- In one of the funniest scenes ever in the history of this storied and revolutionary sitcom known as "All In The Family", Lionel, the son of George and Louise Jefferson, is getting engaged to Jenny, his sweetheart. The Jefferson's decide to throw an Engagement party. Everyone shows up, including Jenny's parents, who have quite a shock for all at the party, especially to the bigoted Archie Bunker and George. Hilarious and eye opening, even more so in today's day and age. Notable also for other actors playing the roles of Jenny's parents, they are not Franklin Cover and Roxie Roker, who the world is accustomed to seeing on the Jefferson's sitcom which debuted about a year after this episode.
RIP Sherman Hemsley. Imagine a man so talented, they actually held the part of George Jefferson just for him. Truly an icon!
A kick in the head aint it?
8-1/2 minutes with more laughs and acting packed in than in most SEASONS of today's situation comedies. Huzzah!
One of the greatest shows in TV History! Archie and George are great!
Yes it def is
To this day, still the best show ever created. This show transcends generations and still relates to this day.
100% correct 👍
Classic tv show..This show wasn't afraid to tackle touchy subjects that was taboo back then. That's why it's still funny and timeless.Shows now can't hold a candle to this one.
CLASSIC.. RIP Sherman Hemsley.. Truly one of the best. Also, RIP to the late Carroll O'Connor. Two of the finest TV actors all all time!!
What a great way to make something so divisive, so completely funny. Great television moment.
i think most agree, this show was priceless then and certainly now, you would never be able to get away with this now, and god even back then it was testing the waters, what great writing and acting
RIP Sherman......You provided many of laughs for me and my family growing up as a young girl
That was my all-time favorite 8 1/2 minutes of the show: Archie and George find common ground in their mutual closed-mindedness.
Yeah, just like when Archie closed his mind to looking after Mike's emergency appendix operation, and how he genuinely likes Lionel and WANTED to go to his engagement party, ah, Archie was brought up in a different time and had a lot of responsibility thrown at him at an early age, Archie was influenced by the overwhelming thoughts of the day, at an impressionable age...he always came through for his family and people in need as much as you could ever hope for from a person, yeah, sure, he had his "off-color" (Pardon the pun...) ways and thoughts, but OVERALL under everything, he has a HEART of GOLD!!!!!!!
@@elvicare35I agree with you 100 percent! And I don't say that often or lightly.
@@DUCKDUCKGOISMUCHBETTER Thanks a lot for your response!!!
@@elvicare35 No problem. There's a lot of people who don't give Archie his due.
How brilliant this is. I love Archie's expression at 0:55 right after he tells Jefferson that the invitation he sent by his wife was "very white of ya". He mostly smirks in a friendly way with a hint of inner smile. There are some classic moments in this clip. I used to watch this when I was young with my parents and they loved it too.
I remember as a kid watching this show with my grandparents. It will always be funny.
I ain't used that word in 3 yrs. Classic
One of the top five "All in the Family" episodes ever. Hilarious and deep at the same time. I love Archie's and George's toast at the end. Enemies commiserating about the state of the modern world. Hard to believe that this episode originally aired 37 years ago. Even harder to believe that an entire generation in their 20s has never seen it.
I think this is brilliant. Absolutely hysterical. Incredibly smart and honest.
This is a classic episode. Archie and George are a perfect combination here.
gone are the days when television was this raw!!!
Well played Mr Willis👏☺️👏 'May I have this dance' & Mrs Jefferson a cool lady 🎉 Hilarious 😂🎉👏💫
I can NEVER get tired of this clip! Just epic, classic and comedic all the way 'round!
A legendary show by legendary actors and actresses. They all will be missed and under-appreciated.
Total CLASSIC!.
We need more Archie's & Jefferson's who get it 😎✌
RIP Sherman Hemsley and thanks for all the laughs you have given.
That last part of the scene is priceless! Sums up both Archie and George in a 5 second nutshell.
The most perfect 8 minutes and 32 seconds I ever watched.
