Square Enix: This game is part of the Fabula Nova Crystalis sub-series of FF games.

8 is the early version of 13. Game is terrible beyond description. Like an abridged version of the 13 trilogy and it’s horribly convoluted plot condensed into a 42 hours average playtime of unadulterated garbage rather than over 80 combined and not being as good graphically as the 13 games.

i too understand Kingdom Heart's entire story perfectly, it's an simple story that quickly turned into a needlessly and overly convoluted mess with plot holes and contradictions, and that's very unfortunate because that series had so much potential to be far better than it is.

I used to avoid KH spoilers cause I thought it was some sort of grand space opera deep scenaristic masterpiece. I played though parts of KH1&2 but it's actually a friend who finished them both and resumed the story for me. I agree that the devs should've moved on from there but I guess producers wanted to milk the cow. I later learned about the PSP game and 358/2 days as well as the GBA version from wikis and youtube. Then about KH3 through reviews. A tad disappointed, to say the least. A polar opposite would be the Drakengard/Nier series where all installments played a significant part. Drakengard 2 is probably the least famous but the rest.. ohmygod. If you don't have dozens of hours to spare I recommend the many YT channels that deliver a narrated synthesis of the games' stories and what made them so great. It's quite the ride, but on-par with a good tv show imho.

My biggest problem is that Lightning is too much of an asshole to be likeable. If she was a supporting character, I'd be able to tolerate her, but she's the main character that we're supposed to root for. You can start off your main characters as an asshole, but you have to sprinkle just enough traits that make her at least sympathetic, and I've seen nothing early on that justifies her behavior. She's supposed to be revolutionary character, when in reality, she's just a less appealing Cloud Strife.

    • @gabrieltejada1697

Comparing her to cloud strife is insulting cause at least Cloud didn’t beat up his team whenever they said something that annoyed him or if they did something rash/impulsive whereas Lightning on the other hand beats up snow and even smacks Feng.
She gives off the boss b**** vibe that can do whatever she wants without consequences. I bet if Snow was a girl and if lightning was a dude acting like she did in the story then she would get alot more hate, god I hate double standards soo much especially in games.

One of the problems I have with lighting is that they're trying way to hard to make her like Cloud and Squall at the same time. And not understanding why those two characters work in their games. Also the director Motomu Toriyama said that he wanted Caius's theme song(The main villain in Final Fantasy XIII 2) to surpass the one winged angel theme. I actually do think that Caius's theme song is really good actually but I don't think it's better than the one winged angel.
But anyway what I want to say is that I think Motomu Toriyama wanted FF XIII to be this generation of Final Fantasy VII but not understanding why people love(Including myself) VII in the first place.
I mean like you said XIII is very simlar to VII and because of that XIII doesn't have it's own identity.
I also want to say that. The creator of the series Hironobu Sakaguchi lost his mother during production of Final Fantasy VI. And because of that he wanted the next game(VII) in the series to have a story thats about apreciating life
    P.S
Also this maybe a predictable opinion but the victory theme from Final Fantasy VII really is my favorite in the series. It just so satisfying and I love the fact you used it in this video

Let's contrast the world building of FFXIII with that of a FF game that came BEFORE VII, namely FFVI. In the first scene of the first act, you learn that there are two factions: the Empire and the Returners. These are names that immediately convey meaning to the player. "The Empire" implies an authoritarian antagonist faction that wants to control the world by force, while "The Returners" suggests a protagonist rebel faction that is fighting the Empire's influence. Already, you know who are the good guys and who are the bad guys, who is the dominant force and who is the underdog, with no other exposition. You know the structure of the game's world, and furthermore, the events taking place early in the game (Terra being mind controlled and destroying the village of Narsche with magic, Locke coming to her rescue and introducing her to the Returners and the royal family of Figaro, Kefka trying to burn down Figaro Castle because he suspects they're Returner sympathizers, etc.) all help to construct the game's world organically.
Now look at XIII again. If you come into the game knowing nothing about it, what exactly does the word "l'Cie" suggest to you? Probably nothing. It's a completely made up term that doesn't have any implications. Same with "fal'Cie" and "Cie'th"; they don't covey anything and they all end up being explained by a lore dump that isn't included in the events of the game. You need to do research after the opening scenes to know what the hell is happening and what everything you just saw means. That opening train scene is gibberish, and the game never really recovers from it. Games don't have to be like movies, but they do need to follow SOME of the rules of visual storytelling because they're visual media. XIII doesn't do that. It also doesn't recognize the value of using familiar terms that the audience already knows and can relate to, choosing instead to create an entirely new glossary of terms that makes it even harder to get any meaning out of what you're seeing and hearing as you play it.
TL;DR - Good FF games use shorthand terms to convey info to the player and weave the story into the action. XIII does neither; it lore-dumps the player and overcomplicates its own world.

