The series was released in three instalments. Philip Casnoff: North and South Interview
North and South is just about the greatest mini-series ever produced. Maybe only second to Roots. Truly magnificent. I watch it regularly. REST IN PEACE Patrick Seayze and Kirstie Alley.
WTF hot Martian spacegirl shrinks spaceship in Hollywood peter forgot spacehelmet smile rocker Mark ur bro peter aka g5nationtonation
Garber was just incredible as the character she portrayed. The scene at Huntoon's house when Orry appoached her about scheming to kill Billy. The scene with Bent, Huntoon and Orry where the guns were stored, and she's describing how evil she had been.
While we can't escape Father Time, he still has the voice of the George Hazard we all loved when the miniseries was made so long ago. Yes, so many of those great actors from that series "are gone."
The chemistry between Read and Swayze was amazing !
Where can I get the full episodes of the North & South series. The DVD series does not include full scenes. So much of the original TV series is missing from the DVD series
Wolper made the mistake in mentioning the film Glory, that film was released in '89 while North and South was broadcast in the fall of '85 and spring of '86, such a great series!
Really Nice to see how ‘Ashton’ turned out to be! 😊 ❤
Phillip Casnoff's right. His North and South tv miniseries fictional character Elkanah Bent's not evil. He's just a pathetic, murderous mentally ill sociopath. By sociopath, I naturally mean he has no conscience. That's heartbreaking about him.
Love watching north & south
I had two ancestors on paternal grandmother's side who were on Union side. Elihu Clevenger (1829-1893) from Jefferson County, Tennessee. 1st Infantry Regiment of East Tennessee Volunteers. Battle of Mill Springs. Sanders Knoxville Raid. Mossy Creek. Atlanta Campaign. Resaca. Kennesaw Mountain. David Clevenger (1838-1899) Brother of Elihu. 9th Calvary Regiment. Battle of Cumberland Gap. Battle of Morristown. Stonemans 1865 Raid among others
I have studied war since I was four months old. Now 48. If I had been around before the Civil War, I would have pointed out to the people in the South that going to war would mean dealing with an adversary that has a larger population, finance, industry, logistics. The South on the hand has a hard time making a decent pair of shoes. It is totally dependent on raw materials which then has to be sent North or to England to be converted into finished goods. The longer the war goes on, these advantages would be fully mobilized while Southern resources fall apart.
I would also have pointed out to people in the North that Southerners may not have much materially speaking. But they are resilient, resourceful, used to hardship and when it comes to home and family, they will fight back. Both sides thought the war was going to last a few months. Both sides also thought of war as being an adventure or romantic. Both sides ended up being wrong.
I am from Tennessee now living in Florida. My girlfriend is from New York City. We have discussed buying a house and getting married in about a year. We have discussed this series this week. What would have happened had we been around then? She commented that war rarely if ever solves anything.
He brought that villain role to the series that provided good balance.
The casting was terrific all the way around.
Awesome miniseries 😊
My favorite miniseries. Excellent cast, storyline, screenplay, everything 😊
North and South is my favorite miniseries. And despite being a horrible person, Ashton was my favorite character and I always loved that name. I almost named my daughter "Ashton".
One of the most outstanding and memorable performances on television that I have ever seen. The first thing that I think of when I visualise Ashton is-Scarlett O'Hara with a real devilish evil streak in her! If there was ever a remake-no one I can think of could play her better than Terri Garber
wow! I watched North and South years ago as a kid and always wondered what happened to James Reed, and it's so cool to see him in 2024! this is great that you're able to interview these actors from such a great mini series!
did he marry Constance for real??? OMG!
Yes, Wendy Kilbourne, I knew that. Also Genie Francis and Jonathan Frakes married -Brett and Stanley(George's elder brother)
"I need some fresh air, James!!!" 😊
Finally Elkanah Bent became a nice guy!
Man you did such a good job such a great villain. Bent was totally evil so was Ashton. Who was worse him Salem or David Carradine's character.
She was AWESOME in North & South! Ashton was the PERFECT character for her. Her Southern Accent was RIGHT ON POINT too!
Wowwww just started to watch North and South again only tonight having watched it first time round as a youngster. It's sooooo brilliant, top top cast, nothing like it now, loved those days of tv, Terri looks lovely
I remember watching James Reed on Remington Steele. Seems like such a great guy
Ashton was such a wonderfully wicked character and my favorite.
