    Dena's videos are always inspiring! I've been in America for a year struggling with conversations with native speakers, tho people say I have beautiful American accent and speak nearly native, I still couldn't say everything right away in English and somehow always ended up not knowing what to talk cuz' I'm too afraid to make a conversation boring, so PLZ PLZ PLZ Dena make more videos about conversation topics, how to continue a conversation and how to chat with native speakers so they'll be interested in you! I really need it.

    I had almost the same background. Going to a bilingual school at an early young age definitely helps building the fundamentals. But bilingual schools with local Taiwanese classmates has limits. I was into western movies and sports at the time and that definitely motivated me to keep building the environment I need to improve my English.
    But still, I have to say. Dena is at a completely different and higher level. I can understand any given English well, listening or reading, because I read a lot and watched a lot of RUclips also. But in terms of speaking, I couldn't be as smooth as Dena. People might say I have sort of an American accent but I honestly still have that Taiwanese accent and sometimes struggle to pronounce some words especially when I am speaking fast.
    Anyway, thank you for sharing your experience, Dena!

      Yun Chiu

      There’s no such thing as a “native accent”. Everyone has an accent, even for people who are born and raised in the States. People from the South would have Southern accent and such. That’s why Dena specifically mentioned for more than one time that she learned “American accent”.

在1:04 Dena 說她study music at Berkeley .但是加州大學柏克萊分校UC Berkeley 不是走流行音樂的,dena 自我介紹處也有說她study at Berklee college of music.

    So I'm 17 now and I grew up bilingual (Swiss-German/Mandarin) and I started learning English when I was 13. I really hated it because my teacher was so annoying and I didn't like her accent at all. Then I started watching youtube videos in English, because I wanted to learn something about gymnastics. So I started watching hours and hours of English videos. Then when I was 15 I went to Taiwan to improve my Chinese, but I ended up learning English. Everyone there spoke English and my Chinese was way better that their's so I couldn't speak to them in Chinese. I had never spoken English before that so I was forced to speak it. But since I always and only listened to native speakers my accent was quite good. At the end of those 3 weeks I could talk perfectly fine in English.
    Fast forward to this summer: Out school gave us the chance to take an official Cambridge exam, if you're not familiar with this system, there are 6 levels, from A1 to C2, where A1 is for beginners and C2 is proficient. I took the C1 exam and passed, if I'd only had 4 points more I would've got the C2 certificate, which is the highest. But I'm very happy with the result :)
    So what I wanted to tell you with this really long commen is: Don't give up, you can do it! Just do what you enjoy in English, you can also buy your favorite book in English😉

    I thinking the final couple minutes are so important and should to be highlighted! :) accents are good and it is the contents that are more essential in any conversation. Don’t get trapped in the obsession of accents but forget about expanding one’s mind and the potential of being articulate. :) x

    I have exactly the same experiences as you( My parents started a cram school themselves, me seeking online resources and pursuing western entertainers, etc) which is also why I tend to get a lot of reactions for my English speaking from both native and non native speakers, since I’ve spoken English the way I do my whole life. Still, intonations and certain New England accent are something really tricky to master because of some sorta oral structure between Asians and Caucasians. It’s very subtle but you can hear the differences. You do have a perfect American accent though so kudos!
    P.S. you look just like Ali Wong in this video, with the glasses and attitude lol

  • @forlifelamb110
    @forlifelamb110 5 лет назад +13

    口音大概就是靠不斷模仿練習和自言自語(我看我哥成功案例XD)(不過我自己沒有很成功😂)
    想知道小技巧!!因為有些發音有點難,不知道是不是母語語系因素🤔 例如word.world....
    不過我覺得口音就是能溝通最重要哈哈哈哈 之前交換遇到非洲同學 簡直燒盡大腦細胞XDD
    (不過第一名困難辨別還是印度口音哈哈哈哈哈)
    也想問dena 在交談時(尤其是那種無法停下來的對話進行式XD)
    如果要講一個比較複雜句子(就是不生活化用語),要怎麼訓練跳脫中文思考模式~?
    我通常都是在腦袋裡先中翻英😢 但一來英文語句邏輯不太對,二來對方可能覺得我定格斷線了哈哈哈
    所以常常變成用重點單字組成一個不連貫的句子😂(幸好遇到的人都是母語者,很會猜意思XD)

    • @HeyItsDena
      @HeyItsDena  5 лет назад +7

      哈哈哈你哥哥怎麼這麼認真很棒耶!!!
      我以前也會很卡world 跟 girl ~ 我很像就一直練習一直副頌好多遍!
      hmmm我覺得要跳脫中文翻譯思考模式在多聽多朗讀後應該會有幫助(建立語感)! 然後學新的字也盡量查英英的!
      然後我完全懂你定格斷線的感覺哈哈哈我有時候要敘述很難講的事情的時候我講英文就會講得特~~別的慢哈哈哈
      你可以試試看不要直接斷掉,把你講話速度變慢拖時間來思考怎麼說或許會比較自然(?)
      btw你敘述的方式真的很好笑很有畫面xP

    My tips is watch your every video which is full Eng. Watch twice, one with captions and one with not. Sometime tune down the speed a little bit while I can’t hear well of you.
    And, comment more often by using ENG

    Hi Dena! Recently I'm struggling with teaching an English starter (already an adult)...Do you have any advice? I mean like...should I teach my friend in a normal way, or should I teach him in different ways?(ex: combine learning English with his hobbies)

    • @HeyItsDena
      @HeyItsDena  4 года назад

      it depends on what he's building from. If he's a complete beginner, he'll have to start with phonics! however, if he's okay with that or he can read and comprehend a little bit, i'd suggest combining his hobbies! find materials regarding to what he likes! I find it more interesting when it comes to memorizing vocabularies and grammar rules from an article i like!
