"Every word is getting longer, the mosquitoes are getting louder."
I really like that line in particular.
If there's anything more to love its the fact that it matches the motif of the scene. The song track starts slowing down and becomes distorted near the end. A+ effing direction on this scene.
yo you play celeste?
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN
@@user-dn6cf7kx8u Somewhat referencing the effects of Chronos withdrawal. Things start slowing down until time feels like it's completely stopped for it's user. And they become stuck in their mind, with time never moving again for them.
This is the hell that many veterans face literally every day. My grandfather would often recite how he for one minute on his ship was at peace, and the next he was ordered to pick up the corpses of his friends that were killed from a remote bomb.

This whole game is a masterpiece in artistic expression, extremely satisfying gameplay, and storytelling. It takes science fiction concepts and makes them feel human and tangible, and fills it with emotion. What an amazing game
Their other two games, Pause Ahead and especially Tower of Heaven, are also great for this sort of gameplay narrative harmony. They’re free flash games, check them out
true.
That ending tho
exactly why this is now my favorite game in terms of storytelling
If each week felt like a year and Zero was in the jungle for “28 years”, then the Gamma NULL soldiers were only in the jungle for a little over 6 months
Guildmaster I don’t think it was talking about specifically the way time feels, I think it was a metaphor for the time slowing that occurs during chronos withdrawl
That would only be true if the symptoms of withdrawal were constant, but clearly it progresses as more time without it is spent.
I believe this is fundamentally correct - that Zero served for about half a year in the Cromag Wars when he was 15, but the NULL program was retired due to public outcry over child killings such as were carried out by Zero and Fifteen, and also due to the brain damage and eventualy fatality to Chronos users. By the time Zero is 22 years old, he has experienced 368 weeks as 368 years, so his consciousness has become super old, sharply contrasting his youthful exterior. From his point of view, he has been an addict for centuries who remains traumatized by things he was made to do as a teenager. He was always aggressive and psychotic, but his government used these traits to weaponize him and then made him an addict in their service.
It appears that Zero ended up in the government's black ops employ, while Headhunter ended up dependent on Omar Al-Qasim for Chronos, and so lived a similar lifestyle of killing somebody else's enemies for her fix. Fifteen seems to have another means of acquiring Chronos, knows the most about what happened to them, and is the most actively working against the New Mecca government. Furthermore, he appears to be the only surviving Gamma NULL other than Zero, and therefore the only one that would have stood a chance against him. Headhunter is definitely the most fun bossfight in the game, but she is outclassed by Zero.
"When the drug runs out, time stops, and your stuck in the jungle forever."

It's been 3 years, but it feels like 156 years.

well said
"Every word is getting longer, the mosquitos are getting louder."
This is a good line in itself but it also reflects in the music. As the song goes on the tempo slows as if time was slowing down and the synth with the vibrato, vibrating like the buzzing of mosquitos, starts off very soft and becomes overpowering by the end. Beautiful characterization.
we need more games like this. something that tells a real story, better than any book or movie could
PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THIS MEAN
@@user-dn6cf7kx8uthe music metaphorically sounds like that line
'when the drug runs out, time stops and your stuck in the jungle forever' that line always sticks with me
Chronos is one hell of a drug
The line is odd, because you’d think with no context that it’s meant to be metaphorical, but it’s actually very literal.
@@mr.cup6yearsago211 What I find most complex about it is that Zero is only half-correct. He is in denial about his PTSD, and blames his symptoms entirely on the Chronos withdrawal, but other people probably experience the withdrawal differently. Zero's mind always goes back to the trauma of being made to kill families and children, and burn their homes, and this much is an obvious symptom of PTSD. It's made exponentially worse because his Chronos addiction means he will never really die, just rewinding time until there is no Chronos left in his blood, at which point he'll be stuck in his last moments. Given his damaged mental state, it is reasonably likely that being in the jungle forever is what waits at the end of his life.
Amazing scene, almost cried. Such a wonderful game.

