A well configured Waydroid for ARM Android emulation with Steam selling Android games such as PvZ 2 and others will make Linux gaming better than any other platform, and the Steam Deck the best console (it is already the best console in handheld format). PS: I think that an official, or licensed, Steam Controller 2 with pads must be built. Why don't you and other Deck / Linux RUclipsrs launch a kickstarter campaign to see what would be the interest in such a device?. Ps2: Mouse cursor size with proton and wayland (at 4k x3) is very small and cannot be changed, also Steam client need to go to Big Screen and back to take the configuration (4k without x3 until that is done), reported long ago, but it seems it is low priority.
@@gardiner_bryant As far as I know, all VR standalones use Android. The Quest is based on Oculus Go, which was based on Samsung GearVR which was developed in partnership with Oculus. In fact you can sideload android apps in quest and they work just fine (well, most of them), quest just draw them as floating windows.
My best guess for Android compatibility is to make it easier for developers to port their Quest games/apps to SteamVR. The unfortunate reality right now is that the VR market is very fractured, and valve could greatly improve things for PCVR users with a proton-like compatibility layer.
Don't most VR headsets run some flavor of Android OS? Seems like Steam would want to be able to manipulate Android apps if they want to interface with VR headsets.
Supporting android apps adds as you said plenty new software options. Personally I am fan of flatpaks which are supported on steam deck, but being objective the way flatpaks manage permissions is confusing for non technical people. It would be an easy way to add software options to deck users that are not tech savvy and do not want to deal with the headaches of dealing with flatpaks
For the most popular game chart - DRG:Survivor had a massive update last week - basically it was "add the repeatable progression present in all other auto-shooters" patch, so people came back en masse - I suspect it will fall few places down once the players get most upgrades done.
Quest Games is why Deckard would have some kind of Android support since the Quest is running a specialized version of Android. It being supported on the Steam Deck itself is kind of worthless since you know its a full blown Linux PC, but for Deckard the VR headset having some kind of Quest game support even if they would have to be side loaded as well as PC gaming via Proton Compatibility would be a legit game changer for the VR Space
Well, just a forewarning for anyone planning on getting the KH collection, aside from KH3, mostly all the games are bugged to hell and back for anyone using 10 or 20 series GeForce, Polaris or RDNA3 Radeon, possibly even Arc gpus for strange reasons, possibly due to them trying to address fixes for 30 and 40 series, while optimizing for the Steam Deck. This is of course on the Windows side for now, but I don't know what the Linux side will look like for anyone not on 30, 40, or 6k series gpus at this time in terms of stability for the games. Hopefully Square is able to rush to fix everything, but for now, I think only Steam Deck owners and some select gpu series users will be spared of the crap the rest of us (including a 7k series owner like myself) have to deal with as far as KH 1 through DDD goes.
Could it be that Valve is planning a competitor to the Quest series of standalone VR-Headsets. The Quest series rund on the Android-Linux based "Meta Horizon OS". It would maybe take a bit of tinkering but it wouldn't be unpossible to make an pure Linux based competitor to that that doesn't exclude Android apps.
I wonder if Steam is going to open an alternative app store for games on Android, and will let you run your android games purchased there on Deck as well. Maybe (fingers crossed) they'll eventually do the same for iOS after Apple finally opens up to 3rd party app stores.
given deckard is assumed to be at least partially standalone, maybe it is using some android os like the quest headsets use, and the waydroid would be for backwards compatibility with older devices, or something to do with the semi tethered approach valve has hinted at for deckard ; edit: also maybe this is related to steamdecktv or whatever that device will end up being called
I bet the reason to include Android apps is to close the streaming gap for Steam Deck. To be able to watch Plex, Netflix, Hulu or anything without forcing those services to build native clients for the Steam deck
The Kingdom Hearts Collections have always been named like that. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue
Hi Gardiner. Can you try ghostwire tokyo in your deck? It is a verified game that, in the last couple months stay stock loading and crashes the deck. Thanks.
Personally I prefer the DS4 to the Dual Sense because of the ergonomic shape. But since you can not find new DS4 controllers. The Steam Hori pad could be a good main PC controller. Gyro is a must. Might have to import it.
I don't think Valve would really get into the Android app stuff themselves, but I think it would make enormous sense to have Android support on Steam OS machines [edit: So I think it's not unlikely they'd consider easy Android support out of the box]. The more stuff you have like that, the more Steam OS will be seen as the easy "it just works" option, while Windows will be seen as the option for nerds who like to do things the hard way.
I'd like native app support for SD there's alot of good android games and apps that would be nice to have. COD mobile, minecraft ( a decent version) and easier remote play options
I mean, if you're talking about bedrock, there's the bedrock launcher for Linux/Unix, which is just the android version CoD Mobile though I'd like to have.
waydroid and steamvr could mean that valve maybe is bringing Android vr support on their headsets for easier porting from other headsets like the quest which uses Android!
I've noticed baldurs gate 3 drops below 20 fps sometimes but its really not noticeable because its a slow game. I've never really noticed but going to reddit thats all people complain about. Honestly not a big deal.
I've been saying that the Steam Deck successor wouldn't necessarily be a device but Steam OS being available on all ARM devices (phones, tablets, TVs). By this point Valve wouldn't need to concern themselves with hardware anymore.
But why wouldn't Valve want to own the hardware and software? Don't give Valve to much credit, if they can own both, they will, it's why they haven't released steamOS, they want to control both
@@flamingscar5263Don't get confused, the Steam Deck is a gateway to their store. That's the whole point of it. If they don't have to make hardware while still opening their store to a huge demographic they won't. ARM devices is that huge demographic.

I used to own an Nvidia Shield and after the initial hype were off for me I didn't really have any good games that made me want to keep playing on there. Most of the games I play on my phone are quick games that aren't really suited to the Steam Deck so like I said I have no idea.

Maybe they want to make it easy to port Quest apps to Deckard, or even to run unmodified APKs as long as they don't use private Meta APIs.
I didn't know quest used Android. That would make a lot of sense
And they probably don't use many private meta APIs, openXR tends to be the industry standard and meta openly supports it
