YES IT WAS! I grew up in the '50s. Ironically, I fell in love with European cars because of the QUALITY construction and their uniqueness coming from different countries (no Japanese cars at that time). American cars, other than styling, were ALL pretty much the same... front engine, rear drive with live axle, pretty BLAND actually! Sure, the Detroit Iron was fast and smooth riding, but the European cars had UNIQUE and more advanced engineering. Also, build quality was sadly lacking. I was one of the lucky ones to grow up in the 1950's. I was born in 1945, so my later teen years were in the early 1960's. Cars were a very important thing back then. Not just to the teens, but the the family man too. Everyone took pride in their car. You NEVER saw someone driving around in a dirty filthy car like you do today. It was always cleaned for the weekend, in case you wanted to go for a drive with the family. YES, THAT'S WHAT I SAID ! We actually went for Sunday drives. It was always a real treat . It was a chance to be out with your family and show off your car and maybe like we did, even stop off at an ice cream parlor for a sundae, or banana split ! We lived in Santa Clara, CA and would often drive to San Francisco. It was only a 45 minute drive. We frequented the PLAYLAND, the ZOO and MUSEUM, and FISHERMAN'S WHARF. I even remember driving to San Francisco International Airpirt in 1959, or 1960, when the first Passenger Jet Airliner was on display to the public. What great memories. THANKS, MOM and DAD for such great memories. 💙
Great pictures! @ 2:09 Pacific Coast Highway Laguna Beach, CA. The Mobile Station is still there. The 76 Station is another gas station. On the right, Richfield, Standard, and Ball Room Dancing are gone and part of a Beach Park. The ocean is approx. 500 feet to the right.
It does this old boys heart a world of good remembering when Main streets were the place to be and lined with cars. Ahh the good ole days !!! So glad I was alive then, the memories of walking up town with dad to do some shopping. Today's youngsters will never understand what it was all about.
The west has gone woke. It's a problem because the "progressive" idea of "communities" are anti-tradition - groups of miserable people who's idea of progress is to attack "the system" - BLM,LGBTQ,antifa,diversity/inclusion groups, etc .(nobody ever said there were no issues, what THEY want is very radical and tyranical)Those aren't real communities they only serve to radically attack and alter society and force a marxist/maoist version of society. If I were a millennial I might move to a former soviet block nation, they've been through communism and see through this woke mania.Russia has more women than men, they are more traditional and feminine too.I kinda rambled but I'm a divorced Gen Xer and my options are limited(have kids now,am wedded to liberal New England)If I were your age I'd be all over it.Of course there are the more rural/traditional parts of the US as well.
Beautiful restored historical film. 0:39 the green station wagon. I think I knew someone who's father had one just like that which overheated on family trips. His solution? Over the radiation there was enough space to install a constant drip system onto the front of the radiator. 1:17 Invasion of the Saucer Men. 2:08 Broadway and PCH 1 the Mobil and Union 76 are still on the left but modernized. The tall white building past the 76 station became Laguna Cinemas now closed. Richfield and other others on the right were removed to make a park. 5:13 Atlas tires now owned by a Chinese company that is "mostly selling to Americans." 5:33 Scottsdale today is a place for the insulated wealthy. I dated a lady judge in Scottsdale lin the late 1980s who said in her college days made extra money being a topless dancer :) 5:47 A cold war "Air Raid Shelter" pointing sign. 6:01 Cripple Creek still has kept many of the brick buildings to give it flavor. I haven’t been to many of these towns but the Denver Colorado shot totally shocked me! It looked like it was right by the Capitol Hill where Broadway and Colfax meet, which is sooooooooooo much different and grown out now. Actually I wouldn’t be surprised if the population of the state quintupled since then. I remember as a kid my family moved to Colorado Springs in 1994 and the population was like 240,000 at the time. I think today it’s around 750k with the surrounding areas.
The first picture was not taken in 1942, based on the cars in the picture. The Dodge truck on the left of the picture is a '55 and the picture on the side of the bus is around a '59 Rambler. Don't get me wrong I love these old films, thanks for sharing.
Everything back then was so beautiful people were normal, happy and friendly what a sad state of affairs we are in today makes me wish i had a time machine.
At 2.54 the script reads Los Angeles 1950 BUT on the extreme left of frame is a back fender of a 1952 Chevy. This picture was taken late 1951 or later. Also, behind the 1946 Ford is another car which also appears to be a 1952 Chevy. The 1949-50 had a more sloping rear fender and the 1951-52 look the same as each other with a more squared type of rear fender and the grills are simular but the 51 had no grill teeth and the 52 did. Also in the rear quarter panel below the fuel filler door is a chrome strip that the 1951 did not have but the 1952 did.
You got that right, Blend. I wonder who put the dates on these photos. Almost every one of them is wrong, just by looking at the years of the cars. It starts with Chicago 1942, which is a photo filled with autos from the 1950s. It is a fun site to look at for those of us who were kids in the 1950s, but the egregious errors in dating the photos is disconcerting.
Oh, I wish there was a way I can transport myself back to that era and live in that period. Life looks so beautiful and simple and everything looks so normal unlike our stupid way of life we have today. Oh, I wish.
I was six in late 1960. As a boy I could say what model car was both coming and going as we drove, my father was astounded how accurate I was. Those were the days of filled Churches, women dressed and acted like women, people were hard working, Patriotic. and Men were the authority in the home. There were consequences for bad behavior and family was united and dependable, love was given and respect was taught. and the golden rule was something every kid knew. We said the pledge of Allegiance every morning in school and believed in it, Almost all of that is gone now forever. We will never be the same again. A Nation in decline. But then Americans have a way of clinging to tradition, and improving on what went wrong. Maybe we can even revive and adapt to reclaim some sensibility and pride once again.
0:14 (Chicago, 1942) this has to be 1958 at the earliest, as the taxis are Checker Model A9's - first introduced in ‘58. Plus, the US flags have too many stars
trust was everywhere....we even trusted our government.....although I did have a problem with it when Truman said UFO's aren't real....as they were flying over the city!....bit of comedy there....
Great video with lots of awesome pics, but there are at least two (2) photos which are mislabeled: One of the first pics says it's Greenwich Village, NY in 1959, but there's a '61 Pontiac parked at the curb with a '62 Chevy parked behind it (where the guy on the bike is positioned); also, there's a '61 or '62 T-Bird coming down the street. One of the last pics says it's Chicago, IL in the 1950's, but there's a '61 Buick LeSabre on the far left side of the screen (the black car in front of the Checker cab). Very enjoyable video nonetheless!

