I’ve loved this song from the first time I heard it on the radio. … maybe around 1970, by the group Everything Is Everything, which was the name Jim Pepper gave his group back then. His sax playing is really fantastic. This is the only Native American chant ever recorded. As already mentioned, it was a peyote chant. Great selection, John, thanks for sharing it. Thanks, Harri, for the reaction.

Jim Pepper, tenor sax man, was a Native American from Oregon who moved to New York City in the mid-60s and was at the forefront of fusion jazz. On this song he's playing with Larry Coryell, often considered the godfather of fusion guitar. Billy Cobham is on the drum kit. Chuck Rainey (Steely Dan) is on bass. Witchi Tai To is a peyote ritual chant of wellness and oneness with nature. Thanks Harri for reacting to this landmark recording (1971).

I'm a huge fan of Jazz Fusion and also love Native American history. So, hearing this cool tune from Jim Pepper for the very first time made me quite happy! Love the song and look forward to discovering more of his work. And that is indeed a fine band playing with him on the record.
      Thanks for the selection, John!

Jim Pepper's version of 'Witch Tai To' is certainly a great submission and mighty fine music from the 70s (I think). Terrific submission and review. Bravo!

Some other good versions of the song are by the group Oregon & Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek. Of course Jim is great too.

There must be quite a few versions of this by Jim Pepper. I first heard it in 1972 and I rarely heard that version again. All of them are good.

I think they did a cover version. I believe the original was recorded by Pepper’s group Everything Is Everything.

@@iandowney4630 I like the way Brewer and Shipley did it , because the lyrics are a bit clearer and i can understand it . I have the B&S album, and every now and then i'll spin it.

@@captainmoretokin2172 I’ve never heard their version. I’ve read the lyrics to the chant, but I don’t think anyone can tell what they mean as they are a chant. I did love “One Toke Over The Line”, however.
