He has mechanical filtration. The filter pad between the sump chambers. the physical structure of the chaetomorpha, which can trap large particulates, and a protein skimmer. Once this tanks detritus reaches a stage where it can not biodegrade any further, it will settle in the sump or the DT.
Well a chaetomorpha blanket is mechanical filtration, it's one made of plant fiber. But it is also an active biomass whose growth out competes most other photosynthetic organisms and serves as an excellent host to various detritivores, micro-invertebrates, and bacteria; thus it is such an excellent export method and one of the most natural methods. Great video, and a nice review of the underlying biological theory (for the nutrient cycles). But the distinction I would draw is: it doesn't have to be inorganic to be mechanical
That chaeto has grown so much from that little ball you started with. The Triton method is a very interesting way to run your system. I'm excited to learn more about it.
That’s the exact same reason I quit using mechanical filtration a while ago. I noticed my acans weren’t near as happy when I was using filter socks so I quit using them. I also keep bristle worms mixed in with my dragon breath in the sump
I also read you don't need mechanical filters, but most reefers do, I think because the mechanical filter traps the bigger particles before it gets to your equipment hence making you gear last longer.
Great vid, thanks. I assume when you say no mechanical filtration, I assume the filter pad on the output from chamber 1 - 2 is just fine enough to catch bits of cheato that break off and not end up in the display, and allow smaller particles for coral to consume.
First, let me congrat for your Tank and all your reef background!!! A lot of experience and excellent tips, very appreciated for share with us and please still sharing this, don’t get me wrong!! But this is my personal opinion, and I think that such black sponge is a mechanical filtration, maybe you can put the algae inside of a net. Is just an idea in order to have a complete Triton method.
How does a tank cycle with the Triton method? I guess you are reliant on nitrification from the bacteria that lives in the sand and rock? Does this in turn limit the amount of fish stock you can have? I know cheato will deal with nitrates and phosphates but can it turn ammonia into nitrite? I guess I need to read up on it but the tank is looking great, I do love the simplicity of your method too and by the way it looks like that bacter clean is working a charm.
So how do you clean your filtration all that waste that’s built up in there how do you get it out. You can’t just leave it there forever it will build up waste wouldn’t it. I’m just curious I’m trying to learn. You must have to remove all the poop and waste in there can’t just sit there forever. Can it
Okay so when ever I get a new ball of chato it grows very well BUT then as soon as I take some out so it can grow back again it dies off ? It's the second time its happened to me now?
I see. The tank has turned around for the better! Will you be doing a video on the move of the tank when the time comes? Im curious to see your approach. As to if you will keep the sand or use new how much water volume you will take with you etc. Ive done the move more time than i care to admit. Its stressful but at the same time kinda exciting.
I use a filter sock only when doing a tank cleaning aka sand bed stir and turkey baster on rock work and only for about 2 hours. this is done every two weeks. My refugium is full of feather caulerpa and dragons tongue algae. But I do not use Triton products, just kalkwasser and coral/fish feeding.
That sponge is so the Chaeto won’t go into the skimmer chamber. If you take a real close look at that sponge it’s super coarse. The frozen food easily flys by it.
I consider skimmers mechanical filtration as well.

Super fantastic video sir... Thanks again sir...
Good info and great content, thanks for sharing your success..

Filter socks are a way of controlling nutrients. I didn't use them until recently. If my phosphates were lower I would ditch them.
Protein skimmers are definitely mechanical filtration
Nice big Skimmer .... and sponge
I also read you don't need mechanical filters, but most reefers do, I think because the mechanical filter traps the bigger particles before it gets to your equipment hence making you gear last longer.
I have my 50g mode currently cycling. Super excited for my first reef tank
so you don't have to siphon anything that may be trapped under the chaeto or does it consume it all?
Great vid, thanks.

how much no3 and po4 in your water. how do u balance out import (how much feed a day) vs export thru cheto only
Is that sponge in the refugium? That would be considered mechanical filtration too.
The proofs there, I mean look at that bad boy goni tank going strong!!
😂
I feel that with that with your really small fish stocking that you have a small bio load is easy to manage. Either way great looking tank!