Chicago 1942 if I read that right the vehicle is a newer. The general shape in the Greenwich New York farther back in the picture the cars are more rectangular which are lend itself to even a 1960s. I think it's a 1959 and sure somebody might have brand new service van the blue Chevy because that's 60 or 61. The pictures are great. Regardless of the time stamp is correct or not. Just throwing out when I believe is the right opinion based on observation. But in any case it's fabulous to have colored pictures from this era.
@@GordoGambler yeah I think you're right. They just probably did what it was thought of by whoever donated to material. But even though it's mislabeled it was fun to see and be able to step back in time. Way before my time. They say things are easier back then. Well duck and cover. Afraid that the Russians were going to drop a nuclear bomb on us. Korea than Vietnam war. So I don't think things were really any easier back then and they did not even have a microwave. @@frankpienkosky5688 isn't it ironic that what many of our fathers said about the current generation cars back in their days? And even their fathers before them. But somehow each generation looks back and says they're so different from each other. Especially when compared to today's cars were there all jelly beans. I love your jelly Bean comparison. I've heard different comparisons. But I've never heard somebody use jelly beans. That is so true. Massage where is so fortunate in our history to have a man as president he loved his jelly beans. As I said in the movies and I believe it was back to the Future series. You mean the actor Reagan as president? My grandfather would look at a 50 Oldsmobile and a 50 Chevy and say the same thing. He just use a different term that I can't use on a public forum. But his son my dad sure saw the difference between those jelly beans.
Most of these once-vibrant and dynamic downtowns are today ruined husks of what they once were. Thank suburbia, bad, shortsighted government and the shopping malls for destroying. All things considered I'd go back to the 1950's in a heartbeat!
Color film in those days was expensive and slow, meaning you could only get outdoor shots and you had to really think about what you were shooting. But wow: The color in these photos bring a sense of relatability to this world. If only we could make cars exactly like those cars again…
Wow, look how beautiful it looks back in the day. Women wearing dresses, men wearing smart suits , nice cars, no junkie shit heads on the sidewalk taking a piss or taking a shit. Look at how smart it was back then? What’s happened? Now we’ve got the dregs of society living on the sidewalk using it as a toilet and camping wherever they like. People in society back then had class, now look at it, weathered and torn like an old boot that’s been disregarded. What a damn shame. Nice video though, great work!
A few of them are not in the 1950s. The original one is in 1942, when it was World War II. I say America for the continent, but it's a nice video of the United States at the time. It's nice to see the video in color when it was black and white then. When movies were only seen in theaters, there was no Internet, cars were large and the TV was getting popular (the last one in general).
the shopping malls ruined the downtown Americana ....... people treasured their downtowns ...... thank God I grew up with the 50s-60s gas stations, downtown square, and the drive in theaters and drive in restaurants......

