictive use in trademarking, the exclusivity of benefit, the further unfairness of accessibility and use without accurate intention from actual cultural origin of source, and commercial financial exploitation that lines of disrespect are drawn. Mahalo for the instructive piece.
Shouldn't have trademarked the name. Duh!
Nonsense. Iy is standard business practice to trademark the name of your business. It does not mean they own the word. It means no one else can use that name for a business of the same kind, in this case, for a bakery.
I mean I get it. Its an unfortunate circumstance overall. Corporate greed is a mf
