I just recently started listening to Nettspend. I genuinely like his music, it's pretty good. I feel really good when I listen to his music. I will point out that I am not tapped into the underground scene like that. I don't use Twitter, and I am occasionally on Instagram. I do however spend over 50 hours on RUclips and over 20 hours on RUclips Music.
Hip-hop has been extremely stagnant for a long time. They can change the sound, they can change the fashion, they can change the skin colour, city or nationality, but it doesn't change the fact that most rappers still only talk about the same three or four subjects over and over again. It used to be funny, but now it's just sad. The reason Kendrick Lamar made such an impact is because he raps about a genuinely diverse and original array of themes and ideas. Then you have all these new rappers coming up and people are like "IS THIS THE NEW KENDRICK??!!" - NOPE. Because Kendrick wasn't the new Kendrick, Kendrick was just NEW. He was ORIGINAL. People think they can take a shortcut to originality, by copying someone else's originality, or by changing their hair or hiring some whacky producer to fiddle around with the mix and make it sound more experimental. Whereas people like Kendrick, Ride, 2Pac, Eminem etc had to work very hard to be original, to change the formula of what we consider a rapper to be. They didn't do it by following a trend or making superficial gestures, they did it by baring their souls and by not settling for passable mediocrity. The "next big thing" is not gonna look like someone we've seen before, it's not gonna be one of these new autotune rip off rappers or one of these certified gangster guys that is huge for two years, sells our arenas and then disappears. It's gonna be an actual artist who lives and breathes their work.
