I'm stuck at home with the dreaded man flu so I got the chance to binge watch all of the older videos. Wow what a beautiful project done with a lovely team and charming host. I kept wanting to hear about the mysterious glass house that used to hide the less attractive servants wing. Obviously at this stage you wouldn't build something new with so much work needed on the existing structure. But is there a dream in years to come to reinstate the conservatory? Bravo guys!
You're Saint Hopwood for what you are doing What you are doing with the Old Hall I hope one day to meet you but be prepared to be hugged from this old lady who has loved the Old Hall for 30 years Massive love Christine
Hopwood, I am so impressed by what you and the volunteers are doing! It blows my mind all the good that is coming out of the process of renovating Hopwood Hall. Thank you, thank you for having chosen to dedicate yourself to this project!
Hopwood, your work ethic to restore your ancestors home is very impressive. You should be very proud of yourself for your dedication to the cause! And I happened to be very proud of your first effort in woodworking . It was so similar to the model you were duplicating - don’t sell yourself short by thinking it could be only used as a coaster!
This was so interesting & impressive! I can’t believe I almost missed it over the holidays!! All the best for a successful 2024 at Hopwood Hall in your important restoration! Cheers.
Don’t underestimate your abilities and skill building in this amazing wood carving art. You and other volunteers seem to be strongly drawn to it. Not only have you increased interest in heritage restoration/preservation, but literally you are creating future artisans to sustain this monumental project! What an achievement Hopwood for you and your volunteers!
Definitely use it! It's your creation for your ancestors'home! In the future, it will be a point of interest for generations to come. Nothing needs to be perfect for it to have great value and beauty. It's beautiful because YOU made it. ❤❤❤
As you were showing your completed wood carving with the satisfaction and joy of accomplishment on your face the words Hope Wood hall came across my mind . Kudos
❤ It's actually quite wonderful that the carvings (and other elements) are being recreated and renewed by the community. It will add to the heart, story and legacy of the building to see it done this way. There's something grandiose about a building that is a work of art funded in the past by wealth and pedigree. However, there's something even more positive and beautiful about that work of art being cared for and rebuilt by people who are there as community 😊
Amazing, just love watching the skills of these people, renovating & bringing this grand old lady back to her former glory. Thank you Hopwood, for your pride in your ancestry, & your ancestral home.
That's the spirit! See a need, learn a skill from a master, jump in, do a great job. The dedication I see from you, the (other) volunteers, the students, master crafts people, Historic England, etc. is awe-inspiring. Merry/Happy Christmas to you all. I ordered your book.
My Uncle, whom passed away many years ago, tried to find places that he could take his advanced students. He was a professor of architecture here in the states. Maybe you can find some apprentice students at some college that might be able to help you find out more info on the carvings and on other artifacts around the mansion. And maybe be able to help recreate some items. Hey I think you did darn good for a first time carving. Great work!!!!! I would love to come help, but it is above my pay grade. I just enjoy watching you guys bring the place back to life. 😊😊😊
A wood carving CNC machine will be your best friend during this renovation! lol. Nothing wrong with using the technologies of our amazing modern times to add that appeal to the story of Hopwood Hall!!
Hopwood!!! Your "coaster" looks amazing! What a joy it must be to have that amazing Heritage instructor to work with! It looks like soooooo much fun! 🥰
15.47 - That looks like it is a depiction of a knight with the holy grail. This episode was just wonderful. You are so encouraging and passionate. I'm sure it will feel emotional to look at the restored panels, knowing your ancestors looked at them and now your own work is a part of them for future generations.
Please do an episode on the weather proofing of the entire structure. Is it coming along or done? About the carvings and the failed ones, yes they should be sold as coasters or similar.
hi hoppy, im glad you are learning to carve, perhaps it my be calming for you. your castle is beautifully being restored with help from the best volunteers, neighbors and friends. these videos help us see just how wonderful people can be with a common goal
This is what blows my mind on such amazing historical buildings, the architecture, inside and out, the size and scale on how the flow, the artistic minds who designed so many things from the chimney design, the window designs, each room and the designs for singular purposes, library, bedrooms, dining rooms, halls so on so forth and how the craftsmens such fine and remarkable skills made delightful fixtures, fittings and features for ceilings and floors, walls and fireplaces, furniture and soft furnishings, the designs on the gardens and lands to buildings like this. People just pass by, glance and admire what they may briefly see, peice by piece, bit by bit. The smallest of details are the most important like these the intricate woodcraft pieces, make up the bigger most stunning impressive finishes. Truly remarkable. The dedication your giving this fantastic building and the step by step videos you show to regain and get it back to its original glory, then will those who have watched your videos truly appreciate what it takes to have such a historical building then and more so now. Wonderful ❤
It's such a shame that you lost the original carvings, but how fantastic that you are learning new crafts and will be able to replace them with help, of course. Looking forward to reading your book which is going to be one of my christmas presents. Love from South Australia 🇦🇺 ❤️
Thanks Heather! Yes learning the crafts is the silver-lining. That's amazing to hear about the book- I hope you enjoy it! Merry Christmas to South Australia!! 😀
It is quite wonderful to think back on your exposure to all these crafts. You must feel great. Have a lovely holiday Hopwood with family and friends. Always a treat to see you.
Nice job on the carving, Hopwood!! You should do a drawing with your Patreon supporter for your first carving ! (When you get really good at carving, how about a small wolverine carving for a corner of a paneled room?)
Very interesting lady, I would love to know a bit more about her journey carving wood. My farther was a lead worker and made rain water gutters, boxes and down pipes for many historic homes across the UK.