It's a blessing to see TV actors that still live today. I really enjoy this moment here, very nice
Had to turn it off as soon as he got nasty and political. Prior to that, he was interesting. Too bad he ruined it.
I'm german: he is right with germany
Great Autor in the series. Why he wasnt a big movie Star?
I’m watching North And South now. Some episodes are on RUclips and some I’ve watched on Safari. It’s a wonderful miniseries and James Read is my favorite actor in the series. I’m glad that his character in the series is a good person and Patrick is wonderful in it too. I wish Patrick was still here of course.
The series had some interesting villians - Bent, Ashton Main, Justin LaMotte, Forbes LaMotte, Captain Turner etc. Though they were all from the South. Shame David Carradine is dead. Would love an interview with him, just to hear him say "The Sowth".
Lesson learned from the Bent character - be evil and beautiful wealthy ladies will fall in love with you....
One of my favorites I love North and South
To be more specific, North and South parts one and two, were shown in the Fall 1985 to Spring 1986 season on ABC as ratings leaders during their sweeps weeks, twice a year. Many people think it was a series of two seasons a year apart and they were not!
Book 3 was a total disaster. None of it made any sense, including Ashton reuniting with Bent, who was supposed to have died in that barn explosion. Book 3 needs to be re-written, right this time. I think after James divorced her and gave her some cash to live on, she realized she'd lost everything. She prostituted herself for a time, then met another man and eventually married him, and was a very different woman. THey lived in the midwest somewhere and she had a daughter and raised her right. Her husband died somehow, and Ashton's past came back to haunt her. She got some STD and was on her deathbed. Her husband left a good deal of money for her, and she passed it on to her daughter, and told her to go to Mt Royal. She passed away in 1890 at age 56.
Book 3, otherwise known as HEAVEN and HELL , was absolutely horrible. Lewis smith was a perfect Charles , but recast with Kyle chandler as “ Charlie “ was so wrong . Killing off Constance .. horrible
Like Larry Hagman as JR, Joan Collins as Alexis, nobody could have played Ashton better than Terri Garber. Simply sublime. Despite being a villain, Ashton was such a complex character. There is a moment after she returns from being coerced into sleeping with a guy called Drummond and she catches her reflection in a mirror. She nearly loses composition with such emotion on her face. It’s a simple moment that really is powerful. Thank you for this interview and for all the North & South interviews. 🎉❤
Terri was wonderful in this series.
North and south was and still.is the best ever american civil war story and or series that was ever made.. and it still does not get the credit it so deserved !!.....so real and believable in every way.. iv watched it a thousand times over.. simply the best in every way..❤
you have to love terri garber x
Great Interview.
What's funny about these North and South interviews is they all say the same thing: North and South Book Three sucked! I appreciate their candor. The actual book wasn't that great either.
I have come across the same sentiment.
Wonderful interview! Terri Garber has so much interesting to say and she did such a great job in the part. Thanks for posting!
Terri truly nailed Ashton's character perfectly!! She was absolutely perfect in that roll. I read the books and have re-watched the series a number of times over the years.
She was fantastic as Ashton! Great interview!
I was 7 years old when North & South aired in Denmark in 1987 - and I have loved it ever since ❤️
Wauw what an amazing interview. Nobody could play Ashton more convincing then Terri Garber. I was 7 years old when North & South aired in Denmark in 1987, and I was mesmerized from the very beginning. I have watched the series over the years more times then I can count. Now I watch it with my two daughters aged 13 and 16 - and they’ve watched North & South with me for almost ten years now. They too love it. North & South has had a deep inpact om my life, and I hold it very dear to my heart ❤️
Thank you so much for all these North and South interviews! George Hazard, as a friend, is the best kind of friend anyone could ever hope for. His support for Orry was beyond what anyone could expect in life. Their friendship is my favorite part of this remarkable and one-of-a-kind miniseries. I do want to mention, since you are interviewing him, that James Read's portrayal of George Hazard was strength and grace. George was strong enough to be courageous when it mattered and did not hide or suppress emotional vulnerability. He never appeared weak but always had balance. These are incredible qualities for a man to have, and I have shed tears more than once while watching the scene where he says goodbye to his sister Virgilia. Also loved the scene where he punched Bent in defense of what happened to Orry.
