Maybe you should get Rob a mini fridge for his Stinkekäse and his Rollmops.
Rollmops shouldn't require refrigeration ... if you insist keeping it for many months, maybe!

The problem with the shopping carts to my mind is not the danger that they were stolen (except a little number perhaps) but that in bigger cities some people will take the carts with them right before their appartement building so that they avoid to carry havy bags. Some supermarkts equip their carts with a magnetic brake which blocks the wheels if you try to leave their area. At this the magnetic system is buried below ground level.
Concerning coins for Grocery carts in Supermarkets: Volksbank or Sparkasse and some other banks may give out chips that you can attach to your keys to use for grocery carts. Maybe you can just ask the bank tellers or other employees at the counter in a friendly way once you will be at the bank the next time.
If you ask an employee at the grocery store you might get a chip as well. I got mine from Edeka. Or they might offer to change you money.
in the UK we rarely use long life milk ...We prefer fresh refrigerated milk and i think eggs are unrefrigerated everywhere in Europe and not just in Germany
When I first came to Germany from the UK, many years ago, I wondered why everyone used longlife milk. I noticed that they didn't really use much milk. They put evaporated milk in coffee, only drank infusions, never tea, or only very rarely "black tea", and then without milk. Cereal for breakfast wasn't a thing, they only ate bread, rolls, or, on Sundays, cake. So longlife milk was used, if at all, because it kept better. Most families would only get through about a litre a week.
Also, it was considerably cheaper than fresh milk. Still is.
Thanks for the video - just two thoughts from a German on some struggles: aspargus can be frozen very easily when fresh - just buy it in season and you can have it all year round (also works for Pfifferlinge...). Second is the coin for the shopping cart: You can always ask to change a bill in the supermarket.

After collecting grocery baskets for a month 2 yrs ago at a major Southern California , I saw sense in the coin deposit system to use a shopping carts. We do have Aldi's throughout California , but the major chains Kroger ( Ralph's and Food 4 Less in so Cal) a, Vons , Pavilions, Whole Foods, Stater Bros, etc all don't have this system.
Depending on where a person is in the US, alcohol can be sold in supermarkets and chain drug stores/ Pharmacies like CVS , Walgreens , Rite Aid ( the 3 major chains) and or state run ABC stores. ABC stores are common in the South and Midwest , not so much on the coasts. Small mom and pop liquor stores and gas station convenience stores also sell alcohol. The existence of ABC stores ( some of which are Drive thru , especially those that specifically sell frozen adult beverages in Louisiana, particularly throughout Nee Orleans and they're not just open for Mardi Gras but all yr long), does have some ties conservative religious beliefs , especially in the South aka The Bible Belt, but also historically, the temperance moment in the early 20th century hand in hamd with religious beliefs have alot to do with regulations on the sales of alcohol in some states are to this day.
Pro tip: you can open a German shopping cart with any coin, even one Cent. Takes a certain technique, but I did it successfully many times. Put it in, press down and against the side of the lock, keep up the pressure while slowly closing it. Might take a couple of tries, but it works very well. Alternatively just get a key chain with a shopping cart chip.

Quark *is* indeed cream cheese - originally without cream/fat. You can also get a variety with 20 % fat added.
Milk absorbs bad smells from the fridge very efficiently. Just put a small cup in the fridge or leave the milk carton open over night, when you're about to finish it. It doesn't need much, but it works like magic.
You can buy a keychain with a coin replacement to unlock the shopping cart. Sometimes you get such keychain as a promotal gift.
Some stores, when you ask them to break 5 euro for change to use in the cart they give you a plastic chip for the cart instead (often with their logo and color scheme). You often see these chips in a wallet or in a change holder in a car.
You even may have nostalgia towards them, mine is from a store chain that doesn't exist anymore, the shopping center it was in was even torn down and replaced with other buildings by now.
I live in the countryside of germany and at most stores here, the carts don't need chips but in the nearest city they do.
I lived in Germany for 10 years and they are definitely ahead of Australia and New Zealand in many ways. In Australia we finally now, over the last few years, have to bring our own shopping bags, we finally have container stations to bring our recycable bottles and get some money for it, Aldi shops you need a coin or token for the trolley. I leave a coin in my car for the aldi shops. I agree, I couldn't eat the rollmops either when I lived there and am not a big processed meat eater either so never got into it there either. I do remember my cousins children in Germany would love to eat at times the shokokusse squashed in a bun. Lecker! Happy we get more and more German foods in Australia now though too as I do like sauerkraut and knoppers.
Tupper ware solves the „stinky“ problem for me. A run through the dish washer and the smell is gone.

In many supermarkets like Kaufland you can buy the chip for your shopping cart for around 50 cents. They give you a small snap hook that you can attach to your key chain. That way you never forget the chip.

I find the sachets of baking powder most inconvenient. I usually only need half and always have a collection of half-used sachets leaking all over the drawer.
Put the left over powder in the washing mashine while you wash the White clothes or use the hot programm
We get 10 cents per bottle here in Newcastle Oz.Most trollies are nit locked except for Aldi.
Quark kann man auch herzhaft genießen. Z.B. Pellkartoffeln mit Quark. Hier können Zwiebeln oder/und Kräuter rein.
Leider wird mir von haltbare Milch immer schlecht und darum bevorzuge ich Frischmilch.
Saure Heringe ist auch nicht mein Ding, aber Sahnehering mit Pellkartoffeln ist richtig lecker
Ach ja, ich liebe Käse und Stinkekäse wie der hier gezeigte Harzer oder auch Handkäs genannt und Limbuger finde ich sehr lecker. Nun ja, der Geruch ist gewöhnungsbedürftig!