Yes Saena is incredible. She has a website where you can learn more about her: www.thewoodcarvingstudio.co.uk/. How interesting about your father- I wonder if he ever did any work at Hopwood Hall
Hopwood, I find it amazing that you've taken on this passion project. Your ancestors must be watching over you and be very proud. I also think it's great that you're learning all these trades while bringing the Hall back to life. Much love from Canada ❤❤
Another great skill to learn. The wood carvings in Hopwood Hall look amazing. Sad some stolen or vandalised. Great that new generations are learning the skills needed to re-create these carvings etc, and able to restore our historic past. New carvings look great.
Thanks so much Sheila - It's inspiring to think about that. Especially since they are fun, well-paying, creative jobs that will open a lot of doors for young students or people looking for a new path in life
Dusting is one thing but..replicating wood carving is beyond restoration ~ no words to praise your loving dedication to tackle anything ~ working on wood is a blessing ~ the wood carving you did is richly done Hopwood ~ Bravo 😊
Good to see a new post! You continue to work on more and more aspects of the renovation! The wood carving class with the expert teaching is a wonderful way to approach those repairs. I hope the hall is wind and water tight, or getting close to becoming so. I suppose you are preparing for your holiday party! Hope all goes well!
To learn this is Amazing! Your ancestors would be pleased to see you taking this journey, from what you thought was a fairy tale to reality. And.. love that you speak humbly about all of it.
It sure has been an unexpected journey! Haha I never would've thought I would be wood carving. But here I am learning and enjoying it so much. Thank you
Your carving looks great!!! This is such an awesome skill to learn. Love that you are going to learn how to create and restore the carvings in the Hall! All the best to you. Such fun to see all the progress you all are making with the restoration. The carvings in this room are amazing and so detailed ... You all have a first class instructor in teaching you all how to do these skills. So nice to see young people interested in doing/learning to carve lovely shapes in wood. You are doing a great job Hopwood! Love it!
Love the tree and decor! Philip you are so sweet and funny. Was excited to hear the Judy worked in NOLA for Mardi Gras company. We live on Miss. Gulf Coast. Merry Christmas to both of you with love!
Inspiring. Coventry Cathedral was refurbished on 70's and 80's, and some of the new carvings are unapologetically modern and the result of design competitions. After all, history isn't static. Perhaps a panel of some people chasing pigeons?
I really like this suggestion, and especially with respect to furnishings and art. Some rooms could include contemporary art on the rough brick walls for example. I already donated an art piece to Hopwood Hall from 1493; perhaps Andy Warhol Campbell's Soup 1985 or similar next? What say Hopwood? Richard
Hopwood, does the house, or your ancestors, have a connection to the Tudor family? One of the flowers you showed looked like, or similar to, a Tudor rose. Though I'm American, I had some British ancestry a very long time ago, and I am a huge fan of the Tudor period. I LOVE Tudor architecture too!! Love seeing your ancestral home being restored. ❤
New subscriber here. Such a beautiful place is Hopwood. You did an amazing piece of work on the wooden circle and flower detail. For a first try, wow. I think it is worth using in the restoration. Can't wait to see more. Love from Adelaide, Australia.
Love watching this; seeing the desire to save many historical places and focusing on how and what can be done to restore things that were missing. Its cool.
Well done Hopwood, you did so well, it seems there is so much to do re the amount of carvings, thank goodness you have Heritage England to support your task, I saw you learn to create plaster mouldings and now carvings, very inspiring 😊
Always so exciting to see your updates, Hopwood! So interesting to see the woodcarving process and get some understanding of the time that went into all the details that make up the hall. I love your flower, you did great!
38.4k Hi Hopwood having watched you from the start im amazed just how hands on youve been with the restoration ...... youre becoming a real " Jack of all Trades !!! " well done .
Nice work. And when the medallions will be so high up on the ceiling, no one's going to notice if it's not absolutely perfect, unless they get a pair of binoculars to see it. Make your mark and use it!
Wow, you are so fortunate to have found Saena and gain new skills through her training. I am guessing most of the wood used in Hopwood Hall was originally taken from the adjacent property. Did the Hopwood family sometimes use exotic woods for the carvings? Are you able to figure out what kind of wood was used in the original carvings so you can reproduce them accurately? - Bryan from Hudsonville.
Thanks Bryan- yes many are oak which is why they have survived through the centuries so well. The surrounding Hopwood Woods has many acres of woodlands so someday it might be interesting to get back to utilizing fallen trees from there
You might not think your rosette is up to the standards of the others, you should really find a space for it. After all, it’s some significance as it’s made by a Hopwood ancestor.
I was watching this video and starting thinking about the 360 VR tour you did, and I had the idea that I should try to do that at my college's photography gallery. So I just watched some videos about how to do it, and it looks pretty complicated. Can I ask how you did it? Did you get a certain camera and do it yourself?
Wow, that looks great Hopwood and to say you've never done any carving before, i think that flower was very close to the original. Not sure I could achieve that.
Congrats Hopwood on showing us another aspect of bringing back craftsmanship! I must ask 2 questions. I know you were learning, but how long did you spend carving your flower? Also how long would an experienced craftsman take to carve one? Cheers & happy holidays!
Thanks George! It took me about a day & a half on my first one but I was practicing and learning during that time too. I would imagine an experienced carver could do it in a few hours
Hopwood, do you really think that future visitors looking up at that high ceiling would be able to tell that your carving (which I think looks just fine) was a first attempt? I don't know anybody whose eyes are that sharp!
haha I'm not sure but everything that permanently goes back into a Grade II* listed building has to be approved so I'm not sure if my first attempt would be allowed lol 😂
