Charlie is definitely not a loser. And, it wasn't "reluctance," it was shell shock (what we'd call PTSD, now). So, Charlie is a veteran with PTSD, when they had just realized that PTSD/shell shock was a thing. The movie takes place in 1918, shell shock was discovered in 1917.

Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman still remains as my 1st favorite live-action version of the character, and her 2017 solo movie is the main reason why.
