i can't even skate parks they're so smooth. it's like i've been skating street so long that my body doesn't know what to do with itself if it's not constantly balancing & correcting and using all those little stabilizer muscles and constantly adjusting to every little bump and crack. it's almost like my body lives in a constant state of anticipation of rough terrain. i can't even flatground ollie on nice surfaces, it's like i NEED something to ollie over/up/down and the run up has to feel like rough shit for me to get off the ground. even popping my tail off something smooth feels off in that little millisecond it's hitting the ground. it just sounds too "clean" popping off & landing on smooth concrete too.
you just need to grit your teeth and spend time on smooth ground bro. Being used to rough streets improves your overall skating... But in your case its the opposite. Learning to be comfortable on smooth ground will make such a difference in your overall skill.
I been going to the skatepark recently i adjusted to the smooth ground I never skate on smooth ground so its always a surprise like that so I feel more confident every time I go but I skate street spots 90% of the time I love it
Interesting, I skate 90 % crusty ditches and switched to 87a durometer wheels many years ago. So skate parks combined with those wheels is too sketchy, but its still fun. Just have to re calibrate the speed a bit
Skating streets really highlights a skaters abilities and creativity, its crazy how many good park skaters seem like beginners when approaching the streets
We recently got a small new concrete local, it’s really nice and I’ve seen/met a bunch of people out there. Actually posted it a couple vids ago. But my usual spot is a bus stop parking lot, it’s close to home, vacant and well lit at night, and fairly new so blacktop still nice. Just a bunch of curbs with a few sections I prepped for skating. I tend to go out solo late night
We have a couple good DIY parks here in Denver that can give you some of that funky feel. Those are some of my favorite parks to skate. I am definitely a park nerd though, I'm 37 and just looking to skate as long as I can and keep progressing. I prefer the predictability of parks for 90% of my skating, I do a small amount of street skating at night when I just need to get out and skate and the local parks with lights on are just too busy or there's probably sketchy shit going on there. Also, I suck so I'm not doing tricks down 6 stairs, doing anything on a handrail, and I can't get up onto most ledges out on the streets lol. Just skating around town has definitely made me a better skater though.
Have a good new year dude, thanks for helping some of us escape beginner purgatory. I thought I was a sellout because I stopped skating years ago, but the community is really supportive of guys like me.. hell, I'd say you guys have been supportive of me personally because sometimes people want me to just shut up and go away, so thanks. I don't wanna let anybody down who's ever invested in me. I'm not sure what confusion led to me not skating, but this has been a fun journey. And there's days where it feels like I'm progressing backwards... if I can cram some advice in here, it's to be patient with yourself sometimes. It's okay to be a beginner. It's skateboarding; noone is perfect, everyone falls. If you ever feel like you're being judged, it happens... just keep working harder. When I was younger, sometimes my friends would disappear for weeks, I'd learn kickflips, heelflips... they didn't know who I was lol. Within my first year of skating I had them. None of this comes particularly easy to me, either. Then they'd come around and waste my time again. It always coincided with a new video game coming out. Though I found it difficult to do (skate alone) because I grew up as an only child; Best thing you can ever focus on is your own stuff. At some point you might have to learn to skate alone, at least if you are serious and don't wanna sit around yawning with everyone... nowadays I take my mom with me everywhere. It kinda rules. When she's sitting at the park with me, I don't even care if she sees the tricks I do, I'm just glad to not be there alone. Also, one of the things I love about skating is all the cool stuff. I bought 2 cool hats last month, like 3 pairs of pants... chrome plated trucks. Don't be afraid to get decked out in skate gear lol. I used to try to get my grandma to make my pants tight before it was cool... but today I'm embracing some kinda corduroy skate pants with a elastic waistband and comfy loose fit. When they say, "it's about having fun" they mean, it's not about trying to look cool. Looking cool will come with skating well. Who was that skater who's concerned with looking cool all the time? Jeremy klein, he doesn't seem like a jerk but he always talks about how he has to look cool lol. No you don't. You can pin the "I'm a mess!" button to my lapel. I'm over it. I also went down a rabbit hole of 90's street skating fairly recently, and it was very interesting and entertaining to read, hear about, and see some of the videos from that time, and learn about some of the skaters, some who aren't still here because time... But street skating was definitely a product of that era. A lot of baggy pants, too.
I like skatepark ground a little bit better only because I can do a revert and dig my wheel into the ground. So satisfying... Also; I go to this newer park a lot that's set up like a baby sls-course. (Don't go there if you're gonna knock into a kid on a scooter) Then when I went to my local the other day, it felt like the whole park was slanting everywhere and popping felt crazy! I wasn't mad, it was just funny. I realized how pampered I was getting at the park.
You went to the real wilshire, and I learnt to throw down from watching resurrection lol. When I was a little kid, I used to beg my mom to move us to california. Oh well. Also I think I can probably lock into one of those tall ledges now... it won't go, but I'll slap the truck on it.
In my lifetime, grind stoppers were not only invented. But shoved onto every conceivable surface in the entire country. And they started cracking down on skaters and actually handing out fines and criminal charges to skaters for street skating spots. It sucks looking back, they effectively killed skating for so many years. And now i see street spots i could skate but i dont have the courage or will to get a criminal damages charge for waxing a fucking ledge owned by the council... RIP Australian street scene, atleast its still better than Japans strict rules.
That’s really rough. Here, in LA, skating is so massive that there’s always someone popping off the stoppers. I heard how strict Japan is. But never knew you guys had it so rough in Australia.
yeah i started skating long before these skateparks everywhere. when i go to one now the ground is just way too smooth. its very unnatural to be honest.
Sk18 parks is fun but gets boring fast or is crowded with kids Sk18 street spots is rad both hard and easy creative but it's hated by people that dont Sk8

Same issue I had at first. It felt strange, and I’d always slip and slide around, trying to skate parks. Felt like ice skating.

Learning anything on a handrail without ever learning it elsewhere first is wilddddd. Diff between pros and joes I guess.
It’s true I love listening to your stories because you have the experience For real 💪💚
Haven't even thought of that, I grew up skating the houston streets, tons of sketch. I kinda miss that, rarely go home though.

Noho the John West champion is looking different!
My favorite parks are rough when I'm not on the streets

I’m new to skating and am planning on getting lessons. I want to skate professionally as a street skater, how would I go pro?

and yea 100% do not get caught waxing the ground at a ledge spot you'll sent xD
Utterly dangerous and self centered behavior.