The very first picture with the Checker cab is NOT Chicago, 1942!!!!!!!!!! ?????????????!!! You are not altogether accurate for other pics too, for example at 7:09 Chicago, Ill 1950's... There is a new looking 1961 Buick across the street... And another pic soon after that is captioned 1950's, when it is most likely 1940's. Nice pics though.
Great pics…..interesting to note how much more casual dressing the men were in 50s as compared to the 40s from prior photos. Not so much with the ladies as they are consistent with dresses. For those retired and traveling….it would be awesome to see current pics of same scenes to show how drastic the changes. I bet the orange and purple hair with sack of nickel filled spandex will be shocking.
Wow! Not one single black in any of the photographs! No blacks hanging out on every street corner! No gangs, homeless people pitching tents on the sidewalks and drug dealers and homeless people trashing up the public sidewalks.
black folks tended to hang in their own neighborhoods.....["Amos and Andy"?]...momma AND papa were pretty common....and the whole community kept the kids in line....it was second class citizenship but it was still a better quality of life than we see these days
Amazed to learn from this and the three other History Lounge videos I watched (for the cars, really) that there were no Black folks around in the 1950s.
That can't be Chicago in the 50's towards the end of the clip - there is a black 1961 Buick sitting there. Thanks for the videos though, it took me back to my younger days!

I agree with you about the "Mom & Pop" stores, lived in an ethnic community in NE Minneapolis where almost all the stores we needed were within a couple of blocks from home. We could WALK to these stores, NO NEED for a car.......painful to hear! LOL
this was a time when Germany and Japan were in shambles....and offered no competition.....
@@TheOzthewiz sweet little old lady used to run the corner store where I bought my morning candy and my after school pepsi....["12 full ounces that's a lot."]... for 10 cents....last I heard some druggie broke in and murdered her....the world has become an ugly place.....
@@frankpienkosky5688 regardless, no one here really wanted or needed foreign cars.
Belíssimas fotos, todas muito bem conservadas. Parabéns, sou de Bragança-PA-Brasil.

It does this old boys heart a world of good remembering when Main streets were the place to be and lined with cars. Ahh the good ole days !!! So glad I was alive then, the memories of walking up town with dad to do some shopping. Today's youngsters will never understand what it was all about.
A fascinating look at major thoroughfares through the 50's & 60's. 🌇
I am surprised in 1950 how is beautiful America.
so beautiful.....
Thanks a lot 😊
What a great look at a great time in America.
Seems they really had a lot of cars back then too! Gorgeous scenes and No Ads!
We will never have this again, and I was born way too late to see it. Makes me sad, but I'm glad we have the technology to relive it somewhat
A great snapshot of classic cars! Keep up the good work!
Hi Joseph - thanks for watching and for sharing these detailed reactions/comments. There will be more to come!
Good video and cool background music, uncluttered 👍🏻
I agree, best times of my life, I would LOVE to repeat it with no changes on my part, good or bad. ❤️🌹👍
That was beautiful
I haven’t been to many of these towns but the Denver Colorado shot totally shocked me! It looked like it was right by the Capitol Hill where Broadway and Colfax meet, which is sooooooooooo much different and grown out now. Actually I wouldn’t be surprised if the population of the state quintupled since then. I remember as a kid my family moved to Colorado Springs in 1994 and the population was like 240,000 at the time. I think today it’s around 750k with the surrounding areas.
Chicago 1942. First pic. It shows a 1958 checker cab
Also the 50 star flags which means this has to be 1960 or later.
Actually, those may be 49 star flags. If so, that would put the date from 7/4/59 - 7/3/60.
The newer light posts were installed on State Street in 1958, not 1942.
@@violinkev1 should have grabbed one of those 49 star flags...they weren't around long....
The first picture was not taken in 1942, based on the cars in the picture. The Dodge truck on the left of the picture is a '55 and the picture on the side of the bus is around a '59 Rambler. Don't get me wrong I love these old films, thanks for sharing.
So wonderful to see the very active downtown areas. Nothing but a ghost town now after the malls came in and shopping moved to the suburbs😥
Nice and white, the way it ought to be.
Wonderful, attractive Caucasians as far as the eye could see. lol
@Harry Dimitrescu Indeed, and maybe it shall be again. We can hope, can't we.

