They are reaching absolute perfection. These songs are incredibly technical and challenging, and they keep being better at playing and performing them ! it's insane, the talent and the skills that these musicians have.
I remember James saying this is the song of theirs he'd choose if alone on a deserted island and could only choose one song from their own discography. So yea, this song means a lot to him, I'msure. I can imagine why. Even at the point of this being written, James wanted a "better singer/vocalist" in the band so he could focus on guitar. This was also the first time he sang a song like this on record. Needless to say, James' vocals are the perfect match for the band.
Also really love how Kirk has been working in more free styles into his solos putting some twists on it, keeps that unique feeling every time you hear these songs, and its like going on a ride when he hits it as he goes off, just hanging on for the ride, then brings it back towards the end to where its familiar. Really adds something special to these live performances and keeping that feeling of seeing something for the first time where as so many bands just play it exactly like the original track. If we wanted just that, we could listen to it at home, but live its nice hearing it as if its something everyone is hearing for the first time.

Things not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly loss, this can't be real
I cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness, taking dawn
I was me, but now he's gone
No one but me
Can save myself
But it's too late
Now I can't think
Think why I should even try
Yesterday seems as though
It never existed
Death greets me warm
Now I will just say goodbye
