Again, please PLEASE make a longer version of the ending theme and slap it on the front of your videos with cuts from the show. That tune is too good for it to only be 5 seconds long.

I didn’t get into shmups until my 30’s. I’m god awful at them but they have two things that keep me coming back: bangin music and that “just one more try” feeling that a ton of genres don’t have

I feel like First-Person shooters killed off a lot of people's public perception of shmups as "shooters", combined with bullet hells redefining shmup gameplay the same way metroidvanias redefined castlevania, so traditional 2d horizontal and vertical shmups sorta became a dying genre as a result of both of those things.

Life force was a must have for the original Nintendo NES. I loved the art work on the cartridge as well. The beautiful sprites and colors are associated with the classic shoot em ups. Today I’m fortunate enough to own a Neo Geo Aes along with a multi cart and if you want to see the arcade shoot em ups come to life on the screen, then that console takes the cake.

My first shmup was Terra Cresta. 1985, at a YMCA in Garden City KS. We would go for swimming lessons and my mom would give me a couple of bucks to spend in their arcade while my sister finished her classes. I couldn't get enough of it, and when I found out that there were more games like it, I was hooked.

Awesome vid man, shmups have aleays been one of my favorite genres. I played them a ton in the arcade and at home. I'm a Toaplan, Thunder Force, and R-Type fan, but have classics like Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga in my collection as well. Lately though, I've been trying to pick up the shmups I missed on the Genesis, Saturn, and 360. Right now it seems like the shmup may be making a comeback w/all the new stuff available like the new Raiden games, R-Type Final II, Battle Garegga Rev 2016, Cave bullet hell games, Psikyo Collections, plus all of the classic Neo Geo shmups available digitally. A lot of it isn't original hardware for the classics, but it's a cost effective way to enjoy some classics.

Sol feace, eihander, and axelay are also great examples on how great the sound tracks are. There is just something addicting about shoot em ups especially bullet hell. I have a couple of them on the switch and love playing them on the go.

I started off with R-Type for Sega Master System and Steel Empire for the Genesis, they made me very curious in the genre. I then I picked up Thunder Force 4 and absolutely fell in love with it. I practiced until I finally beat it a few months ago! I'm still very new to the genre, but there is nothing else gameplay-wise quite like a shooter and definitely took me through a wild ride. I'll be looking forward to exploring what this style of game has to offer!

Shooters were what pulled me into the retro gaming black hole. Specifically, realizing how much latency plays a part in many current ports, especially on Switch. Now I have a Saturn/Super Famicom/Mega Drive shooter collection that's worth more than any other asset I own, I don't know if that's bad or good. But hey, I can play Sengoku Blade with low latency & Super Aleste, so whatever. Buying a rotatable monitor with .5 frame input delay was a very worthwhile investment, tate mode really is where it's at. And I think you chose the exact right game for beginners, it's perfect in that regard. I particularly loved the port of Thunder Force AC in the Sega AGES lineup.

I look forward to your videos every week for - among other reasons - your great perspective on retro games, and boy did this one deliver. I've always found the shoot em ups to be graphically appealing but so damn difficult (my reflexes must just be poor... I'm the guy that struggles with Super Metroid wall jumping). :D

X-Multiply is really cool. I have been grabbing the heavy hitters but they wreck the wallet for sure. I LOVE shooters!! I’m not the greatest at them, but I love them! They have some of the best music, graphics, art style, and parallax scrolling; than many other games. I know I’d get better at them if I had more time to play them. But that’s a bit difficult with two very small kids....

The SNES Gradius III is still my favorite shoot 'em up after all these years. Thanks to BitHead1000 I got introduced to Soldier Blade on the TG16, and that is one heck of vertical shoot 'em up.

My favorite genre next to castlevania and jrpg’s. I was a snes kid and got hooked with axelay, rtype and super Aleste. Since then i’ve played many more on the other - more suitable - consoles. I love it we are having some kind of revival with many shmups getting released on switch and ps4. M2 anyone? ;) . At the moment zanac X zanac is kicking my butt 😊

Today I finished gradius for the NES, level 3 is the most difficult, after that it becomes a game for children.
Now, if we talk about shoot em ups, the parents of the genre were defender, galaga, zaxxon, xeivious and space invaders, then came the resounding success of gradius, And from then on the formula continues to be refined until it reaches r-type, thunder force, Star soldier and well, I think that in the 90s shoot em ups reach their limit
Ikaruga and chaos field are the last great exponents of the genre, so we could say that shoot em ups die at the beginning of the century.

