    This was amazing, but Shogo you mention that they can ship it to over seas but it had to have a letter signed saying it wasn’t of important cultural property. What defines important cultural property with swords and why can’t a foreigner purchase such a sword. (I can guess but I’d rather ask so I’m not mistaken)

    • @ShinElton
      @ShinElton Год назад +38

      A sword of important cultural property is one that has been evaluated by the NBTHK (Japanese Sword Preservation Association) as Juyo Bunkazai (important cultural property) or above. There are swords evaluated at less (4 main levels - Hozon, Tokubetsu Hozon, Juyo, Tokubetsu Juyo) that can be shipped abroad. The Tokubetsu Juyo often include swords of historical significance already and can reach 50k+ USD.

    • @LetsaskShogo
      @LetsaskShogo  Год назад +69

      Everyone has already given you the correct answer, it’s just simply to prevent any national treasures to accidentally go overseas! However such treasures would usually not be sold at an affordable price at a regular katana shop, so 99% of the time you will be able to buy the katana you want😊 It’s just to double check!

      Do you have any sort of shinken experience? If not DO NOT buy a nihonto for your first if you plan on doing alot of cutting.
      Buy yourself a modern replica made with higher grade steels and get away from folding and lamination but make sure it has a hamon.
      Walter Sorrell. Howard Clark Rick Barrett Josiah boomershine. Or some of the practictioners higher grade stuff like motohara.
      Nihonto are very delicate in some Cases. And you'll get attached to you first sword. Buy a beater modern steel blade. And then get a nihonto for practicing kata and such and occasionally cutting. They're alot more expensive to maintain as you have to send them back to Japan for sharpening.

    If you noticed, the store clerk handed the katana to its owner with the cut side towards himself, thus showing respect and trust projected on the recipient. This is the proper way to handover a katana

    Very interesting video, thank you Shogo. I have visited the shop in 2013 and it truly is amazing. As I am a fellow swordsman (European blades though) I really love your sword and martial arts related videos.
    I now wonder, what the "real" in real katana means? Does it signify it being sharp or ist it something different? Initially I thought it being a historical blade, but that obviously is not the full truth...
    I hope to come back to Kyoto soon, as it is an amazing city. Keep up the great work!

    • @xanderchia7247

      I think “real” might have a different meaning for different people. Some might refer to a sharp and functional katana as real, while wallhangers and iaito are not. Others might refer to katana made using traditional methods as “real”, and not whether it is functional. The latter collectors refer to as “nihonto”.

      Thank you for clarifying that. Makes sense to me :)

      By “real” in this video, I mean that it’s sharp and not a zinc alloy sword for training! The ones that are sold on the first floor of the shop are dull for safety 😊

    Amazing!! I mean... I don't know where to start with what impresses me the most?!! For $4K plus, I don't I'd let anyone aside myself touch it, but hearing you speak about it so causally helps to relax my viewpoint. Perhaps I am focused on the more insignificant part of it.🤔 Hmmmm? A down payment on a house or pull with this and declare the house mine🧐🤔

    you should prolly get another one and have someone like kazu or shogo have it on and ready all the time when youre cutting mats with the tourist. never let it just be the tourist because that could spell trouble in a "thinking ab every situation" type of way.
