Jumonji no Ryu (Kensosuke Yorozuya), a wandering samurai with a branded mark on his chest, was once a loyal samurai of the Kuroda clan who burned with the ideals of overthrowing the Shogunate and restoring the Emperor's power. One night, he was accused of stealing a large sum of money and was betrayed by his comrades. He was also framed for murdering his own father. Ryu was then hunted down by the Shogunate's official, Fujita Naoto (Go Wakabayashi), and his former teacher, Fuyuki Goemon (Kensosuke Yorozuya). In order to clear his name and seek revenge against the true culprits, Ryu assumes the identity of ""Jumonji no Ryu,"" a nameless wanderer, and sets out on a journey to pursue Kanou Kizaburo (Kenji Imai), the mastermind behind the plot who branded Ryu with the Jumonji mark.
Based on the novel of the same name by Jiro Ikushima, this drama series aired on NET TV (now TV Asahi) in 1972 for a total of 26 episodes. Starring the talented actor Kennosuke Yorozuya, who had previously shown his skills in various period films such as ""Mabuta no Haha,"" ""Seki no Yatappe,"" and ""Kutsukake Tokijiro: Yoyo ichi-hiki,"" the show follows the tragic hero and is sure to captivate audiences with its compelling storyline. Viewers are sure to be drawn into the drama and root for the protagonist as the story unfolds.

When this series first came out, I thought it was right after Lone Wolf had finished. But Kinnnosuke here looks so much younger in here than he was in Lone Wolf.
Lone Wolf was a great hit, but I liked this series just as much. He’s a great actor.
This Series came out long before Lone Wolf and Cub. I saw it without English Subtitles. The Story is so good, you can follow it without Subtitles. The only annoying thing about this Series, is there is a build up between the Hero, Ryu and some of the Samurai pursuing him. These climatic battles are a little disappointing as I remember. Also, Ryu's Sidekick is killed in the 25th episode. The Sidekick is annoying at first, but he kind of grows on you as the Series progresses. The 26th episode without Subtitles doesn't make any sense. I hope RUclips plays the entire series. It will be interesting to know what the final episode was all about.

Jerry Fujio does a good job being such a nuisance 😂. I think he’s one of very few American and Japanese half actors who became so successful in Jidaigeki.