Nice theory something to think about 👍

What light are you using again?

It will get broken down with the pods in the Chaeto
He keeps his sand bed very clean as well as his sump. In doing so extracting waste.
Tell me the name of that plant you have no tank I tried to find it on the website .
Okay so when ever I get a new ball of chato it grows very well BUT then as soon as I take some out so it can grow back again it dies off ? It's the second time its happened to me now?
Looking at your firefish brought sad memory that my purple firefish died because it got sucked into gyre pump. :-(
amino acids are organic compounds . .. . you have your fuge before your skimmer... the aminos leaving your fuge go into your skimmer
It looks like you are still using your protein skimmer, and why not polish your water even more?
Give me your honest opinion, would you purchase a exocite marine overflow 20" for a 70g build?
I always thought a protein skimmer was a mechanical filter? Curious
To a certain extent yes but it won’t capture the big stuff thus in my opinion not considered that since it’s job is to catch proteins.
I see. The tank has turned around for the better! Will you be doing a video on the move of the tank when the time comes? Im curious to see your approach. Refuge light died last nite what's a good one that wint break the bank .
Illumagic fresh water version.
So I can use java moss and snails as a filter in a fresh water tank?
How about for sps corals?
They grow more like the goniopara
i just had a quick question. What tank is this and when the sump is it. Because this looks like a sleek tank.
Sorry WHAT sump is it
That chaeto ball is huge Antonio! 😁 I’m curious if the water quality would be on a large tank with large bioload of fish & corals. Thanks for sharing
I will be testing that soon
Yes it's a given Triton Method no pre filter. By the way underneath the chaeto is not getting any light so what you saw was die off not food.
Not die off it’s detritus. I turn the ball over every 3 days. Even before the Chaeto the detritus would collect in that spot.
Man those Mode aquariums are nice 👍
Can I substitute and use an Algae Scrubber instead?
Not if you are doing 100% triton
Been without socks and filters for a good 6 months now
I have two filter socks in but I have not changed them or cleaned them in well a year. Water just overflows onwards in the sump.
How is the KH director going?
Loving it
i did same method but phosphate kept raising. so I fixed gfo.
My tank wont stay clear if I dont have mechanical filtration.. But I also dont have a sump either so I kinda have no choice.
Will trident method work with an algae reactor?
Can I place my skimmer before the macro chamber.?
Not if it’s triton method
Can I place the skimmer inside the macro chamber, maybe off the corner? That will give me 20% of my total water volume for Triton... in theory.
Is the black sponge not mechanical filtration? Tank is looking great.
Not at all if you look closely at is it super course. Frozen food easily goes threw it. That is there to catch big pieces of Chaeto
Man for some reason i cant grow chaeto, i am dealing with dinos though so maybe thats why.
Hard to say. Sometimes light is a big player
Dose marine grade iron in your refugium cheato loves it
Are you selling your tank? Someone has a very similar tank on the forms for sale? Looks exactly like yours!
what fuge light?
I use a filter sock only when doing a tank cleaning aka sand bed stir and turkey baster on rock work and only for about 2 hours.
this is done every two weeks. My refugium is full of feather caulerpa and dragons tongue algae. But I do not use Triton products, just kalkwasser and coral/fish feeding.
How has it worked so far? I. Currently going through dinos and thought about that.
I am so jealous of your cheato, mine just won't grow
😊
Dose iron in your refugium. It will grow

A skimmer is mechanical filtration
Protein skimmer is mechanical filtration
To a certain extent yes. But will not bind up big particulates thus in my opinions not mechanical
Your cheato is no different to a sock or filter wool! Lol
ummm skimmer . .. ....
Lol this dude has sponges in there n says no mechanical lolll stop it dude. Cause ur not using a sock or floss, doesnt mean u aint doin mechanical
That sponge is so the Chaeto won’t go into the skimmer chamber. If you take a real close look at that sponge it’s super coarse. The frozen food easily flys by it.
wow
Bullweak
