@@TeamTerriGarber OMG! North and South is my favorite movie/tv show of all time and has been since I was 9 years old. I am in my mid-40’s now 😂. I just loved you as Ashton! I am so honored to meet you!!!!
Terri Garber! You played an amazing villianess! North and South has been one of my favorites since I was probably 5 or 6. I feel much like Phillip, you went far too underrated. I've only ever seen you once elsewhere on Jake and the Fatman. I followed you on Facebook years ago. I think you deactivated it maybe I'm not sure? The defined, distinguished demeanor you brought Ashton to life with was amazing! Your remarkable talent has always stuck in my mind! You really stood out in such a group of talent. The scene where you cried out, "I'm going to burn in hell with you Elkana!" Followed by the monolog where Ashton confesses her sins. Seeming to forget momentarily that her husband, and brother, Ore the man who loved the object of Ashton's seething hatred, comparative to Bent's fiery despise of Ore... That scene has always given me goosebumps... especially how you laughed... "She was a BLACK W****!" Damn how did you and Phillip not get put on the silver screen immediately after those performances? I'm so glad you commented and I got the chance to tell you just how much I enjoyed your work! I hope you are well! ❤❤❤
Mine as well. I was mine years old. My mother and I would get into arguments about being in bed by 9:30 my normal bedtime. I asserted my independence to stay up to watch the whole series.
This is amazing!!! I just found this series and was completely blown away. His performance was incredible, the entire production blows away 99% of what is produced today. Sincerely thank you for doing this
@@damonmcfarland9364 why is 3 bad? I’m watching the series slow because I enjoy it so much should I just skip season three? Is the production team totally different or was it bad just because of writing and Swayze being out
Casnoff's approach to Bent is spot-on. I've heard it said that "every villain believes he is the hero of his own story." That was the reason Bent comes across as such a memorable character. He could have been a one-dimensional cardboard villain but Casnoff's approach made him believable because you could see HE thought he was in the right the entire time.
I watched North and South when it first aired in 1985. I vividly remember his portrayal of Elkana Bent. He was the quintessential villain. He also played a cantor in an episode of the Nanny which was funny to watch as Fran fawned all over his character. Great interview.
Thanks for uploading this. I remember watching North & South as a kid with my parents, and i've always been a fan of the show. Its really nice to listen to Philip give such an in-depth interview and talk about so many behind-the-scenes stories
Thanks for this interview. I was disappointed you didn't have him discuss his experience working with Terri Garber as she was obviously the most connected to him in the story.
When an actor plays a villianous role so well that you wish you could shoot through your tv screen to hurt the character, that actor has done his/her job. Philip Casnoff's portrayal of Bent is captivating! Such a great performance!
Thank you so much for sharing this interview! Philip Casnoff is one of my favorite actors, and North and South is an amazing mini-series so full of great actors. In my opinion, the character of Bent nearly walked away with the picture. That's saying something with all of the tremendous actors. I love hearing the behind the scenes stuff and the actor's perspectives, and their observations and the like. This was an amazing look back on North and South. Casnoff seems like a lovely, articulate gentleman serious about his craft.
Have been following Philip Casnoff ever since he was in “North and South”. I have all 3 series on DVD. Have seen in him some other roles, too, including a wonderful time travel movie called “For All Time (2000). He has a beautiful singing voice, too. Seems like a heck of a nice guy, too.
North & South was a superb series. Everyone was brilliant in their parts, the wider story was brilliant in how it encompassed that broad sweep of American history. The two lead characters were relatable and flawed but there were three compelling villains in Bent, Justin LaMotte and Salem Jones. I come back to it every now and again.
There is no doubt in my eyes that he gave one of the best performances in the entire trilogy. I still have memories of his scenes with Wendy Kilbourne in Episode One and with Steve Harris in the final episode of 1994's "Heaven and Hell: Book 3". Really top notch.
In my opinion the best characters was actor James Read who played George Hazzard and Patrick Swayze who played Orry Main. Probably you mean best villain character.
He played such a mean guy in North & South that it's hard to believe he's the same nice person you see here person! Just shows what a great job he did.
Oh, how we loved to hate the character of Bent!!!! He had us steaming....yet, he always kept you captivated!!! I am a huge North and South fan....it was the reason our mother 'allowed' us to have a TV again....she was known to destroy them!! LOL :P
First time I saw Casnoff was in Oz as Russian Mob Inmate Nicolai Stanislofski. But I also saw North and South and I didnt know he played in whilst I never knew him before. He plays very well the Bad guy and keep a real grudge towards Swayze as he feels humiliated after Swayze defeated him in sword fight demo. A great Actor .
20:10 I can't believe Casnoff said he'd watched Elizabeth Taylor and Gene Kelly work and learned from them, and you didn't immediately ask for a few examples of things he learned from them!
The series had some interesting villians - Bent, Ashton Main, Justin LaMotte, Forbes LaMotte, Captain Turner etc. Though they were all from the South. Shame David Carradine is dead. Would love an interview with him, just to hear him say "The Sowth".
I was really young when North and South was on TV. My grandpa watched the miniseries and let me watch it with him. Because of his role as Bent being totally believable and good, I hated to watch anything with Philip Casnoff.

Exactly. After 1964, when the Republicans nominated Barry Goldwater. everything changed. African Americans started voting Democrat, and racist Southerners started voting Republican. Today all the white racists vote Republican
Liked his role in George Washington mini series, so different as Lafayette? Seems like the real Philip that in Bent reflects his personality more, being an ultra liberal anti Trump?
I was in North & South as Ashton. I love what Philip had to say. Very thoughtful. A true actor.
Were you one of the teenagers playing the role or are you Terri Garber?

Yes...biden is far more villanous than Trump. Love Philip, however.
Exept for George and Madeline other good guys in the series had a little arrogance against the so called blacks.