Growing up Latina, I would flip the channel to another show. Not until I was an adult did I decide to watch All in the Family & MANNNNNNNN!!! I love the show. Makes me laugh like crazy. Such realistic writing. This is one show I'm sorry I skipped the channel on growing up. Back then, I would have learned alot from it.
"Listen to that, I ain't used that word in 3yrs!"
LMAO! Epic
Thanks so much. I've loved this show for years. Even as a kid I knew it was just satire.
If we have more shows like this one on tv today how much fun would it be. There was a life lesson even in this. Archie and Jefferson two peas in a pod, they fit perfectly together and it was great.
One of the greatest comedy bits in the history of TV.
One of the most amazing episode of this series.
"This I gotta see!" Amazing.
All of the characters on this show were so well developed. You can actually believe they're real people.
Weezie rocks!! She always kept everything under control. I loved the episodes with Archie and George together. You always knew something was gonna happen.
One of my all time favorite episodes. "I'm nobody's mammy!" classic line
40 years ago....and still nothing better!
Wow! What an awesome clip. I watched this as a kid in the 70s, had no idea it was so damn clever. That was very tense. What a bunch of wonderful actors.
One of the greatest scenes in the history of TV.
one of my favorites shows, so clean, so good without coursing or "f" words
Just a few racial slurs
haaahaaahaaaahaaa... this is one of my all time favorite Archie momenst. I love when as soon as Lionel introduces both parents, Archie's face kills me everytime...
This is probably one of TV's funniest clips.
This is one of my all time favorites!
"Here's to yesterday" I couldn't agree more, that line could be taken so many ways, but it showed how Archie and George sometimes thought alike and didn't realize it.
Truly one of the best episodes of one of the best series in American television history.
I forgot how good this show was and how it was a mirror on our world it was
Brilliant writing and brilliant acting.
One of the rarest moments in which we can see George and Archie mutually agreeing, LOL XD .
This episode is still good after all of these years!
Classic, pure classic. My how times have changed and unfortunately this would never make it in today's shows.
My favorite show growing up. Watched with the whole family, and it felt like the world on TV was changing in front of our eyes.
I love the George and Archie rivalries one of the best on TV "Those were the Days"
"Lionel's engagement " episode is the funniest of all episodes of All In The Family" The whole scene is masterfully scripted for c.omedy and will continue to be funny for decades to come. It is a keeper.
I LIKE HOW MOTHER JEFFERSON TOLD ARCHIE WHO YOU CALLING MAMMY LOL!!
This is a great episode -- not only does it have the usual excellent cast, but it also has Sherman Hemsley/George Jefferson, and the cast who played Mrs. Jefferson (I can't remember her name but she was a great stabilizing force on the Jeffersons), Mr. Jefferson's mom, and Lionel. Everyone of them is credible and contributes to the humour and gives us insight into issues that still affect us.
This is really well written and phenomenally acted. I can't watch sitcoms anymore (or tv either), when I grew up it was Seinfeld, and after that any "sitcoms" referencing real situations producing comedy just kind of died out.
4:51 LOL the look on archies face is classic
Thanks for posting. This was fun to watch.
What a brutal toast at the end lol.
thx for posting!
Just awesome writing and acting!
I love how real life this show is
Archie and George are both hilarious 😂 😆
Bunker and Jefferson are awesome when they get together!
Absolutely great when Jenny's father asked Louise to dance!❤😂
Absolutely classic. I wish I were alive back in the good old days.
Great show brings back great memories w/ mt grams rip, this is when comedy was real comedy!!!
I swear this is some of the best comedy ever...
Great clip. I always enjoyed it when Archie and George were in the same scenes.
7:19 "Head near the door, Edith. There's gonna be a race riot."
LMFAO!!!!!!!
Carroll O'Connor, Sherman Hemsley....just classic. Classic!!!
Great acting and great chemistry.
All in the Family and The Jeffersons were the best!!!
i loved those sitcoms in their day. Simple funny times.