The biggest problem I have with FF13 is that it screams so many tropes and has all the typical plot twists
This confirms to me that the FF13 concept trilogy trailers is all they had.
It also adds unnecessary new language.
Kingdom hearts works because their "new" language was just Disney and English. which is just flashy and typical.
English speaking audiences don't romanticize other languages as much as Asia does.
If these projects were looked at from a North American perspective, it would have had much more of a dark souls result.

I could be wrong comment from a year ago but i understood it as vanille lying to fang about not remembering anything cause she didnt want to face her focus i think. So she just played along. Fang seemingly (unless i missed something) was the one who didnt really remember much of anything. And then when she did she confronted her about it in gran pulse
Edit: I also dont understand why she happened to be the one narrating if lightning is the mc. I actually like lightning, even really like her sometimes, but vanille narrating in theory builds a sort of connection to her character that doesnt happen with lightning, this connection is even more unique considering the game doesnt really ever focus on one particular character for too long if im not mistaken. It also doesnt help tht vanille has more of a connection to the central conflict. While lightning doesnt at least not as much. That would be like cloud and his whole deal with sephiroth but for some reason barret for example is the mc instead. I just dont understand it.

I hated Lightning for most of the first game, but she grew on me by the end of it.
....And then the sequels happened, and annihilated her character development and literally everything you did in the first game. What a waste of time. Her story makes absolutely _no_ sense; she just became a god because...reasons? You can't relate to a character like that. No one knows how it feels to go through something like that. And yeah, her obvious lack of a proper backstory didn't help anything. I don't know where people get the idea that "she was once kindhearted" when _nothing_ implies that at any point in the story. Not to mention, she always sounds incredibly reluctant to do _anything_ , and just seems to do them because she has nothing else to do.
I liked her in the first game, eventually, because she was strong and independent; didn't take anyone's shit; was a skilled fighter; knew what she wanted and went for it; and she actually did seem to grow over time -- it was worth her 20 hours of endless whining and misplaced anger to see that happen _(though I honestly haven't played the game in several years because Lightning, and fucking Hope, finally got under my skin enough from those 20 hours)_ . But, with the sequels, she went from doing what _she_ wanted to doing what others wanted her to do. Her original mindset was "I control my fate!", only to go to "Oh. Well, this is what I've been told and made to do, so this is what I will do."
What the fuck happened to her between XIII and XIII-2? She completely lost all sense of her original self to become some brainless, unemotional, puppet of higher beings and willingly doing their bidding. Not to mention, yeah, I did notice the blatant similarities to VII after some time -- and the Lightning/Caius dynamic is _clearly_ an attempt to recreate Cloud/Sephiroth. I don't like it.
You literally pointed out everything I didn't like about her in the first game though: bitchy, mean to her only remaining family and then feeling justified in taking that anger out on others... Though Vanille is the cause of most of the events, and the whole reason there is even a story... Lightning was responsible for her own problems and then saw fit to blame the world for them? No. Fuck that.
Aside from Lightning, the first game was just fine. They should have left it alone.

I know a visual novel (Grisaia) that pulled the "black box of a protagonist with an unknown past" card and only revealed bits and pieces about him here and there. And he also had a story arc where he would eventually rebel and "fight against fate" so to say. The problem is, the visual novel's common route's hilarious hijinks barely hide that at the end of it the reader still knows almost nothing about the MC. He's an edgy snarky ex-child soldier and survivor of abuse who still has ties to some shady paramilitary organisation. But apart from that, he's an overpowered husk with no charisma beyond "being cool" in the eyes of the other characters. So, to get back to Lightning, I see how she can grow on ppl in the first game. In Grisaia, the MC is just kinda there and doesn't give a damn about anything until he falls in love and starts helping classmates with their problems. You can start writing a character from "strong and cool" but you still need them to strongly want something you still need the audience to cheer for them or at least find them fascinating.

