Photoelectric Effect Demo

  • This is a demonstration of the photoelectric effect using an ultraviolet source, a zinc plate, a Braun electroscope, an ebonite rod, and fur. The zinc plate is place atop the electroscope and charged negatively by rubbing the rod with fur and touching the rod to the plate. The plate is then irradiated by ultraviolet light and quickly loses its charge, as measured by the electroscope, as UV photons eject electrons from the surface.
    This demonstration was created at Utah State University by Professor Boyd F. Edwards, assisted by James Coburn (demonstration specialist), David Evans (videography), and Rebecca Whitney (closed captions), with support from Jan Sojka, Physics Department Head, and Robert Wagner, Executive Vice Provost and Dean of Academic and Instructional Services.

    I would suggest to show also that a common lamp is not able to knock off electrons from the zinc no matter for how long or strong it shines. Only wavelength short enough will so it. Otherwise nice video thanks

      .........in somewhere 1650s the concept of radioactivity was discovered and there were people like you who blankly said IT HAS NO USE IN REAL LIFE .....now the same concept is used in X ray machines , MRI scans , CT scans , AND TREATING CANCER PATIENTS .....Photoelectric effect has huge significance not only it proves that light has no wave nature .....it introduced the dual nature of light (IGNORE IF U WERE NOT SARCASTIC)

    I'm not sure if I'm correct but I think the plate is not "negatively charged" but positively charged, since the rod was charged taken away electrons with the fur (so also positively charged). So the rod took away electrons from the plate.

    Nice demo. I study this in UK. Can I ask a question.
    Why use zinc if it oxidizes? Most metals have similar work function values all around 4 eV.
    Also is it absolutely necessary to pre-charge the plate? Can we not just let the photoelectons carry away negatives and leave a net positive which should also be observable on the electroscope? Thanks anyone.

    • @k-5999
      @k-5999 3 года назад +1

      PRE charge so as to bring the electrons to the surface of the metal to just make the effect more visible.....and only electrons get ejected in photoelectric effect ....

    1:46 How to they know electrons are getting kicked off, rather than mixing with particles from the light and being turned neutral, or something else like that?
    Have they done more complicated experiments where they use detectors elsewhere that detect where the electrons go?

      how can photon neutralise electron?

    • @solank7620
      @solank7620 3 года назад

      @@visweshshukla How can any particle do anything? They're all models. It's called the Standard "Model" for a reason. The existence and behavioral mechanics of these particles is inferred.
      And while I'm grateful for videos like this, the experiment as shown does not necessarily imply what is claimed, it could have lots of interpretations. And obviously at one time it did have lots of interpretations, before the 1905 paper.
      In order to get the interpretation, the model, that they have, they must have had more than this. I'm looking to learn about what those more thorough experimental observations were.

    • @banana6963
      @banana6963 2 года назад

      To turn it neutral the light particles/photons have to have a positive charge but they have been proved to be neutral.
      You might ask how are photons neutral then? It's simple, light rays have not been shown to deflect in electric or magnetic fields and hence can be said to be neutral.

    Thanks for the video!

    • @shauryanrana3906
      @shauryanrana3906 3 года назад

      Yes...after enough exposure to the UV light the zinc plate will get some positive charge accumulation which can be seen by the electroscope...this is due to the plate ejecting more electrons.
