Seeing the Aleutians by Ferry - the MV Tustumena, July 2019

  • Jon, Joy, and Paul Sharpe took the MV Tustumena from Homer to Dutch Harbor and back in early July 2019. This was a "bucket list" item for all of them for decades. Admittedly, the weather was phenomenal, so what you see in this video may not represent accurately the conditions someone might encounter if they book a trip in the future. At one point the Captain/Pilot on the ferry got on the mic to tell us that in 15 years he "could count on one hand the number of times he'd seen Frosty Peak that clearly." That was the story for much of the voyage. They told us before we went that the rain is usually horizontal, to bring lots of dramamine, and that the Tustumena is famous for rolling with the waves. We ended the trip with all of our dramamine unopened (four packages of it). The Tustumena does roll quite a bit, even in a moderate swell (got to 10 feet or so) on a beautiful day, but it didn't bother us - we were too focused on looking at the scenery. We slept on the deck on the way out to Dutch Harbor, but on the return we booked a four bunk stateroom. The round trip fare for an adult was $812, and for a senior it was $615 (approximately...can't remember exactly). The stateroom, one-way was $502. The Tustumena is scheduled to be replaced, perhaps next year. And, of course, the whole state ferry system could be drastically reduced by Governor Dunleavy who is dealing with a very difficult budget situation. Both of those circumstances made us decide to take this trip now, rather than wait. It may not exist much longer.

    This is my dream trip! I will have traversed the Inside Passage three times by ferry by May 2023. [ My first trip was in 1979.] In 1945 my father was stationed in Cold Bay while serving in the US Navy. He and other Americans trained Soviet naval personnel in the use of leased American landing vessels, mine sweepers, and subchasers. I'd love to see what he saw on his trip aboard LCI 524.

    Hi I visited the Aleutian Chain and Dutch Harbor when I was a Teenager. Thank you for the trip down Memory Lane. We took a VW camper on a separate ship up through the Pacific NW rainforest and camped out. I just wanted to say how friendly everyone I met on the ship, and how nice the crew was to a Teenager like me.
    The Locals were very nice to me too. I think that I was the only person who ever had a non alcoholic drink in that bar in Dutch Harbor, ha ha!

    I have taken this route as well. It was the trip of a lifetime. I had 50/50 bad and good weather. Some of it was white knuckle for someone not used to it, but the scenery more than made up for it. You are lucky to have the weather you did.

    Very nicely done.. I worked at Dutch Harbor 2005-2015 for Westward Seafoods and Icicle Seafoods some times flying in (Westward) Icicle was by 325 ft Gordon Jensen processor out of Seattle very much like your Ferry ride. My thumbnail picture here is me on dry land after 9 months at sea..the guy taking the picture was laughing so hard I could hardly walk on solid ground!! Thanks for the Video Loved It!!

    Hi Jon, Joy, and Paul! We watched your film with great interest. We plan to repeat your route in July 2020
    I have questions for you. 1. Do I need to make a ferry reservation from Hоmer? 2. Is food included in the ticket price?

    • @PaulSharpebassist
      @PaulSharpebassist  4 года назад +3

      Here is the deal...because of massive budget cuts the current governor made to the state budget of Alaska (there is a recall effort underway) the future of the Alaska Marine Highway System is in great doubt. The Tustumena itself is considered a very old boat - "Rusty Tusty" is its nickname...it used to be called "Trusty Tusty." It was scheduled to be replaced last summer or this coming summer, but because of budget cuts its all up in the air. That was part of the reason we decided to do this trip - I was seriously concerned that the option would go away this past summer. You'll have to call the Alaska Marine Highway to get the latest scoop in what the prospects are for travel down the Aleutians this coming summer. You can make reservations online, though the site can be confusing, so it may be best just to call and make them that way (if they are taking them). Food is not included in the ticket price, and it is the only dining room on the Alaska State Ferry system currently that employs waiters and waitresses. The food costs are surprisingly cheap. It is simple fare, always palatable, and sometimes quite good.

    What a well made video. This is not the weather I would expect!!!!!!!!!!! It seemed like the first half of your trip was on the peninsula?? I was surprised to see so many forests. I am fascinated with the beauty of the area. Have you done the Inside passage. Except for the glaciers this looks more beautiful. Is that your son with you?

      It’s actually my video (I’m the 50 year old man in the video). My parents are the 80 year old couple in the video. We did the Inside Passage when I was 9 years old as a family. Both trips were stunning…but this, because of the remoteness was more special, I think.

    Hey Paul, were passengers allowed access to the auto deck while the ferry was in motion? Also do you know much about the ship on land in Kodiak near the ferry dock? I heard that it is Liberty Ship from Wikipedia, one of four surviving today. If I'm being unclear, you can see the ship behind the ferry in the last minute of your video.

    • @PaulSharpebassist
      @PaulSharpebassist  4 года назад +1

      Patrick Hardy I do not believe we were allowed to go below decks. We didn’t have a car, so didn’t go there. The Liberty ship in Kodiak is a fish processing facility.

      Not allowed for safety reasons. A wierdo once tried to unlock a ferry door in a Long Island ferry and State Troopers plus the Coast Guard were called. The sister ship came over just in case. These ferry boat crews are very professional and calm when unexpected events occur. We had to put on life preserves and the State Police had a spare life preserver for this nice Puerto Ricsn lady's dog. She said that she grew up swimming but she was afraid for her dog who was a fifty pound dog that she ran to her car and pulled him out when she heard the alarm.

    Very nice video. Question...do you have any regrets about no getting a cabin? And any issues sleeping on the floor of the solarium as far as disruptions, etc. Thanks, Mike

    • @PaulSharpebassist
      @PaulSharpebassist  3 года назад +1

      No! No regrets. We had a cabin on the return trip. They were sold out on the outbound trip, so not an option. Frankly, the noise of the engine up there is impressively loud. Imagine an incessant low rumble. It is hard to have a conversation over it. You have to yell. It has a white noise effect while sleeping. I used earplugs, which was a good move. I liked sleeping in the open air. Another plus - the shower is up there too. People were very respectful of others in the solarium too. No noise from them, at least on our trip. There was a bit of nostalgia in it too - that’s how we always slept when we travelled on the ferry when I was a kid. Of course, the cabin was nice for the privacy, and a real mattress! I’m glad we experienced both.

      @@PaulSharpebassist Thanks for the reply! Another question....could you have slept in the forward lounge area or movie lounge or is it not allowed? And did the person in the tent have any issues? I noticed only one tent directly behind the solarium and I did not see any of the plastic lounge chairs that people sleep on. Instead I only saw chairs that are securely attached to the deck and non-moveable. My wife and I have reservations leaving on July 13th for the round trip. We have both done the Inside Passage on the ferry but on other larger ferries like the Columbia and Malaspina where there is a much larger solarium area. Thanks again!

      @@michaelepiscopo2538 the tent blew like crazy all the time! I felt bad for them. Yes...the chairs on deck are not sleepable. The floor is...and there is an area in the front of the solarium that is nice and flat and off the ground. If you can snag that it would be perfect. My mom slept there. Room for 4 up there? If memory serves.

      Haha! Was it rough? I keep thinking I want to take my wife on this trip for our anniversary…but worry that it could be very different and we’d disembark after the trip and she’d say “I think I’ve had just about enough of your ‘great ideas’ for the past 30 years!”