    • @LoneGamerNerd
      @LoneGamerNerd 2 года назад +1

@@destroyerinazuma96 I agree. I'm not saying Lightning has no redeeming qualities; I did list a few. She just doesn't have _many_ , in my eyes, and she drove me crazy for most of the first game. I actually kind of liked her at the end though, but SE just made her loathesome by [stupidly] deciding the game should have two sequels. If you're going to continue a story, at least make the reason for such a logical one and don't utterly destroy your characters in the process. I know some fans of LR whom actually agree the third game just completely ruined them all.
But I digress. I don't think Lightning needed to fall in love or anything to be interesting. But give her a real motive. Give her a hobby. Give her a damn personality! Something! She literally uses Serah as her motive in every game _(another relationship in the trilogy that is all tell and no show)_ , we know nothing about her; not even what she enjoys doing in her free-time -- or what she _used_ to enjoy, at least; and she literally has the same monotone voice in every game and sounds bored out of her mind. It's not fun, it's not interesting, it's just repetitive and dull. If we had at least been let in on her struggles since her parents died, or her relationship with her sister, etc. -- something that might make one feel for her, she could have probably been one of my favorite FF characters. Instead, we got next to nothing -- and SE only made it worse by advertising her as a female Cloud during production. So she didn't even come off as her own character; she was like a genderbend of another, popular character.
But I'm going on too long -- sorry. It's just a shame that what could have been a well-written protagonist was, instead, a watered down and uninteresting version of one of the most beloved FF characters of all time.

Soundtrack and graphics (at that time period) are the only good things I can say about the game while everything else just falls apart and it blows my mind that this game was given sequels when it honestly didn’t deserve to get any sequels.

I doubt that very much but i honestly don’t care anymore considering it was the first time I gave up playing through an RPG cause I already lost interest in the story and didn’t like Lightning as a character (and I never will especially after how she acted in the spin off Dissidia games too)

In a similar fashion, the K anime&multimedia franchise requires one to consume all of the related materials if you want to understand what's up. It's borderline annoying that to genuinely care for characters who aren't given enough screen time, you have to read this and that manga and maybe even listen to the audio dramas or something. K has class, K has cool graphics, music, chara design. But the first K anime feels like a second if not third season of a show, something designed for ppl with lots of prior knowledge and already aware of some of the conflicts and characters' struggles. The anime can't seem to completely stand on its own feet.

I liked your video. I have been recently playing through FF games since 2020 cause although I love KH, I never played FF. I played FFXIII through gamepasss on pc and tried hard to like it but just couldnt. The point you made about it trying to be an action jrpg is the exact thing my friend and I thought. there are a lot of AOE moves like Aeroga that seem like theyd punish you for not moving your characters out of the way in an action game, but because you really have no control, a character targeted will just take the hit. Its even worse when you make someone be sentinel so they can tank a move, but someone happened to be next to them AND WONT MOVE AWAY also gets damaged as if its your fault. Itd be nice if i could set up the tank to move away from allies or make enemies face away from allies but I cant.
Also, the final nail in the coffin for me was the shield enemies before the second Barthandulus fight. It really showed me how annoying and flawed the stagger system was and how FFXIII doesnt value your time. Its not even that that enemy was hard, but it was so spongey even with it being staggered, it was insane. It was bad enough too that halfway into its staggered state it brings back its shield and you do a lot less damage and have to wait for the stagger meter to deplete so you can fill it up again
    Once again, great vid👍

