My beginner’s understanding: The keyboard gate/trigger is the sample & hold clock source. Each press of a key is a “tick” on the clock. The sample & hold module stores the value sent to its input, holding it for as long as each “tick”, sending it to the oscillator. This ends up providing a limited “copy” of the keyboard trigger signal to an oscillator independently of what is happening with the other oscillator. Anyone got a better explanation? I’m new to this modular stuff.
For better results with VCO2 (1m38s), try to use Envelope 1 REV OUT instead of Keyboard TRIG OUT 😉. Just remember to set Envelope 1 ATTACK to ~1 and RELEASE to zero. ⚡
@@donartyone3258 In this way you avoid the problem described in the video at 1m38s - 1m50s. You don't have to retrig the keyboard a second time to have the correct pitch of VCO2.
Neat! Never thought of that use for S&H- I've only used it as a random generator (with noise for the input) or as a means of making a stepped envelope.
When I tune OSC 1 and 2 to say, middle C, OSC 2 drifts more and more out of tone the further on the keyboard I get from the tuning note, it's a semi-tone or more out on either end of the keys, and it's driving me insane. Anyone have any insight?
One thing to check is, have you let it warm up for fifteen minutes? The manual recommends it and while many MS-20's will play in decent tune from the time you turn them on, some really do take that long to achieve full stability. Also have you played with the master tune? Perhaps you can strike some kind of compromise between VCO 1's tuning and VCO 2's tuning. All tuning systems are compromises, after all...
Sto provando a usare sq1 come convertitore midi to cv per usare l ms20 in modalità duofonica e funziona. Ciaoo
I'm really curious why the demos I hear of the reissue rev 1 filter have lots of noise triggered on every key press. Your rev 1 original doesn't seem to have that problem.
Maybe a stupid question .. but how do I connect the MS20 to an amp via my pc? I had a spare aux jack to double RCA which goes into my mixer, but the poraphony aint working now... meh
Mi riferivo piuttosto all'overdrive...
Possibly the greatest MS-20 trick on the internet.
This is so great! And so simple, I never knew. Thanks for the tip! Trying this now...
Like people have said, beautiful Holden-esque tone. Thank you. I was leaning toward getting an MS-20 mini before, but now I know it's necessary.
This is insanely helpful. It's like a constant drone on say a bagpipe
Brilliant! What a great series of MS20 'how to' clips! Thanks for uploading!
That is seriously helpful advice, id love to know exactly how and why it works but to be honest im just grateful for the tip. Thanks

I did this and it behaved audibly the same. Was this just an alternative to the Kb Trig out to get the same result?

Good stuff! Excited for the overdrive video.

Totally appreciate these tips and tricks! I’ve let my ms-20 sit around too long! Now I’m gonna go give these a try

I've been listening to your music for a few years now. Even this tutorial is compelling!
Ha that's incredibly clever! Just bought an MS-20 Mini so I'll have to try this 👌
So beautiful and fun! The FX patch is very inspiring!
I like this Chapter , very cool , i re find my OLD Korg MS20 (1978 ) ;) thank you .
Great tip, i didn`t have tought about sample and hold being used in that way, very smart way of use it! Thanks!
Just can't beat the old analog limitation that still can create a beautiful unique sound
You're a master of this machine. Nice videos mate, thanks for sharing :)
Most useful thing I’ve learnt so far about the MS-20. Thank you!
Thanks for the amazing tip!
used it on my first video with this beast of a synth

This is so great! Thank you! More videos please!
Very clear and easy to follow, thank you
Coool :)
Was also able to follow this with the KLC MS20 controller and plugin.
Omg thank you so much. I was so close but I couldn’t figure out the technique. Omg ur a wizard. I will show you my beefcake bass if you want
This is amazing!! Wow now I'm totally getting one!!
Great!! Such a clever use of the S&H!!!

Hi from Germany - I like this Synthi Sounds - nice day
When using a delay and reverb pedal work as well
Yes!! It sounds so good! I'm gonna get to this ✌️ Thanks.
minchia zio, ne sai a pacchi! 😀 complimenti, video molto interessanti!
this is golden!
Make more of these! Are there any ms-20 resources you could recommend? Maybe like a forum/website of cool and innovative ms-20 patches?
crowning glory!
duophony works even on the iMS-20 iOS app. Nice ! :-)

I really like your delay. Which one did you use?
Mirium Sonos I think he's just using the standard delay in ableton
Suppose if we chain 4 MS 20s, then when playing on one of them the polyphony will be 4?
Excellent, man!!!!
This works with Ms20 mini too?
Yes!
Thanks for this tip! Much appreciated.
excellent info !
[tips the hat]
you sir are a clever man
I'm really curious why the demos I hear of the reissue rev 1 filter have lots of noise triggered on every key press. Your rev 1 original doesn't seem to have that problem.
Is this possible with the desktop version(ms 20 kit)? cant seem to find a designated vco2 cv input
do this keyboard have that funky worm synth like in the song funky worm?
Grandissimo!
gorgeous sound, thanks :)
Man, awesome tip! Thanks!
The paraphony does'nt work when the vco 2 play a lower key than the vc0 1, is that normal ?
Maybe a stupid question .. but how do I connect the MS20 to an amp via my pc? I had a spare aux jack to double RCA which goes into my mixer, but the poraphony aint working now... meh
great work! thanks!
Its a beautiful thing 😃
Hell yeah bro !!! Thanks so much
works amazingly with other modulars with a S/H... just try!
excellent video :)
Now I need to get my momentary switch fixed. I bought my ms20mini used, and the momentary switch broke after a few uses of it.
That's a nice stereo delay! Mind if I ask what you used?
Allie Pally1 Korg SDD-3000 ;)
Sounds like the synth in Holden - Renata!
+David Coxon Indeed! But he hasn't made it on ms20. This is the beauty of modular synths.
Amazing! Thanks a lot!
Amazing
Thank you so much , blessed be
hello. is it possible to do that with ms20 ?
Nice one!
can anyone explain the patch flow to me? mainly the first 2 points
- trig [out] > s&h [clock]
- kbd [cv out] > s&h [in]
- s&h [out] > vco2 [cv in]
Enjoyed. Thank you.
Rock solid 😎

Is that a new ms-20 kit? looks clean as f
Wooow! Now I know it! Thanks
Yes!
Very nice !
Great!
This is fucking awesome and you are fucking awesome. Thank you.
I love you so much

does this also apply to the ms 20 mini?
DBR yes
deathofgrungeboy great, thanks.
One more reason to buy the ms 20 mini :D
awesome
Gracias!!!
Is this an original MS-20? It sounds so great. Love parahony!
Kinda looks like a new kit
Thanks for the tip :)
Well, although I copied the settings of the video its not working on my vintage ms20... :(