@@Blueflag04 Try to go for the heads above, always around at least up to the middle of the level, because if you go through the middle you will have heads shooting up and down, it is impossible to get out of there.
Another thing is that after overcoming the heads phase there will be a boss pre-phase where there will be the typical spheres that launch mini spheres as shields, it is necessary to have the laser there. And outside of that the boss is the same ship with the blue-red nucleus and it is very easy to defeat it if you know where the bullets are going.

I love shooters. I'm no expert at playing them, but I have pulled many 1cc finishes in my time. Nothing quite screams "arcade" like shooters and beat 'em ups.
When I was younger, I favored the vertical scrollers, but as an adult, I definitely play more horizontal games. Gradius II, Gate of Thunder, Cotton 2, DeathSmiles... though I do have more than enough vertical games still.
I usually have friends that aren't into shooters try Galactic Attack, Blazing Lazers, Gate of Thunder, or Final Soldier as a primer. Those are all pretty accessible, and make people feel like "I'm not bad at this!" Plus, anyone who likes Galactic Attack will love Soukyugurentai!

  • @richfutrell753

The most difficult shoot em up is Space Invaders, because it is simply impossible to win (far as I know).
Also, it is one of the most important video games of all time, not just because it launched an entire genre (yeah, I know about Space War, but the average American kid didn't exactly have access to the college mainframe), but because Miyamoto recalls that he didn't care about video games at all until he saw Space Invaders in a restaurant.
Also, any American using the word "shmup" should be at least arrested if not deported.
As for console games, I can only really speak about 1942, Section Z, Xevious, Gradius, Stinger, Life Force, Abadox, Super R Type, and Gradius III.
They all kicked my butt, and I loved them all.

As a Nintendo kid ( I begged for a genesis, but ya know, you can only have one as kid usually) I only recently have been getting into the Genesis library. Played through Musha, and really really enjoyed it. I even had some hair left at the end, despite pulling so much of it out trying to finish the last level.

Only played Blazing Lasers for TurboGrafx on Wii U Virtual Console as I was curious about Shoot Em Ups and TurboGrafx games and yeah I was impressed even besides the difficulty. The power ups in that game really made me question which I wanted to use to take out enemies in the 7 stages I've gotten through (many save states have been used because I'm always questioning if I can get through the stages or not, not thought much of Turbo Buttons though but I appreciate the idea (could be a good video idea I think Turbo Buttons on controllers).
The genre has a lot of interesting elements that have surprised me just like others with vehicle core elements and arcade challenge.
Much better experience with it then garbage 'however many games in 1' experience I've had in the past with them. Have yet to explore more but I enjoy the Vertical ones so far, not tried any Horizontal as I always wonder about the difference in perspective and TV viewing angle.
Not played any Touhou games either or Bullet Hell Shoot Em Ups but had Bullet Hell experiences in 3D games before for Boss battles. And I assume Cute Em Ups are just a visual difference not anything gameplay related right?
I've always enjoyed ship sections in games so the Ratchet 2 ship levels and Star Fox Zero/Command have been fun to play through but the 2D Shoot Em Ups have impressed me just like Lightgun/On Rail Games have with Rez Infinite and to a more weirder extent Galgun (yes Inti Creates has made better but it's my introduction to them at least). XD

Who doesn't love a good run & gun, blast every thing in sight, shoot-em up? They can be great fun and instant gratification, you don't have clear your calendar to play them, you can drop in, do a level or two or do the whole thing, if you have a free afternoon (wife & kids away for the day) :-))

After learning so much more about gaming, I think your usual "Shooters" do seem to have rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. I like me my good Shooters myself, but for many, you're right, "1st Person Shooter" is like a dirty word. Then because of that, a lot of other shooter-type games and genres kind of got overlooked and/or went down in some people's minds.
I mean, shooting things in a game seems so simple, and it really is, but there are so many kinds. From your usual "Shooter" games in 1st or 3rd person, to Shoot Em Ups/Shmups, to Rail Shooters, to Gallery Shooters, to Run & Gun...there's so many ways to shoot things in game form!