I'm two years late to this video, but seeing as of how there is no one in the comments section who's compiling answers to your questions, or talking about them from the perspective of someone who's grown to like the game. (Mainly because I'm bored right now).
Full disclosure, I've not played all that much of the final fantasy series as a whole. I have the horrible horrible misfortune of playing 13-2, then 13, then 7. I've only played the first 3rd of 13-2 because I get filled with boiling anger every time Noel opens his mouth. I've not read any expanded universe material for 13 and it's sequels, just the first game itself.
I'll start with the gameplay complaint. When I actually beat the game, it was only because I was bedridden for a weak with a horribly sprang ankle and had nothing to do but play it on Xbox. I fucking HATED the combat for the entire damn thing, it was a horribly slow and painful slog of pure torture that I only endured because I liked Hope and Lightning's character dynamic. It wasn't until the boss of chapter nine, when I got all but softlocked.
After dying to what most people consider the hardest main story boss in the game about ten times, finally breaking through only to die to the auto death after 30 minutes rule. I said fuck it, and checked the wiki. See, I had made the horrible mistake of treating this like an MMO party, where you need a healer to absorb damage, since enemies have this tendency to drop three fourths of your health in one turn. It was only after reading the wiki's strategy guide on the first Bartandelous fight, that I realized "hey, the game is basically a bunch of quick time events to change party comp."
So, each boss fight in the game (except I believe the final boss), is essentially meant to be a puzzle box. There are one or two viable party compositions that can beat them, and anything else that you try will either fail, or result in pure torture. And this games, true, deepest, most fundamental failure, worse than being one hallway start to finish, worse than plot that was written on an acid trip, worse than the fact that there's only one character that is consistently liked by most players (Sazh); it's the fact that the game, NEVER, tells you how you're supposed to play it.
The way that the party is split, and class options are limited up until the start of chapter 10, means that every fight in the game up to that point, was made to be defeated with very obvious strategies, since you are forced to go with those tactics due to the limited class choices. Then, when the game finally lets you play it yourself, nearly SEVEN hours in, you're left to drown because at no point in the entire game up until now, were you actually given any fights or even pop up tutorials, that explain to you how to play the game without the game holding your hand.
Now, once I figured that out that the game was based around experimenting with strategies and party rosters in the pulse section, it became really fun. I even went back and replayed up to Pulse about a year ago, and I actually had fun with the early game. I think that the way that class changes works makes it play more like a button timing game than a strategy game outside the optional superbosses; but over all I actually had fun with it.
As for the plot, I read all the entries in both my 2017 and 2020 runs, as well as remembering how the game ends fairly well. So, basically.
The Fal'cie and humanity were created by the goddess of death, Etra. At some point for reasons the 1st game doesn't tell you, she left and the Fal'cie became obsessed with bringing her back. As she's a goddess of death, they thought they could bring her back by sacrificing humanity. So they created the utopian world of Cocoon powered by the final boss, Orphan. They then tried luring as much of humanity onto it as they could. Once they had a number they were satisfied with, they tried to sacrifice Cocoon by smashing it back down.
However, for some reason, the Fal'cie had all become part of Cocoon and as their souls were tied to it or something, they couldn't destroy it. They asked the Fal'cie on the surface to come kill them, which started the war between Cocoon and Pulse. During that war, Vanille and Fang turned into Ragnarok, but for some reason they couldn't destroy Cocoon and were petrified in Anima's castle thingy.
The war ended up wiping out all or most of humanity on pulse, and so the Fal'cie of cocoon grabbed Anima's castle thingy and brought it to Cocoon in secret. When Vanille and Fang wake up, they both lie to each other about not remembering what happened because they can't bring themselves to try to wipe out an entire civilization again, when they leave Anima, they don't lock the door behind them and so Sarah, who had no clue about Anima due to the cover up, walks in and nearly gets killed. After that the main plot happens and for some, unknown reason. Despite doing exactly what they are supposed to to defeat Orphan, and without having any plan to stop ragnarok after they do so, Vanille and Fang use the power of love? to turn into a giant glass pillar and stop Cocoon from falling.
I, someone who actually enjoyed the micro-level story enough to read something, still have no idea how the ending works lol. And it's not like the sequels made it any better from my understanding.
As for lightning, yeah she's a bitch. I think her hatred of Snow is entirely her projecting her own flaws onto him. The person who does all talk and doesn't follow it up is *her*. I think her character growth should have been more obvious in the first half as it's not until chapter eleven that she starts seriously opening up. (And with bartandelous being such a run killer in a game that's barely holding on to your attention for the two days it will take to get there, I absolutely see it being too little too late for many people.)
As for a few minor things I really like about the game. Chapter Seven is where the game peaks for me, and IMO it's worth dealing with the first six chapters just to get too, but after that the game really never gets my emotional investment as high as Snow and Hope's conflict. There's so many great things going on in the sequence, like how Hope spend every cutscene in the chapter with Johnny Joestar murder eyes, or just how good Hope's attacks on Snow are, or that Hope was actually beginning to summon his Eidolon during the confrontation, but the giant mech interrupted it; exc.
In conclusion. FF 13 fucking sucks from a design aspect because of how terrible the game is at explaining both how you're supposed to play it, and in delivering its world building. But I can see what it was trying to do, and like it anyways because of it.
PS: Love the video, love your content, I got recommended from the Top 5 Ghost&Pals songs vid, and I've been watching this stuff ever since today.