If you don't have a coin, use a house key with a round head. Then insert the head into the slot provided for the coin. When you turn it off, simply pull the key out again.
you should try " maggi " i think thats pretty much a german thing you can eat it with a boiled egg just dont put too much on it a few drops is enough. but you gonna hate it or love it i can tell 😂

I have to step in for jared asparagus though. We live in a famous asparagus region, the Lüneburger Heide. My mother-in-law is obsessed with asparagus and buys it in 5-kg-packs within the season. What she and her husband can't eat within a week, she preserves in jars. There is a special soup here, called "Hochzeitssuppe", wedding soup, which mostly consits of beef broth, small meat balls, "Eierstich" and jared asparagus. It tastes surprisingly good!
And jared asparagus also has to go into every "Hühnerfrikassee".

Translates ti stink cheese with onions in bvegetable oil with vinegar. The chese must rest for minimum 2 days in warm environment.

4:00 the intention of the deposit isn't really so the cars won't get stolen - I mean, if you do want to steal one, they are worth considerably more than 50 cents or a Euro, so that deposit wouldn't really deter you - even if you couldn't avoid it. No, the real intention is to make people return the carts to where they are lined up, as opposed to leaving them right next to their cars when they drive off.
That said, at least in my area of Germany, you will find more and more shops where you won't have to put in deposit any more, or where the carts are not locked even though there is no coin or anything else in them. Not sure why exactly that is. Maybe because the number of people paying cashless has been increasing as of late.

4:10 probably cause the majority in germany still uses coins rather than card, so it's assumed people always have atleast one 50c or 1€ coin with them to use the carts. Also there are those sort of plastic coins some supermarkets give out which you can use instead of a coin.

In South Australia, we can return our plastic bottles to a recycling depot and get money for them. We only get 10 cents per bottle. It’s been like this for twenty years 🙁 I thought it should increase to at least 20 cents, because of inflation.
Aldi is the only supermarket we need to pay, to use a shopping trolley. We can use a $1 or $2 coin, or we can buy a special token from Aldi for $1. We usually keep this in the console in the car in case we need it. In South Australia, we cannot buy alcohol from a supermarket. Recently I went over the border into Victoria, and I was shocked to see that alcohol was being sold in Aldi 😮 The laws must be different in different states of Australia.
I don’t mind rollmops, but I have to eat them with something else such as potatoes or cream to take away that really sour flavour. I couldn’t eat them on their own. Something similar to rollmops was eaten in Norway and Scandinavia too. I sometimes buy some other flavours of rollmops from Ikea. Recently I have bought pickled herring in mustard sauce. I put it in a wrap with avocado, and it was yummy 😋
Strangely enough, my husband, who is Asian, just loves rollmops. It reminds him of some Asian flavours he grew up with.
Long life milk is reasonably popular in Australia too, although we mainly have it as a backup. When we buy eggs from the supermarket, they are not in the fridge, but when we get home, we put them in the fridge 🤔

Hallo Antoinnette, ich bin Deutsche und bin mit all diesen Produkten groß geworden. Was ich aber nicht mag, ist Fleischsalat. Sonst esse ich diese Lebensmittel regelmäßig. Auch mit Blutwurst bin ich aufgewachsen, sie ist sehr lecker. Über den Namen hab ich mir erst als Erwachsene Gedanken gemacht. Liebe Grüße aus Düsseldorf.

you cant just only use the deposit in that supermarket, you can get your cash back at the cashier if youd like so.
You can put the "stinky cheese" on Pizza and bake it which will make it loose it's stinkyness as well as let it loose its strong taste, plus it is low fat as far as I know.

Great video again Antoinette!! I'm a dutchie living 5 minutes from the german border so basically I do all my groceries over the border (saves soooo much). So indeed everyrhing in this video is quite normal to me too😊. There's only one thing in Germany that is truly in my top 10 favourite foods and I never seen anyone on youtube mention it: the white cold pasta salad you get at every German barbeque (at least in NRW)!!! Do you know this too?

I actually loved the Dutch supermarkets, especially all the delicious, fresh ready-made meals you can get. Yes, it's not a German BBQ without cold pasta salad. Unfortunately, I can't eat it due to gluten intolerance (celiac) but I try to make my own GF version🙂

New Zealand doesn't call it something else? For the US, we call it Farmer Cheese. It's still rare to get it, but you can find it.
I don't know if Germany does this, but in Switzerland, Coop has a promotional coin that will fit into the slot for the carts. It has a clip on it so you can clip it to your bag. For when I went shopping in Germany (we lived in Basel) my husband 3D printed a coin that will fit in the slot. He punched a hole in the top so I could hang it with the Coop coin. He scanned the coin to his computer and then sent it to the 3D printer. Now we are in the US He 3D printed a coin to fit in the carts at Aldi. Again he scanned a quarter and then sent it to the printer from his computer. He does these things as a tiny Christmas present for friends 😂.
The real reason the US washes their eggs is to cut down on the food born illness Salmonella. The USDA claims Salmonella can penetrate the egg and make the consumer sick. This is a huge argument with farmers. One farmer in the US did a study where he washed his 40 eggs and 40 eggs where he didn't wash them. He cracked the unwashed eggs had less Salmonella in it than the washed eggs. You still can get unwashed eggs in the US, but you have to go directly to a farm. Farmers even aren't allowed to sell unwashed eggs at the Farmers Market.

Just make it a habit to take your empty bottles with you whenever you go shopping. Just like you do with your wallet and keys. Result: no piles of empties!

Next time when you accidently forgot to take some coins with you to the grocery shop, please just ask someone and don't go home unnecessarily!!!! Many people have lots of these plastic coins in their car (I have countless) and wouldn't mind to give you one or even donate ridiculous 50 cents to you. I mean I wouldn't (mind)!!!!! You can ask the cashier from the other side of the desk as well to change some money for you.
