Судьба Долматовского (автора стихов) поразительна. Стихотворец-военкор в августе 1941 года попал в плен и, несмотря на то, что являлся одновременно коммунистом и евреем, не погиб, сумел бежать, а затем, после проверок в «особых отделах», вернулся в строй батальонным комиссаром, не потеряв при этом ни боевого духа, ни поэтического вдохновения. В начале 1943 года его наградили орденом Красной Звезды.
Массовое настроение было на подъеме - всех окрыляла сталинградская победа.
Однажды Евгений Долматовский добирался из Сталинграда в Елец вместе со старым другом Марком Фрадкиным. Поезд шел медленно, пропуская воинские эшелоны, перестук колес подсказал ритм офицерского вальса. На одном из полустанков поэт и композитор вышли из вагона с готовой песней. В оставшееся время пути Фрадкин исполнял ее для бойцов под аккордеон и видел, как быстро те подхватывают.
Их произведение сразу же попало к Утесову (певец, вокалист). Леонид Осипович моментально понял: это совершенно особенная вещь. В годы войны еще никто так внятно и человечно не писал о тоске по мирной жизни. Такие песни всем давали понять: война не уничтожила в людях душевную чуткость, человечность.
В песне нет громких слов, политических деклараций, рассказывается о самом ценном и желанном для всякого человека - о любви, о мирном, счастливом бытии. Поэтому каждый считал ее своей, личной.
Есть у вальса и другая история. Летчик Василий Васильев поведал Фрадкину о том, что влюбился в девушку, с которой несколько минут танцевал под граммофон. Они даже не успели толком познакомиться - пилот срочно отбывал на аэродром. Пилот попросил композитора: «Напишите песню об этом. Если все получится точно, Зина поймет, что это о нас с ней. Может, она услышит, откликнется». И действительно, девушка, услышав по радио «Случайный вальс», откликнулась, на радио пришло ее взволнованное письмо. Марк Григорьевич вспоминал: «Мы связались с его эскадрильей. Но Васильев уже не мог ответить Зине: в одном из воздушных боев он погиб смертью героя, не пожелав выброситься с парашютом над территорией, занятой гитлеровцами...». Золотую Звезду летчику присвоили посмертно.
Как водится, нашлись у популярной песни и критики. По их мнению, она звучала слишком интимно, чересчур камерно. И откуда, дескать, взялась эта печаль, если Красная Армия наступает и нас ждут новые победы?
По одной из легенд, Сталину не понравились строки: «И лежит у меня на погоне незнакомая ваша рука». «Неужто у нас такие низкорослые офицеры, что рука девушки опирается о плечо первого встречного?» Долматовский поменял погон на ладонь. Именно так, в новом варианте, спел на студии Утесов, а записывать песню в годы войны ему довелось дважды. Второй раз по требованию цензуры - в сокращенном виде, без «легкомысленного» куплета, в котором герои танцуют.
Возникали и другие претензии: новинка показалась слишком мирной, офицер, мол, должен воевать, а не танцевать. Во избежание лишних проблем вальс из «Офицерского» переименовали в «Случайный». Мелодию в СССР к тому времени знали все - и на фронте, и в тылу. Она звучала на концертах, танцплощадках, в ресторанах. Миллионы людей помнили наизусть слова.
После войны пришли иные мелодии - триумфальные, ликующие, песню Фрадкина сочли неактуальной. На несколько лет она выпала из эфира, ее почти не исполняли. Разве что духовые оркестры наигрывали для танцующих пар. Но такие произведения не умирают, рано или поздно становятся классикой. С 1960-х «Случайный вальс» все чаще включали в свой репертуар известные на всю страну вокалисты классической школы, ведь с ним наши фронтовики шли в наступление, брали Берлин, грустили и влюблялись.
Эта песня бесценна. Как пожелтевшие фотографии отцов и дедов в новеньких (на момент съемки) погонах 1943 года.

У этой истории есть и продолжение. Только оно печальное. Девушку звали Зоей и она откликнулась... написала на радио. Фрадкин сделал запрос в воинскую часть... и ему ответили , что летчик Василий Васильев погиб смертью храбрых.
Об этой истории с В.Васильевым писал сам Фрадкин. А вымысел это или нет.. знал только сам Фрадкин.

it's a song about warrior whose army passed by some small town to take a rest and move on next. He was walking by some house, and he's heard "the waltz melody" coming from that house. He came in and met a woman that he fell in love with. Now they are dancing this "accidental waltz". They don't say a word almost, because right now here are only them and no war. They are happily dancing but they understand that tomorrow he's gonna go away and they probably never gonna see each other anymore. It is not great love story maybe but it's such unusual feeling for the soldier (or any soldier as well) to taste a peaceful life even for 1 hour. It sings that he feels himself like he's home again, so warm, so good. That's what all warriors miss and dream about.
