So helpful! Thank you so much❤
Thank you so much, this is exactly the video I needed! I was struggling to get good sound in the G string in higher positions and I look forward to trying these tips.
You're very welcome! Keep us posted how it goes!
Heather, thank you very much for the detailed pointers.
You are most welcome! Glad you found the video!
Love the exercises and focusing on relaxing everything, especially that shoulder. Straight bow, hearing the difference closer to the bridge in the upper positions. It's been a good practice.
Excellent! Glad you found it helpful. Thanks for watching.
i just got back into playing the violin a few weeks ago. took a few years break. mainly due to me being lazy... i didn't remember a bunch of the techniques my teacher taught me, and my budget is a little tight to be able to pay for lessons again. I am soooo happy that people are willing to help in these kinds of videos! I can't believe I ever stopped, because i love practicing :D sadly, i forgot where I put my violin muter... when I find it, I won't have to stop at 11pm LoL. Thank You for all that you do! -Shalom :D
Super glad you are getting back into practicing. Keep me posted on what you would like to see in a video to help you along :) Aleichem shalom 😊
@@HeatherKaye i'm going through the String Builder Book 1by Samuel Applebaum right now. when i have some questions, which i know i will LoL, i will not hesitate to ask! can't wait to get vibrato down. however, getting the basics down pact is my current goal. practice, practice, practice! i look forward to all the help i can get. the violin is so much fun, even when learning from mistakes it is fun. just playing anything is uplifting. -Shalom :D
The hole set up good too see the ins and outs a big thanks
Great. Thanks for watching.
4 year old video and so helpful and timeless instruction
this really helped me bcz for some reason everytime i played C it sounded very airy and scratchy but this really helped it sound a bit better
Perfect!!! Curious to know if you find that airy and scratchy C when you play C anywhere else on your violin or only on the G string.
Yes, I do Heather. Thanks for asking. Moreover, I broke my radius bone when I was very young and I should have had surgery to have a pin placed inside to fuse the bone better. As such, I have trouble pronating enough to reach lower notes of the G string. I may need surgery? Checking with my surgeon. It's very frustrating and I feel as though my skills to successfully play my beloved Violon are limited. Sacre bleue. At least for now. So improving my tone and access to the G string is all-important to me.
Thank.you heather.....I am seventy years old and I hope they have violins and pianos all of the beautiful music instrument up in heaven so I can play up in heaven also....I hope so..if they do I will come and take lessons from you and Katie...

You are most welcome. Thank you for watching :)
Stephanie, how is your shoulder?
@@HeatherKaye It is my forearm radius bone that was broken when I was younger. The healing of the bone created a slight deformity reducing my range of motion for needed supination of my left forearm. I am seeing an orthopedic surgeon next week to see if he can do something. My lack of range of motion for supination restricts my access to G string and notes A, B and C certainly D on G string. I do exercises to increase range of motion for supination. Schradieck helps. So do scales. The G String is the real problem.
@@StephanieHughesDesign Hopefully the surgeon can help. Keep me posted. Have you experimented with the violin hold by placing it lower on the shoulder or not using a shoulder rest?
Hello Heather!
I have a question: I have just recently done a 28 day challenge to get rid of tension and I think I've gotten better😅 I do struggle with a clear tone on the D and G strings. I know you need to have enough pressure in the fingers playing the notes but I'm worried that it'll go back to tension if I do, so if I make sure I increase my finger weight/pressure on the string but keep my thumb relaxed is that ok? Hope that makes sense😅
Yes! With the fingers you can do a little study. Find out how lightly you can put your fingers down and still have good tone :)
Would love to find a link for the 28 day challenge. TIA
But doesn't each string have a recommended elbow height? As a beginner, I'm constantly asked to raise the elbow up to shoulder level when at G.
Should I keep the arm low for every string instead?
Thank you 😊
You're welcome 😊Thanks for watching!
thanks a lot
You are most welcome. Thanks for watching!
Ma'am my first finger on e and g sounds scratchy... I tried by applying different pressure.( high and low both and medium too) all other finger sounds good but not first finger... Please help
You’re a great instructor! :) thank you
You're so welcome! Glad it was helpful.
If one does all you say to do and playing notes, 1st position on G string still sounds odd, could there be an issue with the bass bar or sound post inside the violin? I have tried different string types from steel core to synthetic core and my G open string sounds beautiful but when playing notes on it in first position to my ear sounds kind of airy. My violin is fairly new, a Franke Henner, not all that expensive. Notes on the G string do sound better when I put much more bow pressure on the string. Notes on it sound terrible just bowing with the weight of the bow. (warning: I am new to violin).
The G string definitely needs more weight than the other strings. Check your contact point and that your bow is going straight. IT is possible that the violin needs a sound post adjustment but only a luthier would be able to give you concrete information related to your instrument.
@@HeatherKaye Thank you for your help! I find when I put more bow weight on the G string when playing notes in the first position that it REALLY comes alive! I need to learn what weight is just right. Thank you so much for your excellent video!
What tips did you implement from this video to improve the tone on your G string?
i am super frustrated. i’m a viola player in middle school and i have a concert next week and tomorrow i have to do a playing assignment that has a lot of g’s in it and it’s going to decide where i am placed in the concert. when i play my g string, it kinda sounds like muffled. it’s hard to explain but when i play it’s hard to PULL sound out of it. it feels like even if i put on rosin or anything it’s just sitting on the string and when i pull the bow it sounds scratchy and like it’s not making a good sound.
Edit: got a size up a few weeks after I commented. I think it was just the g string on that viola or my bow (my bow had lost many hairs before I even received it) because my new viola plays much better! The g string was probably old on my old one
When was the last time you changed your G string?
This is my issue. This is a violin I've owned for 10 years but have only started to play it continuously in the past 4 months. I have played a different violin before, and I don't remember the G string being this much of a struggle. It seems impossible to get a sound out of it that isn't scratchy.
@@carolinek8311 how old is the G string?
@@HeatherKaye Probably over 10 years old.
@@carolinek8311 you definitely need new strings.
what the name of the song at 0.50
It was just something I made up on the fly.
All the violin videos are played the same way.100%!!! LOUD! Very frustrating. We don't always play loud in orchestra. You draw the bow across the G string, and the others, LOUD. My issue is the G string NOT SOUNDING when I have to play very softly. Only when played SOFTLY. You do play softer at the 6:35 mark. My violin would not do that well. There are passages in Symphony's that require very soft, moody, passages and my G string will NOT do that. As I draw the bow across, the sound will SKIP. If I lean down a bit more, the sounds are TOO LOUD.
I change the strings, I clean the strings, I wash my hands, I don't over rosin the bow, yet nothing stops the skipping. I'd love to hear a video of very SOFTLY violin playing on the G string. I can't find one.
I keep sliding on the G string!! 😟🎻
Definitely a bow arm issue.
@@HeatherKaye yes I agree!! 🥴I’m striving to perfect that now.