@@thedingo5797 you cried cus of music. Not because the character. It just walking. Thats a fake emotional feeling that caused by music
Cant help but feel the story will eventually come back to that church
Me too! It feels like the creator of the game wouldn’t have made such a beautiful scene with no meaning and a bunch of vague text
The Cromags are a very obvious allegory for the Vietnamese and the church reminds me of the French colonial era churches built across Vietnam pre-revolution. As someone who would've grown up in a vat and trained in a meat packing facility being deployed and seeing something like that would've made a massive impression on him. Its incredibly upsetting to me how zero is practically just a child like when he picks up the leviathan toy and inspects it before looking around and sneaking it into his cloak, keeping it for years after. The psychiatrist says he was selected for psychopathy but despite his upbringing and training he's more emotional than many of the soldiers who were regular people before going to going to do what they did in prisons like Abu Ghraib and the Israeli prisons in the Negev desert.
This scene kinda made the game for me. Truly one of the greatest video game scenes I’ve seen in a long time

Just a giant internal freak out. Immediately subsided by Chronos.
God I can't wait for DLC. Or a sequel.
Free dlc is coming out and it’s 3x the original planned size
@@chi6423 I honestly wish it wasn't free, the creator deserves so much more money for the effort put into the game. I feel like I'm ripping him off.
@@Happymonday2015 honestly I feel like I ripped off the creator considering how cheap the game is
That and a free dlc is like, insanely generous
I think this is headhunter talking, because they were going through Chronos withdrawal already, and they pleaded Zero to go after the people who created NULL. This is Zero’s vision of that. But that’s just what I think.
@@thegrapethief5514 i agree i think this is the headhunter too cause at the end it says "i need to ask you a favor" and at the end of the fight with her she begs zero to kill the people who made them this way. either that or it's fifteen talking as the text later shows up when he arrives and says he's the dragon
Might be my absolutely favourite scene from a game in a long time. Something about it, something indescriptible makes it so.. emotional? Melancolic? Time is weird.
Playing this game is like tripping without drugs.
Trippin on chronos
I think after this game I don't want to ever use drugs
This withdrawal sequence is probably my favorite scene in the game. Ive spent a long time thinking about and analyzing the cathedral part. Its really interesting because contrary to what people think, it doesn’t seem to be Zero thats speaking
At the end of the game, you get a dossier at the psychiatrist’s desk that shows Zero is only 22 years old. The dialogue says “28 years in that god forsaken jungle.” It’s a null soldier thats way older speaking.
I saw a comment pointing out that the font used in the dialogue is only ever used again when Fifteen appears to kill V, so its very likely that the cathedral scene is an event thats going to happen way in the future where Fifteen is speaking to Zero. Fifteen’s age is unknown so its safe to assume that he was likely in the war for longer than Zero was.
My theory is that it’s possibly a monologue before a boss fight against Fifteen or something? I’m not entirely sure what favor Fifteen is asking of Zero, but given how Chronos is nearly eliminated, the line “I know what comes next” implies Fifteen knows his death to withdrawal is near. I think that Fifteen is asking Zero to kill him out of mercy, before he dies slowly to withdrawal. Thats my take on the scene anyways, given how little context we have.
Holy shit
For all we know, it might even be some insane vision of what Headhunter and Fifteen said to each other. Given the crazy leaps in time and nutty hallucinations that this game has (Hell, one of the best examples comes right after this, where he’s begging on the streets), this might be the conversation Fifteen is having with Headhunter. Do I think this is true? No, probably not. Yours is probably closer to the truth, but it’s worth musing on nonetheless.
It’s also possible that this is something he was told by a fellow NULL during the war or just at some point before his amnesia got bad. Maybe they were injured and asked for him to let them die instead of letting the withdrawal take them. Maybe the favor he’s being asked to do has something to do with his visions of the girl? Maybe Zero is talking about just how long it felt like he was in there because of the drug. Who knows? This game is amazing and one of the best things is that it’s almost endlessly interpretable. That is, until the DLC releases, which may clear up some questions.
I think 28 years was more so what It felt like to Zero because of Chronos slowing down perception of time, which the main thing this monologue is talking about
I was also confused by the fact that Zero said that he was a participant in the war, but they don't believe him because he is too young. This is also a paradox. And I think it's not that Zero looks young (and if so, there must be other reasons for this besides good heredity and a healthy lifestyle)
@@user-gq7eq3vr6jwerent zero and fifteen child soldiers?
The entire withdrawal sequence was what cemented this game in my mind as a storytelling masterpiece. It breaks so many expectations and is a perfect example of storytelling that can only work in the medium of video games, using a short snippet of gameplay in the middle of what would otherwise just be a cutscene to disorient you even more. And this music, goddamn this music, the full version of this song (from Tunç Çakır's Voltage Controlled Music) is 11 minutes long and I would highly recommend seeking it out since it's absolutely phenomenal the whole way through.