So enjoyed this! Thank you. Notice all of the small businesses, American made cars? This was what made America great! A lot of pride too!
After WWII, the US was the only fully-functioning major economy left in the world. We had high tax rates as well.
love this!
I don’t know how a country degenerates as fast as America did from the country this was in the 1950s to what it is today is very sad.
would seem to have happened internally....social mores just crumbled....lack of religion seems to have played a part.....
Thanks share this video let me remember those good old day is been colorful is not only oldies black and white picture or movie !
I'm glad you liked it - thanks for watching!
The wonderful cars!
Indeed!
the only way to see them all again...short of car shows....is to take a trip to Cuba......
I wouldn't want to live back then, but to be able to visit would certainly be nice.
I want to visit my hometown during this period. Sure looks a lot better than nowadays
But, diversity is our strength.........said no one after watching this.
some groups assimilate and buy into the system......some never will.......
@frankpienkosky5688 You guys😢 are hypocrites after you made laws to keep people out of your system, hence Civil Rights laws had to be passed smh.
Everything back then was so beautiful people were normal, happy and friendly what a sad state of affairs we are in today makes me wish i had a time machine.
That first picture I believe was maybe 1953 or 4. That Dodge truck on the left is about a '52 to '55 model year.
The first picture is tagged as Chicago in 1942 but I believe those are 50-star flags flying in the picture
It's not even close to 1942!
Great music choice!
SO wonderful to se REAL down town shopping. Can't believe that the first pic is 1942 though.. Cars belie that fact.
@@williammullen6470 You're right about the Chicago 1942.
of course we're old...pushin' 80 myself...but that doesn't mean the memories aren't vivid....or warmly regarded....it was as good as it looks....

The golden years! Christian values of treating everyone with respect and dignity. Never to be seen again.
😅
Oh, I wish there was a way I can transport myself back to that era and live in that period. Life looks so beautiful and simple and everything looks so normal unlike our stupid way of life we have today. Oh, I wish.
WOW!!!! THE REAL GOOD OLD DAYS!
Unlikely. America will continue down the path it's on and become a wealthier version of Mexico.
@Messenger Charles Christ died for the world, not just the British and Americans. You'll find all shades of skin tone in Heaven.
0:14 (Chicago, 1942) this has to be 1958 at the earliest, as the taxis are Checker Model A9's - first introduced in ‘58. Plus, the US flags have too many stars

A wonderful period of this nation before it was destroyed.
malls changed everything....
And also deindustrialization
Destroyed by: Cell phones, fast food, Walmart, computers, crappy music...
These cities were beautiful guess that’s because it’s one culture of people white European. I remember well

Not Chicago 1942. The cab alone shows that.
Nice collection. The first picture can't be 1942 since the car advertisement on the bus is a '58 or '59 Rambler.
A great deal.of what we needed was found on.main street in.ossining. stores were open.on Thursday nights and it was wonderful
If you hadn't BB seen someone during the week chances were great you'd see them.on Thursday night.. bring main street.back
Woolworth Newberrys so much more. We were a real full fledged community
yep....Thursday night till nine...almost forgotten that....and little if anything open on Sunday...
Look at how clean the streets were, before plastic.
At 7:05 Chicago street shows two 1961+ model cars
Chicago 1942 if I read that right the vehicle is a newer. The general shape in the Greenwich New York farther back in the picture the cars are more rectangular which are lend itself to even a 1960s. I think it's a 1959 and sure somebody might have brand new service van the blue Chevy because that's 60 or 61. The pictures are great. Regardless of the time stamp is correct or not. Just throwing out when I believe is the right opinion based on observation. But in any case it's fabulous to have colored pictures from this era.
And I think the car behind the red truck is a mid 50s Chev, at :22. Oops it's a red truck.
I decided to throw those things out but I think you're right about the car
we knew our cars back then....today they all look like jellybeans.....
Very very nice and i dream
Color film in those days was expensive and slow, meaning you could only get outdoor shots and you had to really think about what you were shooting. But wow: The color in these photos bring a sense of relatability to this world. If only we could make cars exactly like those cars again…
17/02 23, Civic Pride everywhere !
Does anyone know that blue car that is parked that sees the rear behind the man who is crossing the street under the traffic light? at the time 6:10
Wow, look how beautiful it looks back in the day.
I share your lament.

The good old days...
Ice cream queen was flexing!
Amazed to learn from this and the three other History Lounge videos I watched (for the cars, really) that there were no Black folks around in the 1950s.
at first they were mostly invisible...except in the entertainment industry....white folks going to black clubs was pretty common
That can't be Chicago in the 50's towards the end of the clip - there is a black 1961 Buick sitting there. Thanks for the videos though, it took me back to my younger days!