I believe it's possible to copy the story of FF7, contrary to what some may think. The main issue lies in the execution. FF7's story is rather linear, focusing on the goal of saving the planet, it's easy to understand. The game effectively conveys a sense of hopelessness and the presence of an all-powerful evil organization, especially through the atmosphere of Midgar and the Og soundtrack. It was simple. And it felt great finally being away from that all-powerful city named Midgar.
FFX to an extent copied FF7. So it is possible to replicate FF7's story. It copied its more psychological elements Yuna and Aerith sharing similar goals, Aerith praying for Gaia's safety, and Yuna going on a pilgrimage to stop the destruction of her own world as is tradition like an Ancient. The Ancients and Summoners overlap sometimes. How both games handle the dead is almost one v one with the Lifestream and Farplane being very similar. They also share a character named Shinra. If I'm not mistaken the director of FFX mentioned something along the lines of both worlds being connected, so there's that. I can see that with Yunalesca and Jenova. I wouldn't be surprised if they were the same character, and were just hunting down the last remnants of the Summoners being the Ancients after they leave Spira when Sin shows back up (we don't have to talk about the X-2.5 novel) There are also the names though very minor: Sephiroth and Jenova and the religion in Spira. Very minor but both games do use religion as a base. Both games also have the brunette/raven-haired girl fall in love with the blonde guy with blue eyes, or at least teased. Aerith/Tifa/Jessie with Cloud, reverse case with Zack and Aerith, being a raven-haired guy falling in love with the brunette-haired girl. Yuna with Tidus, Yuna with Gippal, and Lenne with Shuyin.
FF13 does share traits with FF7. But the themes are different and that's what makes the games different. FF7 is "Saving the Planet" "Stop Evil Organization" "Don't Forget Your Honor" (with Crisis Core. It's not a bad theme for FF7 *shrugs*) FF13 is "Defy Fate" "Face Your Fate" "Don't Lose Hope" the problem with Defy Fate and Face Your Fate is it doesn't mix well...and could get really confusing if your world isn't properly explained in whatever context you're trying to use that theme for. And it really doesn't do that well. By FF13-2...........Lightning is given a new FATE as the warrior for the goddess or something and she accepts it without a fight. And Sarah HAS to accept her FATE too. There is no out. She will see the future regardless of how she feels😭And Noel trying to stop FATE from him killing his once mentor Caius also does not end well.
The director of 13 did not know what he wanted to do😭😭

FF13 Dull and unisnpired, but nice graphics.

FF13-3 LR WTF? Why is there a thrid game? Jesus LOL
And the worst are the fanboys which are delusional AF and in denial, worst games I have ever played, only played them for a couple of hours but didn't even like them
Turn to XV instead and Im enjoying it more LOL.
Lightning is hot but terrible protagonist, boring an dull, always angry, sasuke wannabe.

It's not just a story that's trash. The game play is linear. The difference between final fantasy ten and this. Final fantasy ten was actually fun. Blitz ball. Plus in final fantasy ten I was never limited. The characters are not fun to get into.

Personally:I think final fantasy 7 is the most overrated jrpg of all time and the most overrated final fantasy ever.
I also think Sh2 is also overrated. While its great game, it isn't as scary as SH1 or 3.Sure it has the best story of the bunch thats the saddest characters, but SH3 is great too.
FF7 is what happens when a game likes smelling its own farts too much and things it smells only roses, and ends up with sappy melodramatic diabeetus that should be thrown in the garbage. No really FF7 starts out with a asshole character who is EMO and then eventually becomes more self confident then in the movie becomes EMO again.
I am so sick of it, and just want to move on to another type of trope character.I welcome the characters of FFXV if it means moving past the stupid emo character trop with bad melodrama and bad writing.

