  • I’ve disassembled my Becker 754 radio from my Mercedes benz 560sl and wanted to share the info. Overall very easy to open and locate the battery. I’ll be changing the battery and getting the radio unlocked in a future video

Daniel, thank you for this video. I'm in process of replacing a bunch of capacitors in my 754 and this made it really easy to get everything apart.

What the battery does is hold data in a static ram chip. The dealer reset tool is simply reloading the ram chip with data which is a little bit of software. As long as the radio stays powered up and battery is good the ram chip stays powered up and retains the loaded software from the dealer tool. I just wish I had a moment with the dealer tool to take a snapshot of the data that the tool is sending to the radio. Then we could simply build a simple circuit to reload the radio easily without this tool.

@@Frank-bg6xz I have worked on a permanent solution for the battery where I have a battery that can run for 5-10 years after battery is disconnected. I have very little information regarding the data file and a reliable way to enter it into the radio.

@@anthonyawada2164 the issue with circumventing this radio is that a portion of firmware exists on the microcontroller. The rest exists on the temporary memory. Even with eeprom installed and programmed, the radio would still fail to work after power had been removed!

Bruno Luis I took it to Mercedes Benz of Arlington in Arlington Virginia. There is a guy named Merv there that could do it. Check out my forum posts: www.benzworld.org/threads/becker-754-battery-replacement.3044158/#post-17939146
Call ahead to your local dealers. One might offer to do it for free, or cheap. Some charge a full hour of labor.
