“Je suis Malade”, now a french classic, was written by famous French singer & songwriter Serge Lama together with composer/singer Alice Dona in 1973. This is based on his own experience and he was the original performer, hence some lyrics are a bit male-oriented (eg my mother leaves me, whiskies, I pour my blood in your body, …). When Serge Lama had a dinner with Alice Dona and told her about his obsessive love that was leading to a road block, she came back home and composed the music in a couple of hours. The morning after, she presented him the music and he wrote the lyrics in … 20 minutes. Serge Lama was the original performer in 1973, it started to be promoted on the radio, and the song was brought to fame only when, a few months after, Dalida covered it. She was an absolute mega star in France, another emotional powerhouse, and this song resonated very much with her own feelings. Her success with this song transformed it into a french classic, and started to make it famous abroad. But it is Lara Fabian that really made this song a very popular song in many countries with her cover in the mid 90s. At that time Dalida had already passed away, but Serge Lama was (and is) still alive. Dalida and Serge were two inspirations for Lara, so she sent an audio copy to Serge of her version. She was unknown at that time in France but he was so impressed with her vocal skills and her emotions rendering that he invited her in France to sing it as a duet during his own Paris concert in January 1995. It was a triumph. So he sat in a front row seat and asked her to sing it again alone. Lara also had made some subtle changes to the song that gave it even more power. Serge and Lara became good friends and performed several other duets later on. The 1999 version ("From Lara with Love" Concert in Montreal) ruclips.net/video/eHSyk4SGtuY/видео.html is legendary internationally and has attracted many artists to do a cover, even from non french-speaking countries. The most recent ones I am aware of are from italian singer Giulia Falcone, from the korean singer Choi Sung Hoon or from the korean band Forestella. Lara is used to perform the song very differently in each of her tour and for instance the En Toute Intimité, 2003, Paris Olympia version is even more dramatic ruclips.net/video/SyILdRAOS88/видео.html
Thank you for reacting to one of the greatist artists out there. Lara is a world class performer and i'm not surprised that she is one of Dimash's idols. The way she gets into character, tells the story and conveys emotion is just phenomenal. At the end of her performance you can see how she is slowly coming back to reality.
Thank you for another chance to see you reaction to this performance of hers. Lara is known in France as "The singer of Love." In Rússia she is "A soul with voice." 🤩
Part of the Lara Fabian's review by William Ruhlmann. (He is a famous music critic from The USA). He wrote this in May, 30, 2000. "... It's no surprise that Sony has thrown its considerable weight behind the effort to make Fabian an international superstar. And there's no mistaking that effort on her self-titled English debut (not to be confused with her self-titled debut of 1991, which was sung in French). All the accoutrements of major-label largesse are present, especially in the total of ten credited producers, who include Patrick Leonard (Madonna), Walter Afanasieff (Mariah Carey), and Brian Rawling, who produced Cher's comeback hit "Believe." Working closely with Fabian, who is a songwriter as well, these heavy hitters have created widescreen power ballads with the occasional dance song thrown in. The lyrics are the usual generalized depictions of the joys and turmoil of romance, with the music almost invariably swelling portentously halfway through the track so the singer can take off on an overwrought tear. Fabian has the pipes to handle such material and is actually better at singing in English than Dion, who always had trouble with her phrasing. She doesn't do herself any favors as a songwriter, but that isn't very important on this kind of record. As in a big-budget summer movie, it's the stars and special effects that matter, not the plot. It's easy to see this album making Lara Fabian a star in the English-speaking world, but it took even Dion a couple of albums to crack that market, and she was a hard worker. Fabian has her work cut out for her, but she's taken a big step toward filling Dion's shoes with this album."
@MannyReactBrazil Thanks for sharing this. I wonder how William Ruhlmann's review would have read if he had known about the dark intrigues within Sony Music at the time, as Celine Dion and her 'team' did everything possible to block and scuttle Lara's entry into the North American market because they felt threatened by Lara's vocal and performing brilliance. Lara subsequently became huge in European and Asian circles, but - to this very day - she remains largely unknown on this side of the Atlantic, and that is the reason why. Thank goodness over the past few years RUclips reactors have '(re)discovered her and cast much-deserved light on this remarkable talent.
The emotionnal equivalent of Je suis malade from her english catalog is Broken Vow ruclips.net/video/kJBGCI8aSE4/видео.html A song Lara wrote, based on her personal breakup story, and was covered by all the greatests: Barbra Streisand, Josh Groban, Linda Eder, … up to the new generation: Cakra Khan, Morissette Amon, Gigi de Lana, Katrina Velarde, Almira (4th Impact), Jackie Evancho, …
Great reaction.Just subscribed hoping you will react to more of Lara. Appreciate that you noticed and commented at the end of the performance how it took Lara some time to come back to reality after totally committing to the Performance. She's one of a kind for sure.
🇨🇦 Lara is now a Canadian living in Montreal ! She is fluent in French, Italian, English and Spanish ! Lara has performed in 12 different languages ! An explanation of how she came to sing this song is in the comments below by Eric Sicard !
Всё правильно понимаешь ... Выступление с полным погружением в образ и получается удивительный мини спектакль одного актёра !.. Это редкий дар и так могут только настоящие артисты и, конечно, выйти из этого состояния сразу не получиться ...
she gave her love, her singing career and her life to a man who did not care........."Malade !".........the a capella segment is unbelievably moving.........
Thanks a lot for you review. At the very end, she's not suffering getting out of the meanings, she is out of breath and oxygen after her vocal performance. Doesn't mean she's not involved, this is just a "normal" physics thing singers have to deal with when they go this far.
Very moving reaction... You should watch another video with good subtitles because they don’t translate correctly in this one... Or check lyrics with translations, the lyrics are so beautiful ❤
