For me, my higher than normal liver function tests revealed a silent problem that was going on. My ALT and AST started getting out of range growing higher each year (Over a three year period by the lab work results). My ALT hit 153 and AST was 88. ALT by the chart was over 113 past normal and AST was 40 points over. So what was causing my Liver to start hitting the panic button??? Well, an ultrasound of the liver showed the Renal Cell Carcinoma that was growing on my right kidney. MRI showed the tumor growing on my left kidney. From what I have read, the ALT enzyme reacts when the RCC gets into the renal artery. Well, two surgeries later, loss of right kidney and a piece of my left my numbers are back in range. I was in good shape, non-drinker, non-smoker, exercised everyday. If your numbers are getting out of whack and your Dr's tell you to stop eating fast food (That's what the dude told me, turned out to be Cancer) just make sure to keep looking at the problem. My bad Liver Function tests saved my life because I kept trying to find out why it was bad and I indeed found out why.

My Urologist said that if the tumors would have been reversed, the Ultrasound on my liver would not have seen the tumors and I would not have made 60. I was 46 when we found RCC Stage 2.

Seems way too dramatic bearing in mind everyone often has raised alt.... with every course of pain killers, pub visit, protein shakes use, junk food lifestyle and many passing infections. None of these raises represent liver damage... so maybe remove the damage and put back the function where it belongs

Hight GGT only is : Auto brewery syndrome is also known as gut fermentation syndrome and endogenous ethanol fermentation. It's sometimes called “drunkenness disease.” This rare condition makes you intoxicated - drunk - without drinking alcohol. This happens when your body turns sugary and starchy foods (carbohydrates) into alcohol.

I have hep c(30 years now) and cirrhosis of the liver(13 years, possibly longer) I don't drink alcohol and I got hep c in the 1980s in Thailand when I got a tattoo. My GGT is roughly 80 and every other test is normal.. They tell me, the hospital.. I have chronic pancreatitis.. Low white count and neutrophils occasionally.. A hernia by my liver, I have the double duct sign as my cbd and pancreatic duct are always dilated, cbd about 10mm and pancreatic duct 6mm,they don't know why and refuse to look, I have a gallstone they refuse to remove and I have a splenic artery aneurysm with diverticulois and now I have stercoral colitis, the drs ignore this where a medication they are giving me causes me terrible constipation and terrible pain and I can't eat any meals.. I just got a phone call off the A and E the other nigt saying I had candid is after a vaginal swab but I don't have any symptoms in my vagina but I have the white discharge in my bowel, and they couldn't do a colonoscopy because the prep won't work and laxatives no longer work because since starting this horrible medication I have severe constipation and I also have QTc prolongation from the same medication.. I'm in terrible pain all the time but get told my bloods are normal but I never see them often my stomach swells out and all I eat are chocolate smarties for a year, nothing else... I'm terrified of this all, I have no dr or GP and also I have emphasemia... Please can anyone help me with any advice as I'm very worried as Drs get sick of me going to hospital for 😣 where they say I have constipation and nothing works to relieve me and stercoral colitis is rare but dangerous, when not watched.. I'm so scared.. Any one, please help I'm in New Zealand and the hospital where I live has a terrible name for alot I hear, and I'm not surprused😢

My alt is 20 and my ast is 20. This is the second time they have been the same. Is the ratio important to look at? My ALP is within normal limits and my doctor didn't comment on it so I don't know if I should bring it up. I have been diagnosed with fatty liver in the past with NASH 1 but I lost about 50 lbs since then but gaining 15 back. My last CT Scan did not show fatty liver so I am just concerned about the ratio since my 15 lb gain.

My blood test showed multiple times higher liver enzymes alt was the highest tho.
I started developing jaundice at the 10th day.
I had my ct and another ultrasound by the end of the second week but it was all good except for a few lymphnodes enlarged next to the gallbladder.
On the 19th day i had a new blood work and it showes all enzymes decreased drastically and it is not too far from highs normal levels. Thats being said bilirubin kept increasing and hit 125 umol/l while it was 77 in the first blood work.
I am feeling much better but still cant eat normally because i get uncomfortable feelings in my guts
    Any ideas?

It sounds like a bile duct blockage perhaps? Blocked by sludge. The bible ducts release bile that aids in helping to break down the food we eat so the stomach can digest it. If there's a slow down in bile production, then it effects how we digest food and can cause stomach pain, but if it's mainly the Alt that's elevated, it can often point to liver and the Ast can be liver but very high can point to the billery system. I'm not a doctor, but since I have chronic liver disease, I would naturally do the research. Your P.C.P should get you set up with a G.I./ heptology Doctor. It's not like you will get any answers on these sites from an actual Dr. As they hate to give info without running their exams on the patient first, and perhaps to even get in trouble hand out info. But again you should see a specialist being a G.I. / heptology, I would!! Good luck.🙏

I am not a drinker or take medications. I am not over weight, in fact, i have lost 40 lbs. and very weak and tired. I was in the hospital this week and my liver enzymes were ALT 444 and AST 554. My hepatitis tests were negative. What can cause these very high readings? Thank you

I am scheduled for an MRCP next week to try and find out. The Dr. Said he hasn't ever seen someone's readings were so high without an obvious cause. Could be autoimmune hepatitus or a tumor or cancer or blocked bile duct or spincter of oddi.