That last quote from Bunker and Jefferson. "Here's to yesterday" I can imagine,if they lived in the america of today, they'd probably say the same thing.
I used to love when Archie and Goerge were on the same episodes. LMAO
Amen, jpjonesy. I'm a black male, and enjoyed this show. How great it was to watch this in a room of blacks and whites (two of my white friends were Republicans, also present in the student campus center when afternoon reruns were broadcast). No political correctness was needed. We had differences, but we made fun of absurdities on both sides. "Those were the days". I've watched this scene about ten times or more. Even the N word, utilized an a way that didn't offend. Genious!
"Listen to that - I ain't used _that_ word in three years!"
🤣
This show is so spot on!!! I like how they confront racism and prejudice in a really off-beat, light-hearted way. A TV show that makes you laugh AND think!!! Such a shame political correctness has taken these shows away, we really need these shows HERE AND NOW 😁😆😅😂🤣👍✌️!!!!!!!!
RIP Sherman Hemsley , He will be truely missed.
This episode is HILARIOUS!!!!!!
OMG..."...talking that way to your Mammy"! This episode and the one when Archie gives the eulogy ( uroliogy ) at Stretch Cunningham's funeral are my all time favorite episodes.
LOL LMAO~ i miss these shows~ great humor :)))
The media does not want tv shows anymore that force people to think, and force us see the reality of every day life. God forbid we actually sit down, have a drink and try to understand each other.
LOL!! This is the best scene ever!
classic. Excellent writing, superb acting, and it's actually FUNNY without resorting to lewd 9th grade bathroom humor, AND an astute realistic social commentary to boot! ... Like the title song says, "THOSE WERE THE DAYS"
That's all the genius of Norman Lear, and he also had enough sense to pick the right actors for both those roles.I'd actually be curious to see both these sitcoms on the big screen, even if the adaptations of both probably wouldn't be the best.
"That's no way to talk to your little mammy...."
BUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! Classic!
Classic Episode. RIP Sherman Hemsley and Carroll O'Connor. Two Great Icons.
that "its going to be race riot" part had me on the floor!
In this clip, Jenny Willis is played by no other than Lynne Moody!!
Archie Bunker and Fred Sanford (George Jefferson was cool too) are the most memorable characters in TV history...here's to the good old days of Tv.
it doesn't get better then this!!!
This is a classic show!
gotta love how at 5:12 archie invokes the "chickens come home to roost". brilliant.
"Mixed marriage leads to mixed dancing." HAHAHA!
I liked Jenny's dad here a LOT better than the one they ultimately picked for "The Jeffersons" series. He would've been GREAT!
Yes he would have been great but Franklin Cover was good also. And even though this Jenny is quite attractive, I would still go with Berlinda Tolbert.
RIP Sherman - a comic genius, one of the great's in TV history and one of my favorites. George and Archie were just amazing together! I loved all of the All in the Family episodes that featured the Jeffersons (even the one with the other George). But Sherman made George his own!
this is epic George and Archie . RIP George Jefferson .
Classic!!!!! Funny as hell.
Thanks. There's probably more to it than that, but that explains a lot.
R.I.P. Carroll and Sherman! THE BEST AT THEIR CRAFT!
What an hysterical episode. The Jeffersons was a great spin off. This is when TV was actually funny, when everyone didnt have to be so Politically Correct. All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Sandford & Son were all GREAT. I remember the lady that plays Jennys mom here being in an episode of Sandford & Son. She played a character older than Lamont with Lamont asking her to marry him. Watch Fred & Lamont in the episode 'A Matter of Life and Breath' OMG So hysterical I almost peed in my pants!
Think i'll toast to yesterday and better times myself.
"That bartender is willing to work for me because if you've got enough green in your pocket, black becomes his favorite color." - George Jefferson.....classic
Music and TV were at their very best during the 70's. Never again will TV be this funny again because it doesn't have enough guts to do so anymore.