This scene absolutely sidelined me. Did not foresee something this existential and deeply sad on my first run through. What an incredible moment.
Ok, there’s a lot of theories on this scene, but I think it will end up being fifteen’s dying words to zero. The font is the same as the font fifteen speaks in, and fifteen may be asking zero to kill him so he can escape the hell chronos has put him in.
TookALevelInBadass just because zero doesn’t use a gun in the gameplay doesn’t mean he never does, it only means he used it in the war
Also, Zero didn’t kill the child and we know it was him because he took the mask off
And we don’t see 15’s sword either
At the end fifteen is standing totally still with V chopped up in the other room, I think he's in withdrawal at that point.
Jhare true that. I still believe that it might be fifteens words, but due to what you said, maybe right before he enters withdrawal? After all, if the brain is destroyed before withdrawal, it won’t happen.
My idea is that zero teams up with fifteen to get revenge on the people who did this to them, but before they reach their goal, fifteen gets mortally wounded, and asks zero to destroy his brain to prevent total withdrawal. He then asks zero to finish off the leader of the ones who had done this to them.
The reason zero hears this in a vision may be due to an upper dosage of chronos, which the psychotherapist prescribes him near this point. He may have seen further into the future than even he knows, due to enhanced precognition triggered by a larger dose, making him see the death of a friend.
Jhare Thanks! I’ll be sure to watch your video to see your ideas as well, as they seem really well thought out!

this game is pure art... perfect
When the cool slow-mo samurai game reaches out and hurts you in real life
SPOILER WARNING - FINISH THE GAME BEFORE READING THIS COMMENT
I think this might be Fifteen speaking to Zero, be it now or at some point in the future.
For one, the font used for this text only appears in one other place in the game, that being Fifteen introducing himself as the true Dragon.
Also, "When the drug runs out, time stops, and you're stuck in the jungle forever". At this point in the timeline, Zero doesn't know for certain what withdrawal from Chronos would do to him, that only comes when he sees V before the Chinatown level.
And finally, "I know what comes next. I need to ask you a favor." This implies the speaker is talking to somebody else, so this isn't just Zero's internal monologue.
Honestly I don't know though, the text is vague enough that, for all I know, Headhunter could be the one speaking (were she not dead after the final mission).
That line, “I know what comes next. I need to ask you a favor.” is the one that sticks with me the most. Whoever this is, be it Fifteen, Zero, or even Headhunter, it doesn’t matter. It’s someone who’s on Chronos who knows that they’re running out. “I know what comes next” refers to the withdrawal, and “I need to ask you a favor” where the favor in question would be “I need you to kill me.” They know that that moment is their only opportunity to doe because if they wait too long then they’ll be stuck within their memories forever.
Maybe the -684 days remaining are a hint of this theory
"Twenty-eight years in that godforsaken jungle." "It's only been a week, but it feels like a year." This suggests that he's perceiving time at less than 2% of its regular speed, and there are 365 days in a year. The days are counting down to "judgment day," which is the day that Zero was tasked with killing a family being protected in a vault.
If Zero is seeing the FUTURE then "-684 days remaining" suggests that the events transpiring in Katana Zero happened almost two years previously. To me, that suggests that Zero might come by more Chronos and live a little longer. The first time I saw it, though, I just figured he was becoming drug-addled
CAP
Zero is by far my favorite video game protagonist. The game turns your love for the satisfying gameplay, into horror as you realize that Zero is doing this all for the drug. The thing that destroyed his mind and his existence. The thing puppeteering him. For possessing inhuman skill and combat ability, and being an unkillable god, Zero is the most human protagonist I’ve played as in a game. What a masterpiece. Can’t wait to see how his story progresses in the dlc, and where Zero’s fractured mind takes him next.
Are you sure it's the drugs? It sounds like it's PTSD.
The drugs effect how you experience time, it’s possible during withdrawal that all of his past memories are collapsing in on themselves and he can’t escape seeing the pain he caused during the war
