  • The African American Trailblazers honors the African American contribution to the American story and the significant accomplishments of twelve (12) heroic African Americans in areas such as the arts, sciences, politics, education, and business.
The African American Trailblazers was conceived as part of Americas 400th anniversary celebration, the documentary and exhibition represent the collaborative effort of several community, regional government, and corporate partners to highlight the historic contributions of African Americans in the Colonial Period, Revolutionary War, Civil War, Reconstruction, and 20th Century that positively changed the Commonwealth, our country, and the world.
The documentary vignettes were directed by Emmy Award winner producer Eric A. Futterman and tell the stories of 12 historic African American Trailblazers and describe other notable achievements since the first Africans arrived in Jamestown in 1619. It features re-enactments, music, historical photos, paintings and interviews with historical experts and African American Trailblazer award recipients Dr. Maya Angelou, Mr. Raymond Boone, Dr. Wyatt T. Walker and others.

As my student Shakira and I research and learn about Dr. Woodson, Shakira would like to share that Dr. Woodson escaped slavery from his own efforts, by his own hard work. I would like to add that his passion for knowledge, his thirst for to teach the world the truth about black excellence, enlightened the global world and reminded us what true contributions Africans have made world wide. We give thanks.

I'm a 15 or 16th generation descendant of Dr. John Woodson, who in 1619 bought six slaves near Jamestown VA. One of these slaves was also the ancestor of Carter Woodson. I am amazed to learn of my connection with this great man. Those of us benefitting from generations of white privilege owe an incalculable debt to those who suffered for our well-being. I'm equally humbled and proud to be connected to Carter Woodson even if only through the tragedy of the slave trade. Another rather amazing connection: my parents attended Berea College, KY, Carter Woodson's alma mater.

Here is a piece on the purpose of Black History month. Lets not get it twisted. Carter G. Woodson had a vision to tell the world of the contributions we have made that make this nation great.

Celebrating Black History Month. I remember growing up my daddy had me to write a one page report that I had to read to him at the end of the day for Black History Month EVERYDAY. I did this until my sophomore year in high school. I didn't stop though because I knew what he was trying to instill in me. Everyday was a different person, a fresher point of view, with the same goal in mind. Thanks daddy. I should put you on my list for black history. (Wink) So here's one of my favorites Carter G. Woodson-Father of Black History Month.

Your Dad was on point big time. If black parents across this country did that with their children instead of having popular entertainment corrupt their impressionable young minds we will make some real progress.

Glorious_Dominator16 I understand the essence of what you're getting at, but be-careful not to fall into their game of putting each other down. We can elevate one without having to compare. LeBron is as classy as they come as far as modern day athlete and he's done a lot for the black community.

Thanks for the video. I've encountered an elder and relative (Jimmy Spice Curry) who has talked to me on various topics. Here are some of his thoughts, I haven't come to a conclusion yet because I'm still learning and researching. His points as outlined in a recent coffee meeting: a) Did Carter G Woodson support U.S. Imperialism? b) If not, should we promote black soldiers as heroes or as victims desperate for jobs, income, college money who go into military under that duress? c) Is the U.S. currency one built on slavery, oppression and racism and if so should certain ethnic groups form their own currencies (digital, and otherwise via bartering, etc). d) Do most black organizations charge exorbitant membership fees dissuading avg income people from joining and leading to only the voices of middle-income and richer blacks being heard (a skewed perspective, and a classism in and of itself, further perpetuating racism, and/or class system, boule types).

Who exactly was the man in the assembly space referring to as Jews? The European converts to Judaism and their descendants in Europe and the USA, citizens of Euro-Isreal?
    2. How come Ethnic Jews with middle Eadtern DNA are living in peace with their Middle Eastern peoples and other Asians in the Eastern world?!
    3. Your reference to the indigenous peoples (First Nations) of America is on point).

Is it just me? I find it uncomfortable listening to people of color talking about me as if they arent Too, a person of color as well as if We people of color arent in a continual fight for recognition. Are people with knowledge deeming themselves as one who are above being judged by their color? Isnt the better than thou adage separating us; Correct me?