The only thing i dislike about the video is you don't talk about any of the actually issues of the game i.e.(no in game gil economy, no level system but enemies have levels, you cannot get maxed skills unless you complete the game, it has no hubs to travel so it a long corridor, when main char dies its a party wipe but when other party dies its not a wipe.) those things are a real factor to this games down fall the story to most people can be looked past as long as the other areas are actually developed good. Story can be expanded in side content.

    • @WeebaLu
      @WeebaLu  3 года назад

I probably should have, but I didn't see too much of an issue with the leveling up part. The long corridors I really should have mentioned, but they technically don't last very long as then you're put into a more open experience later on. I guess I could boil all those issues you mention as Square trying to desperately cling to old Final Fantasy 1-9 mechanics while also trying to create more fantastical and high-octane action gameplay that honestly requires Kingdom Hearts-esque fighting.

@@LoneGamerNerd same goes for many other games. Most games don't even have teleportation and yet they're still amazing. My point is that there's literally nothing wrong with the game play or the story. And final fantasy xiii isn't the only game that has its own flaws. It wasn't designed to be the best either. They just try to make it as good as possible while they were creating it. Instead of huffing and puffing while playing the game why not just try and relax and enjoy the experience? Instead of thinking about all the possible flaws and squeezing your brains just to find the irrelevant flaws she just mentioned. It's stupid. If you don't like a game that's up to you. Nobody forced you to play it either. So I don't get what's even your problem here. So what if you can only teleport in gran pulse? What would be the point of going back all the way to the beginning anyway? You'll just meet up with weak enemies that won't do shit to your CP anyways.

    • @LoneGamerNerd
      @LoneGamerNerd 2 года назад

@@pastelghost9978 I actually enjoyed the first XIII game. It was the sequels I hate(d). But you say there's nothing wrong with the story or gameplay, and then follow it up directly with "Final Fantasy XIII isn't the only game that has its own flaws" -- a rather contradictory argument. You can't have it both ways. Every game has flaws, yes, even my personal favorite FF game does -- but I love it anyway.
I understand why teleportation was utilized for Gran Pulse: it's such a massive area that running around every time you had to get somewhere would take up a ridiculous amount of time that people really _would_ turn off the game. I suppose it was to compensate for lack of an airship -- but that doesn't take away from the fact that Gran Pulse is literally the only part of the game that's open world. And the reason that's such a complaint is that FF has thrived on the open world concept since FF1. Yes, I was never fond of returning to previous areas anyway because EXP was not worth it by then. But you do realize that was never the reason people liked going back, right? It was usually for items, exploration, weapon upgrades, or simply just because you liked that area in the game. Going back for EXP late in the game would be a rather stupid and pointless logic -- and anyone whom has told you "I went back to garner more EXP" is either lying, or an idiot because that would have been the worst thing to do if they wanted to make their party stronger.
Anyway, I digress. For the record: I don't know why you're getting defensive with _me_ . All I did was elaborate on the original comment. I'm not the one whom actually complained about the teleportation aspect -- that was the OP.

No. The story basically shows us that Snow annoyed her and she was mean to her sister....and that's why she's so angry. Basically, we learn nothing about her other than her parents died. But we're supposed to believe she's struggling when we know nothing about her past except the 13 days before the game's events. And this is supposed to delve deep enough into her character to make her sympathetic...

@@eddieboston6540 I love how the argument is always that "you must not have played". No. I've played the game more times than I can count and I actually still come back to it now and then because I do enjoy XIII -- the downside of that is having to deal with Lightning and Hope bitching about the same stuff for 10 hours straight, at least. It gets annoying.
She hardly has a backstory; 13 days is not a backstory -- it's a time-skip. She's mad at herself for how she treated Serah and feels justified in taking it out on the world. It's bullshit. I understand she became a l'Cie, but so did 5 other people and they didn't go around yelling at everyone else. Except Hope -- but Hope is one of the most annoying FF characters ever.
I play XIII because I like the battle system, the music, the visuals, and some of the characters. But Lightning and Hope are two of the worst aspects of the game for me and I can only roll my eyes when they're on screen. Is it worth it? Yes, because the ending actually made Lightning tolerable.
....Until the developers decided to create two pointless sequels that just hit the reset button on her both times and completely destroyed her as a character.
